The devolution of school discipline

If a 6 year old hasn't learned that you can't hit and kick adults when they don't get their way, the parents have failed. That sort of tantrum isn't "what kids do". Its what kids do that haven't been raised.

When I was in school, most every teacher kept a paddle in their desk, and they weren't afraid to use it. If the parents didn't discipline the kid, the teachers would.

Yall ever act out against how your parents raised you?
Like, ever do something your parents told you not to?

Im just saying, let's not jump on the 'bad parents' thing so fast without more information than was presented in the first article. Ive not dug deeper into this, so if you have additional information, please share. But kids do dumb stuff all the time, even the ones with 'good' parents.

What a mess.

With the old discipline tools off the table I think many teachers are at a loss. This is especially true of many younger ones raised in the era of no corporal punishment. Since they don't know how or won't handle the situation if the student ignores verbal direction they fall back on administration. Then administration is in a similar boat and they fall back on school resource officers. That is not really the resource officers job but they often do it.

I'm not a teacher but was raised by one and grew up in a family of them. My father in law after retirement from another law enforcement agency was a school resource officer. That's where my perspective comes from.

Blame some NC law makers for less punishment in schools.
At this point, legally, a kid could come in spit in my face, kick me in the nads, and then haymaker me...but if they're under 18 then they wont get much of a punishment at all. Well, not with law enforcement.
There isnt much the law can/will do anymore.

That said, Im thankful I got a strong principal, one who will not allow nonsense in his school. One who will get rid of the bad ones and make the place better.
But more needs to happen with our laws

I’m going to have a very awkward first day at school with teacher. “Hi, I’m little Cindy’s father. If she acts out, give her the ruler. I won’t tolerate her disturbing others education and not appreciating her own and I can’t leave my job to do it myself. “ then will hand teacher a signed consent form lol.

seriousky though it is crazy these days. In a pathetic way. Never been a particularly religious person but seriously considering private school for daughter so discipline will actually been maintained at least at circa 1980s levels.

Wait... do you know my dad?
Because I heard various versions of that SO many times when I was a kid.

And if you did that today, you' probably be turned into CPS because the letter giving permission to paddle would be used as proof that you batter your child.

Ha, I just can’t help but acknowledge that was the way “the greatest generation” was raised. They defeated the nazi f%#ing war machine. My generation better pray our kids don’t have to partake in a real war because this country is over if we do (draft situation/ peer nation etc)

I don’t plan to get physical with my kids, mostly because I can manipulate their emotions and mind in twisted ways. You ever take a Paw Patrol beanie baby from a 2 year old? They don’t make prisons to control that $h!t lol. We gave the school system a chance to manipulate minds, and it turned into liberal indoctrination. Fail. So, given the limited capacity for them to affect meaningful change, I say keep it simple with basic Pavlovian positive and negative reinforcement. “The ruler” is benign, but uncomfortable, and more importantly socially potent. How many times kid gonna wanna get sparked in front of class. They will learn quick.

My daughter's on the autism spectrum & was having problems in high school. Had a Section 504 plan for ADD & I had a sit-down with an assistant principal & all her teachers, just to introduce my self & let them know to feel free to contact me, etc. One of 'em said something about her acting out in class & I told her, "well, whoop her ass." Shoulda heard their chins hit the table. Uh, uh, uh, we, uh, can't do that. I said, "sure you can. I just finished BLET & have the current NCGS general statutes book out in my car. I'll fetch it for ya & show you, if you want."

three ways of getting fired as a teacher
-steal money
-touch a kid sexually
-touch a kid at all.
Cant beat the kids ha

Had a kid in one of my classes named Kwanterius. Not a bad kid, but just chatty and loquacious, so I would have to separate him from other students constantly. One day, his granny, who was raising him, comes in. I get a call from the office that she is coming up, and that is it. I see this big ol' lady come storming in and brace for the cussing I'm about to get. Instead, she introduces herself and tells me, in no uncertain terms, "if Kwan start acting up again, you just snatch him up by his little arm and tell him you about to beat the black off his ass."

I thanked her for the permission but never took her up on the offer.

Telling mom that she's her sons biggest problem came close. Took her almost 2 weeks to calm down, stop trying to get me fired, and realize I was right.

Oh we've all done that recently with one.
Mom doesnt get mad, actually will agree "youre right..." and then changes for about two weeks and then back to the old ways.
Her boy is SO dependent on her and the grandmother that he'll be so screwed post high school
Heck, sometimes he comes in with homework in GRANDMOTHER'S HANDWRITING

Ugh. That was my middle school years of my mother living vicariously. It really left me at a disadvantage when I went to (public) high school and was on my own. It was one of those moments that created a point of conflict with her brother, my uncle, but that’s a story for another day.

p.s. because of my mother I came up remedial in math, but my trade is engineer. That tells you something about the (piss poor) private (more expensive than college) education I had.

I went to school in what was at the time a very progressive public school system. Corporal punishment was permitted, but only at the student's option. Very few students refused corporal punishment at school - we were more afraid of the substantially more severe punishment we would get at home if our parents found out about our transgressions.

One of the ladies that works for me is always trying to leave work early or RIGHT on time (yeah, that's never an option) because she has to go home and do her son's homework so he doesn't fail his senior year...
I try telling her that's not exactly the right way to go about things... but she's not interested in having him be a burden on her and wants him to graduate so he can go get a job and move out (she's already caregiver for her mom).
In her defense, she does make sure that her son copies everything over in his own writing...

Look, kid Im discussing has autism, which is a social thing and the kid def has some social skill problems.
BUT he's also VERY smart, in fact he's listed as AIG.
But one day I gave them a simple assignment and he just wasnt working. I said, "Dude, this is 15 minutes, get it done now and no homework"
He replied with, "I have too much homework, I'll do it at home"
"yeah, but you do it now and you dont HAVE to do it at home"
"But it's easier at home"
"Why?"
"Grandmother tells me what to write and I write that"

This week in another class he turned in a major assignment in gma handwriting and tried to lie and say it looks different because he used ink. lol

KId is a habitual liar and, due to his increased intelligence, has figured out the game...at least at home. Just dont do it and they'll do it for you.

Isn't it amazing that with the last 40 years of "Enlightened Educational Theory" and all the new technology and the way kids are prepared in school that the United States is ranking lower on the list of preparedness?

So the more liberal, compassionate and loving educational system has not advanced the learning, and at times, hurting the good student because of disruptions.

Hmmm........
