PSA AK-V First Shots & Thoughts

Good luck buying one now. As soon as Garandthumb’s review came out they sold out instantly.

They've been selling out regularly. No worries on my end. If there's one thing that PSA is good at, it's finding a way to increase production to meet demand for the things that are selling.

Had not seen his video on them. I ordered one just before the posting above, along with an AKV small parts kit, and got it yesterday. Installed it and it isn’t quite as long as it looks.

I realize this is an older thread but I’m interested specifically in the Burris FF3 you have on your ak-v.

Which mount are you using and does it cowitness with the irons?

Are you still happy with your akv?

Thank you

Also - has anyone shot reloads through theirs? Interested how Coated projos like bayou and blue bullets are running?

I’ve put about 750 to 800 rounds of @Butter rounds through mine with zero issues. Those were all blue coated 115 and 147s. The AK-V is probably my favorite PPC at the moment (with the Stribog right behind) and I have quite a few. I even let my Scorpion go because it fell way down the lineup.

FF3 is mounted directly to the top cover rail. See my photo posted on page 1 of this thread for co-witness details.

Still very happy with my AK-V. No problems at all and it remains a lot of fun to shoot. If you're on the fence, let yourself fall and go get one.

Who else is still shooting theirs despite the barren 9mm wasteland we currently find ourselves in?

Made mine even better today, with the addition of an ALG trigger tuned by PSA for the AKV:

https://palmettostatearmory.com/alg-ak-trigger-05-326.html

Night and day difference. I have ALG triggers (owned by Bill Geissele's wife, Amy Lynn. Hmm, I wonder what her company's abbreviation stands for?) in several of my AK rifles and they are fantastic. Pretty straightforward install here, though the MAC bracket really does interfere with the hammer spring during removal/installation, especially if you want to prevent that infamous cobra bite. Though I typically leave it off my ALG-equipped rifles, I did opt to install the auxiliary spring on this. The trigger pull without it is reported to be about 2 lbs. and I didn't want to risk any bump fires indoors. However, I will probably remove it and test out this thing the next time I get outdoors. Even with the aux spring, the trigger is super light and crisp with about a millimeter of creep.

Quick run to the indoor range after work tonight to test it out. Fifteen rounds of Freedom Munitions reman 115 grain (or about $45 worth of ammo at today's prices ) at 25 yards. I aimed for the hole in the middle of the "6" and my red dot is zeroed for 50 yards, so this will do:

This damn gun still makes me feel like a kid every time I shoot it. So much fun! I've fed it just about every type of 9mm projectile, grain weight, factory/reloaded/remanned, brass/steel/aluminum-cased variant I own, and I can't get the thing to malfunction. Still going strong without a single hiccup.

Will the regular ALG AKT trigger work in AKV? I have one from 4, 5 years ago and it's been sitting.

Yep, a regular ALG trigger should work.

This modded trigger from PSA really only has its roll pin hole milled down a bit for better fitment. This trigger should also work in just about any other AK.

I have the triangle brace version and am having a hard time figuring out a good sling attachment method for the rear. Not a fan of the Echo93 kind that sandwiches between the pistol grip and receiver. I made one myself back when I had a M92. Any recommendations?

Did you have any issues with installing your ALG? I got one recently and followed all the instructions and when I when to function test it, the trigger would not reset. Figured I may have bent the spring somehow so took it out and put back in the original trigger and reset is fine so I know it’s not the spring.

@Derek8404 I did not run into any issues. Are you using PSA's ALG trigger for the AK-V, or one of ALG's -EL or -UL AK triggers? You're talking about the AK-V coiled main spring, right - not the ALG disconnect or auxiliary springs? And did you need to use the included roll pin (i.e. the trigger fired in "safe" without it) and/or have any issue with an anti-slap rivet? Also, with the trigger cocked, if you wiggle the safety selector a bit does the trigger reset itself?

You may need to LIGHTLY take off a bit more material from the disconnector with a file until it clears. Before making any permanent modification I'd reach out to ALG and walk through the issue with them ... they might tell you to contact PSA but one of those two outfits should be able to guide you on what to do next.

Also, for reference here's the stock PSA trigger on the left and their AK-V modded ALG on the right. Note that shaved disconnector:

Yeah I got the AK-V model from PSA. Yes the coiled main spring and no, the PSA install video said those detents are not needed on the AK-V

Has anyone seen them come back in stock lately? I'd like to grab one since the PSA AR-V is kind of a let down, at least until they are selling complete or stripped lowers.

They had a model or two in stock a few weeks ago...didn’t last long from what I saw. There are a few YouTube vids on how to catch items in stock on PSAs site...don’t depend on the in stock notifications.

Also, just based on your comment above about the AR-V...pretty sure the lower and upper are proprietary, so a stripped/complete lower is a no-go without their upper. Just curious on what are you looking for to be different on the AR-V? They’ve got 5 models out now...3 with 10.5 barrel, 1 with 8 and 1 with a 4. I’m assuming they’ll end up with many more, like with the AK-V. I didn’t get one yet as I went toy shopping recently! :)

I shot my AK-V suppressed this weekend and got to try out a PSA mag with the extension (50 rounds). The mag ran flawlessly and the gun suppressed was fun! :D

ARV lower plus CMMG RDB 5" barrel and bolt combo. That's what I want. So I want to buy the lower and build the upper.

Is there a source or confirmation the upper is proprietary?

Edit: found on an Ammoland article from June. "Read more: https://www.ammoland.com/2020/06/ca...akl-with-palmetto-state-armory/#ixzz6anHYLhnc

So although you can use any of your favorite AR accessories on it, it is still a completely new lower and not compatible with other AR uppers other than Palmetto State Armory’s proprietary wider Upper built to match the ARV’s lower."

So I wonder if I can just swap the BCG and Barrel from CMMG into the wider upper?

Ah, that would be a good combo...PSA/Scorpion mags and CMMG upper. I’ll have to search, but pretty sure I heard that proprietary comment in a PSA update video a few months ago. I could be wrong as that’s going from a fuzzy memory!

Edit...looks like that update vid has been removed from Boobtube. I’ll search some more as now I’m really curious...maybe the proprietary comments were about the JAKL...

Edit 2...nope seems to be proprietary on the AR-V
“The AR-V features a proprietary upper and lower receiver as well as a proprietary bolt. The upper and lower make it easy to work with the CZ Scorpion magazine. This includes last round bolt hold open and a unique magazine release as well as a bolt release.”

Here’s another source that had the vid that was removed where I heard it a few months back...

During our conversation, Dale mentioned that the ARV’s lower was redesigned from the trigger group forward to accommodate the wider Scorpion compatible magazine, as well as it has a mag release forward of the trigger guard replacing your typical mag release button. Not exactly what you’re looking for but this popped up this week for the AR-V...you can at least customize the barrel, stock/brace and handguard. Not sure about the barrel compatibility...it says something about converting your PA-9 to the AR-V in the description.

That's a very interesting looking BCG. Gives me NO hope of getting the CMMG RDB kit to work with it!

itching to shoot. I took the AK-V and the Extar EP9 Out today. EP9 was fun but the AK-V is ridiculous.

running plate racks etc. inside of 25 yards was almost too easy.

I have the classic handguard, but want to upgrade to something I can use to mount a light. This is the Magpul fore end just the stock AK version?

The AK-V is the most fun to shoot PCC I have ever fired. That thing just puts a smile on anyone’s face who shoots it.

SLR AK-V hand guard is very nice, but not cheap. If you want a Magpul to fit it, PM me (or whatever it’s called now)...it’s grey, but will cost you nothing! Got a grip to match too.

Here's what I did with my Magpul LHG. Has held up well:

You could also drill holes in your classic LHG to attach a light mount.

Now that @amnesia has the forum fixed, HURRY! There are a few in stock! I was able to get a black Moe variant. FINALLY!
I had to stop to read this guys text message to tell me to hurry up
