Car won't rev over 3000

How os the idle? Struggles, low around 400-500 rpm? Does it start, idle high, 1000-1200 during "warm up" then step down? To 750ish rpm?

Idle seems to be ~1000, probably a bit high. Not sure about the step-up and down.

I think they (son and s-i-l) may have run it without that sensor some, I'm guessing that may account for some of the codes? When I read the first three (implausible ...) it was definitely connected.

Have either the dealer or a parts house look up the part number for the ECM for your vehicle, and the part number for the ECM for the donor vehicle. If they are the same number you can rule it out and buy the ECM from the donor vehicle.

If they are different part numbers I'd research the difference further.

I seem to have some trouble finding "ECM" at the regular parts dealers for this car. Rock Auto shows a PCM that might be the same thing - it seems the manual I have uses the term ECM/PCM.

Also as a side note on that, I finally found the codes in the manual along with diagnostic steps. That's a big plus!

All three have steps around PCM and possibly reprogramming it. Definitely looking like that now.

Before you guess any more parts and time, I highly suggest you get someone with datastream/ real time data capability to look at what is actually working or not working. There becomes a time when its best, cheaper and smarter to just pay the man

I would already be paying someone, but as I mentioned, I've been burnt by the locals and really don't know how to go about finding an honest mechanic anymore.
I'm trying to get ahold of someone who has a scanner like you mention but so far it's been a matter of timing.

So I found someone to check it out, but I need to get it there. From Louisburg-ish to Henderson. While it IS drivable (as in, everything engages and it moves), I'm not sure it's safe to drive that far, or what damage driving it that far might cause. Any thoughts on that?

Alternately, where can I get a car dolly? When I try to reserve one on U-Haul they say my truck is "too old" and won't let me place the reservation.

Did you look into getting the computer from the donor car to try? Any brand new computer will need to be dealer programmed. Went thru that with a 2010 Explorer last year...

Yes, it is completely incompatible, including physically.

This guy offered a diagnostic for $120, and said that if it needed reprogramming that would be part of it. Don't know how trustworthy he is, but it's a dealership, so probably my best bet. Seems better than scrambling around trying this & that anymore.
