Got a question for youall..., At what point does your AR go from looking cool to looking retarded? ....I like tacti-tech, but I often wonder if my AR looks stupid, ...do I have too much shit on it, or just enough without going overboard? ....., what do you guys have on your AR?....like the guy said to Dirty Harry ...”I’ve got to know?”

List of upgrades to my standard mil-spec build..
Extended mag release, magpul bad extended bolt release, 15” BlastAR extended triangular handguard’(aluminum) magwell flare and grip , tacticle flashlight with pressure switch, small laser, carry handle with sight, these are the standout additions...tasteful or too much??

When guns become outlawed,I will become an outlaw!
The fact that the government would even consider repealing the second amendment is the very reason for which it was written.

If you have to ask....

Personally I'm a minimalist. Single sighting system, maybe buis, maybe light, maybe mildly modified controls. Stock, grip, handguard are required so they don't count, slings aren't required, but they make sense.

If you have a purpose for the stuff rock on, if you slapped it on there just because, hey it's yours, but I think it's dumb.

I’m pretty much of the Beef15 school of AR.
One optic or irons. Don’t even use BUIS anymore. I have a light, in a box, that rarely gets attached.
I focus strictly on performance. So, all the controls are as I like. Good trigger and nice controls. For example, I like short throw safeties. I do have a cheap magwell now on the gun I use most for matches. I need all the help I can get, lol.

Do what works for you. I have to admit, the bridging carry handle is a no go for me. There’s no way I’d be able to get a good sight picture with the peep that far forward, and the look would drive me batty. But if it works for you: the proof is in the pudding.

Fix the carry handle! Other than that I run an optic and a light and qd sling sockets on all ar’s

Technically, if you’re a grown-up you’re not supposed to have to justify how you spend your own money. LOL that being said, as others have said, push that carry handle back and you’re good to go.

My two cents. If I don’t use it while shooting, it doesn’t go on the rifle. I don’t like a bunch of superfluous doodads on my rifle. Normal controls. Lpvo. Sling. That’s it. I will mount a light if I am going to be in the dark which is almost never.

I picked up a surefire weapon light for my AR a while back, probably three or four years ago. LED, real nice.
I put in on...and quickly took it back off.
F that noise. Im shooting at the range during the day. Why do I want another 6oz or so hanging off the end of my rifle?
Not one of my guns have a light on them, though I have two, now, weaponlights (one is for a pistol, might put that on the VP9 for the bedroom gun)

There was a time when I would slap a cheap laser on every single one of my guns. Only to find out that I could not even see the laser on the target. My guns had lights, lasers, bells and whistles and a damn coffee maker hanging off them. At some point I realized how silly that all was and discarded all the gadgets. Since then I am using iron sights pretty much nothing else ;-)

Nothing screams "I'm over here shoot me first!!!" like a weapon light while clearing a building. If you are serious about seeing in the dark, go NVG and leave the gun alone.

One other side effect to hanging crap on your gun, it often degrades accuracy by changing barrel harmonics. Let's face it, how many of us are ever going to be doing actual CQB in the dark? If things ever get that bad, I'm with the group that thinks, blast the crap out of it and then go in and see what was there but be prepared to repeat the process as needed. Much healthier that way.

Depends on the rifle.
my nightstand AR has an optic and a flashlight and a laser with a pressure pad on an afg. I might take the optic off because inside the house the laser will probably work just as well and you don't need a cheek weld to see it.
One of the SBRs has AFG, red dot, and back up sights. Same as with the newer midlength i just built.
A1 clone is wearing nothing but what stoner gave it.
I have a box full of vfgs, bipods, etc that I sometimes pull out to put one on something that's not an AR.

FIX YOUR CARRY HANDLE/SIGHT. If your handguard is on right, you don't need the handle to help hold it in place.

Im gonna guess he placed the carry handle at the balance point. With the extra weight at the muzzle it probably carries better where its mounted.

Im not sure how it would affect a sight picture or holdovers but id be checking that out and ready to defend myself. Just sayin'

I’m of the “you do you” mindset. It’s your rifle. I’m not the one that has to fight/hunt/compete/play with it. So if you think you need something or just want something then go for it.

Personally, over the years I’ve gone more minimalist...sling, optic, maybe a forward grip, only one of mine has a light on it.

Minimalist here ... ounces make pounds and pounds make pain. I run three things ... Micro Red Dot because my eyes are old, a good set of BUIS in case Murphy shows up and a good weapon mounted light cause more stuff goes south at night than in daylight and trying to work a light in one hand and a carbine in the other sucks. Other stuff adds weight and more snag points.

Who has small enough fingers to fit in one of those rear sights that look like carry handles? I know I can't fit my fingers in them. Not a carry handle, just an oversized rear sight.

I like simplicity and I think that form should follow function. If that were my rifle, I'd mount the carry handle in its proper position, and I probably wouldn't have gone with that handguard or magwell. But that's me.

I have one AR with a light, optic, and back-up irons. Its also the only one that waits loaded in the safe for things that go bump in the night or getting out of dodge. All of the others have only what they need. scopes and bipods on the range guns, illuminated optic on others, no unnecessary tactical accessories.

I've learned its easy to turn a lightweight carbine into a boat anchor with tactical accessories.

Since you asked, that rubber buttstock cover thing is a sign to me. It's a sign that you shop at CTD and said "oh, only $10, why not, let's add that too!"

I've been there, my first AR 15yr ago got a little too "tacticool" and I realized it was damn near 12lb. I went back to basics and now try to keep in mind weight, practicality, and simplicity while not sacrificing utility/reliability.

Fix that carry handle. You should never bridge the receiver and handguard rails, just asking for trouble, unless you're talking about a purpose built SWAN or Vltor CASV.

Ask yourself, when are you really going to use the light and/or laser? Then, are that specific light/laser the best suited for the task? I prefer pistol type lights on my AR's, they're light, relatively cheap, variety of options for brightness and throw, and they're so compact they're less likely to get in the way.

I run an optic, irons, and a light on my go to rifle. It’s a 14.5 inch rifle and I do like it but it’s a lot heavier than my 20 inch rifle that has standard plastic handguards and a carry handle. The light and optic are nice but I can really tell the difference when I switch between the two when practicing dry fire and/or live fire. If it was me I’d loose the mag well unless you’re doing competitions. If you do a lot of dry fire you’ll be able to hit the standard magwell fairly easy. Like most have already stated, I’d try to keep it as light as possible with only the things you need. The more you use it the better idea you’ll get of what works and what isn’t worth the weight.

Good luck

Minimalist here, if it adds performance I consider it. LED flashlight - no. A quality laser (Crimson Trace etc.) works better than many think, even as a short range hunting sight (I prefer green). Quality red dot - yes. Cheap sh*t - not on my guns.

+1 to all the you do you sentiment.

For me, I’m personally a “functionality” guy. I don’t add or remove things because of what’s in vogue (though often become aware of things because they become popular).

that gun in particular seems to have competing design elements. The 18” bbl and carry handle for example says “battle rifle”, the light says “home defense/CQ”, triangle hand guard that’s not true Nam triangle says “a classic range toy with a clever twist”....none of these “work together” functionally, but so long as they “work for you”, rock on.

M2? Thats a Remington 11-87 tactical. Who's the redneck now, hillbilly?

Havent figured out a way to attach a bayonet to my Benelli. :).
Ahh I was reading your M2 thread earlier and I don't have my glasses on!

I hate almost everything about it but the Mandalorian emblem... But it's not my rifle so other than making fun of you at the range, I don't care what you do with your AR...

Of course, I have a Kevlar helmet... So, what do I know...
