When I told my dad I was joining the corps right out of high school he took me with him to Maine to drop off a helicopter engine to be repaired. At that time this was the only place in the country that worked on that particular model.

He told me that we would be stopping in NYC for a few days to visit some old Air America friends of his and asked if there was anything that I wanted to do while we were there. I didn’t hesitate. I said I would love to see a play on broadway. He asked which one. I said either Les Miserable or Phantom of the Opera.

Les Mis was my first choice. I’d read the book by Hugo and I had a CD with all the songs from the musical. Still some of my favorite music today.

One of his buddies was a VP of some big investment bank and got us third row center tickets to both. Still one of my favorite memories with my dad.

Les Mis was everything I’d hoped it would be and still the better of the two. But when the Phantom came flying out over my head it was pretty amazing.

I love the theater. Miss Saigon put on a show in Havelock at our middle school when I was a kid and I was hooked. Then I saw Street Car at the Carolina Theater off Broadway with Billy Zane playing Stanley my freshman or sophomore year of high school. No idea how many plays I've seen since. Plays, Opera, ballet, musicals even... If the production value is good, I'll give it a shot. There's a lot of culture out there...

PS, Phantom was spectacular. The canals/boat setup on stage was impressive...

When I was a kid my mom and grandma took me to see Peter Pan in New York, think it was 1979-1980.
Loved it! Admittedly I love the Peter Pan tales and movies. One thing I remember from it, is they used a laser for Tinker Bell flying around. First time I ever seen one in real life. Pretty neat stuff. Sandy Duncan played Pan.

We took a field trip to a theater in Fayetteville in grade school.
30ish years removed hell if I know what they performed.

I have seen phantom and lion king in NYC, and les miserables here a few times. As a prior thesbian I have a great respect for all stage work.
les mis is a favorite, but i was very impressed in how they did Lion king.

When I worked in NYC I would go each year during Christmas week, I'd buy my tickets in July for best seats. 42nd St. with Jerry Orbach and Nana Visitor was standing in for the lead actress, Into the Woods, My Fair Lady, The Odd Couple female version was outstanding. Last event was How to Succeed in Business with John Larroquette and Daniel Radcliffe, what a show, the entire cast worked so hard, it was the best show I ever attended.

A Christmas Carol at Ford’s Theater. It was spectacular. I enjoyed it much more than I anticipated.

Ive seen Phantom, Will Rogers Follies, and a musical called Nunsense, all in NYC but at different times.
I went to semi professional performances of The Pirates of Penzance and The Barber of Seville put on by Univ of Tennessee in the Tennessee Theater.
I dont get the chance much anymore, but I do enjoy the theater.

Been to a few. On our honeymoon we went to SW VA and caught a play in a small theater that was the place Ernest Borgnine got started. Would love to go back.

We went and say Phantom in Toronto when it was at its peak. My wife loved it, I slept through it.

Cats left me and my family wondering if the problem was with us or everyone else. It couldn’t end fast enough.

Saw the Nutcracker ballet and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Saw Wicked in San Diego and enjoyed that.

Been to the symphony many times, always enjoyed it.

I took an ex girlfriend to see Mamma Mia! in Raleigh for her birthday. She loved it but I really didn't care much for it. She got me tickets to see Merle Haggard and Bob Dylan at a small venue in Asheville because of it, so I call it a win.

The Lion King show at Disney is by far the best live show I've seen.

In high school (and 8th grade) I was in the school choir.
Our high school choral teacher did a trip every year, 9th and 10th grade was NYC, then Chicago, and then, as a senior, DC.
Every time we did a musical, Broadway in NYC.
Phantom
King and I
Ragtime
Fantasticks
Les Mis
Shear...I forgot what it was called. Shear Terror or something?

Anyway, yes, Ive seen professional theater. Was really excited about seeing La Bamba playing in King and I (dude, Im a jerk, I cant think of the actor's name right now lol)
Really well done, and Id be more than happy to go see more!
Heck, I like our high school's theater pretty good. Low budget, high school actors, but really good!

I have gone to the theater all of my life from DC, NYC & London. Everything from the Kennedy Center, Fords Theatre, Broadway etc.
  • Phantom
  • Wicked
  • Fish in the Dark
  • Pippin
  • Hamlet
  • Romeo & Juliet
  • Book of Mormon
  • Sound of Music
  • West Side Story
  • Hair
Lots of others I can’t think of off the top of my head. I love the theatre.

West Side Story in NYC & the Paris Opera House, tue latter was a lot of fun because I knew the lead guy & gal & helped in the background. I don’t recall liking any others.
Several others in NY I don’t remember, the nutcracker because mom thought it was the Christmas thing to do.

I’ve been to a half-dozen or so...and a couple stand out:

1. Went to see something at Blumenthal while we were in high school. For the life of me I can’t remember what it was, but we were all in full costume. Something along the timeline of King Arthur?
2. Canterbury Tales...hilarious and slightly inappropriate
3. Disney’s On The Record was fanatastic
4. Lion King was phenomenal (my wife and son also got to see it on Broadway)

There are magnets on my fridge for Wicked, Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon. But I think Les Mis is the only one of those i attended?

I’ve gone to a few Cirque de Soliel shows, they were awesome! 1 was in an Randall’s Island Park NYC (sketchy getting there), one at Madison Square Garden (gf, now wife, surprised me with this one!), one in Philly, and I’ve been meaning to do one in Vegas while on a work trip.

As for more conventional plays, I went to a couple at Blumenthal since a friend had a line on free tickets, don’t recall what they were.

Side story...

My wife said something one day about 15 years ago we have never let her live down. She said so-and-so was coming to the Blumenthal and did we want to go. But she pronounced it The Blue Menthol...and it’s the only way I can say it now. :D

Do North Carolina’s outdoor plays count? My parents took my sister an I to all of the more well known ones while we were growing up and learning NC History. I went back to The Lost Colony a few years ago and enjoyed it just as much as an adult.

We have season tickets to the DPAC but, truth be told, most of the time my wife and MIL use the tickets. I have enjoyed the shows we went to but they enjoy them more

Took my wife to Phantom of the Opera few times in San Fran. She was/is a big fan of that one. Took her to see Stomp out there too. Also saw it in Durham when we moved here. Saw the Monty Python one up on Broadway as well. Not my thing, but since my wife likes them we’ve done a few. Made her go see Tommy with me once in CA just to pay her back.

Went to see The Producers on Broadway. Meh. Not my idea of a night out. Saw the Marijuana Logs way off Broadway but it was still in NY (I think). Very funny but nobody was there. I like live music shows with legitimate talent. I've been to a lot of concerts in 60 yrs. Last live music show was about a month ago. May have been my last. My knees cant take sitting in those cramped seats for 90 mins+ anymore. This virus crap may bankrupt some of those shows and or theaters.

Seen all the big Andrew Lloyd Webbers in Chicago.
Cats is a piece of steaming garbage. Walked out.
Not a Broadway show, but Blueman Group is an entertaining evening.
If you find yourself in Vegas, their shortened highlight only version of Phantom is enjoyable, better than the full version I saw in Chicago.

Lou Diamond Phillips! Thats the guy

I picked up some hookers on Long Island. Did I ever tell you about my face rusting?

Saw Phantom in Toronto on young street. Was absolutely amazing! Would highly recommend to anyone.

Phantom, War Horse, Cirque O, Cirque Mystere, Wicked, Cats, Lion King. I enjoy them. Phantom is my fav. I missed the "Sequel" of Phantom, Love Never Dies..... I gotta catch that one.

Lou Diamond Phillips! Thats the guy

He came into my bar with a buddy's ex girlfriend while in town for the King and I. We kept calling him Chavez y Chavez all night and saying callate chivato and Navajo under our breaths and between sentences to him...

I went to Ford’s Theatre (yes, the one Lincoln was killed in) in DC to see Our American Cousins when I was stationed at Ft Meade. I sat in front of Attorney General John Ashcroft and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and their wives. The play was awesome!

Oh I forgot something. A New Yorker sitting next to me at the Phantom said "We had to wait 2 years to get center tickets this close to the stage, but I understand it will be worth it. How long have you and your dad been waiting". I told her we just decided we wanted to come to the play 2 days ago. She hurrumfed and didn't talk to me for the rest of the play LMAO.

On Broadway I have seen Phantom, Les Miz, The King and I, A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum. Off Broadway, Tommy (by The Who), My Fair Lady, and Stomp.

Lived in SoCal for awhile, there was a lot to see. Phantom & Evita multiple times (Robert Guillame as Phantom, missed Crawford), Man of La Mancha (a few), West Side Story (with Danica McKellar) - I guess you would call those "professional"

IMO DPAC is as good as what I've seen in LA, and Raleigh puts on top-notch shows too. I assume Charlotte has similar. Raleigh was my first exposure to LeMis, and I enjoyed that thoroughly.
