Son-in-law was notified today they are closing down for two weeks but it could be longer. I told him it will be longer of course. He will work until Friday. He is store shipping and receiving team leader. I know how much you and I love that operation. Let’s here it.

They wont be alone in this.
Bummer for every employee they have

I got emails from THD that they’re closing at 6p every day. Eddie Bauer is closed completely until further notice. We’ll continue to see these kind of closures the remainder of this week.

I was just explaining to my wife that I bet these companies are also closing early to make it easier to manage hours given the lower sales they’re seeing right now. In times of uncertainty, consumers hold onto their money.

Not where toilet paper is concerned!!!! ;)

First thing Monday morning we had an email from our ceo for no more overtime. Luckily we are still working just having to keep an eye on the hourly guys time.

Dicks could be making money but they decided to be anti gun.
CD
They're still making money (or was when in full operation)
It's been close to a decade, they're doing ok.

I hate to see anybody that wants to work, out of work. Some of our people will be hit hard by our closing for 2 weeks. For some reason, the owners won't let them use "sick time" or "vacation time". I am certain this is a simple "money issue". No money coming in, none to pay out. The people who work for me will not have this burden, but I can't take on this for 100 employees.

Just out of curosity where is the store or distribution center he works? Wondering if its just a regional thing from local govt mandate or if whole chain? Got a email from a supplier the local govt was making employees stay hone so intern were having to hold shipments for a couple weeks because of having to shelter in place but rest or support employees were working just remotely. This one was based out of CA.

The parking lot at the one here stays so deserted that you'd think it's always been closed.

Oh come on now, what's wrong with the kayaks?

It's not the "kayaks" it's the Kayak operators....... A kayak floating empty all by itself is fine with me, it's when you add an idiot with a paddle and they suddenly think the entire lake/river is theirs and the rules of the road/laws of tonnage don't apply to them....

He’s in the Morganton, NC store. Online states its company wide for two weeks after Friday.

Heard that they're closing 400 stores. Hopefully for good. Wonder how that whole gun control thing is going to work out for them now that ALL sports are pretty much done for the entire summer, including their vaunted partnerships with schools and MUH GOLF! that replaced the Lodges and gun sales. I'm sure Academy was sure happy their competition went full retard, especially now that they (Academy) can't keep much inventory of guns and ammo on shelves or online without it selling out immediately. I know I've spend a grand at Academy online since March buying ammo at reasonable prices. Oi Vey! Mr Stack, have a nice retirement!

I am not sure how many times it can be said but for the stores bottom line removing guns and associated merchandise increased sales, profitability and stock price. They stopped selling guns in March of 2019. The stock was trading at $35 a share. By Jan 2020 they were trading at a 52 week high of $49. Like everyone else in retail right now they have taken a dump since late Feb. It is ok to not like them. It is ok to stop buying from them. What I don't understand is the spin on the narrative that they lost money because they stopped selling guns.

As to Academy they have not raised their prices on ammo as much as other people. I don't look at their guns because they really don't sell anything that I am interested in but we don't know if they are "making" any money. Walmart was "making" money on ammo even thought they sold a lot of it. Selling lots of something does not equal profitability. They are a privately held company so we are not privy to their books but I can guarantee they are hurting just like everyone else in brick and mortar retail right now.

It is obtuse to always look at the world through the sights of a gun. Everything is not a gun related issue. Sometimes when all you do is carry a hammer everything around you turns into a nail. What really sucks here is the people who are out of work. The people who are losing their jobs and are being put on the brink of losing everything. That is the real story here. Millions of people are out of work with no idea when they will be working again. Millions of small businesses are never going to reopen. At the same time people are dying other people are putting their lives on the line to try to save them and all you care about is where you can buy your ammo cheap. You are pretty calculus not to care about the people effected by this. Enjoy your cheap ammo.

It's simple: supply and demand. Dick's quit supplying so the demand went elsewhere. They're closing 400 stores and althought I'm looking "thru the sights of a gun", less demand = less sales mean less revenue. That probably didn't help them.

And DSG isn't exactly a small business, so their virtue signaling CEO can assume full responsibility for his employees like every other boss out there. Sweet Irony that guns are in demand and they are missing out on REVENUE.
Let me know where in my post I stated I never cared about the 'people affected by this'. They can file unemployment like the other millions out there who are unemployed because of the virus or simply because their CEOs valued virtue signaling over revenue. Perhaps I would be as inclined to throw MY revenue at them had they not used their business as a platform for gun control.

In the end I don't shop at Dicks Sporting goods not because of any real political issue but because they don't have good prices on the stuff I want. I get better deals on shoes, apparel etc... from other retailers. Plus there is not one in my immediate area. I don't support them one way or another really but I am all for freedom. Freedom means not everyone has to agree with me or act in the same manner or value the same things I do. They are free to do as they choose.

This statement seems fairly callous and uncaring to me.

I also love that you completely ignore the reality that getting rid of guns and gun related sales helped DSGs bottom line. They absorbed a $48.8 million dollar hit for removing guns and still made more money than the previous year with guns. Don't let truth get in the way of a good story.

DICK'S Sporting Goods Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2019 Results; Delivers 5.3% Increase in Fourth Quarter Same Store Sales

- Consolidated same store sales for the full year increased 3.7%, above the high-end of the Company's guidance of a 2.5 to 3% increase

- Company delivered full year 2019 earnings per diluted share of $3.34 and non-GAAP earnings per diluted share of $3.69, up 3% and 14% respectively versus $3.24 in 2018, a year in which there were no non-GAAP adjustments

- Company to remove the hunt department from approximately 440 additional DICK'S Sporting Goods stores in 2020; Records pre-tax restructuring charges of $48.8 million during fourth quarter 2019

- Company announces a 13.6% increase in its quarterly dividend

- Company expects full year 2020 consolidated same store sales to be approximately flat to an increase of 2%

Yeah.......they might want to re-evaluate that same store sales when 400 are going to be effectively zeroed out.

Personally, I shopped Dick's every week before they started this pompous virtue signaling. There was a store 1.5 miles from my work. It's closed now due to various reasons but it relocated to a more gentrified area away from N. Tryon st.
They started out as a bait-tackle and hunting store. I would shop them FIRST for the big boxes on ammo and hunting goods. The store I frequented employed college students that were knowledgable about things in the Lodge. I was pleased when they started the F&S stores.
They they started catering to the 'urban sports' crowd. Then around 2015 they showed their true colors in the Troy debacle and the MSRs. But they REALLY showed their true colors a couple of years ago.
I had stopped shopping them for ammo but still for hunting goods up until the latest virtue signaling. They quit employing college students and moved all the salt water fishing gear to a store down toward Eastern NC.
Then along came Academy and effectively replaced the spot that DSG held in my shopping needs. For the last 5 years I haven't darkened their door and neither has my family and most friends.
So yeah I'm not sad to see them go, and I see how they treated their employees for the most part - like Walmart. BTW Walmart has gotten the same treatment for the last 2 years as well. I haven't stepped foot in one in 6 months.
