Making wooden plugs

Those are very nicely made, how long have you been making them?

Wow! Very nice! If'n you can make 'em that well, you don't have to cruise flea markets for vintage plugs. There's lots of 'em available now, and generally they go for $5 apiece in good condition, unless you buy a whole rack of 'em.

Outstanding pogey/menhaden pattern, me likes..................... Come up with a jumping mullet pattern just like these and you will not need anything else.

Top water spook. And make another one like the purple over orange one with the red gill in the first pic and put the screw on top. That will be just enough to give it a little swimming motion. Always put a little red on your plugs, eyes, gill, or a small swipe on the belly. Doesn't have to be big, just a little red works.

For those of us that know zero about fishing, but happened to stumble across this thread...

How are you doing the designs on those? (And I’m assuming you’re making the whole lure from wood and then applying color)

What is the base wood? I ask as, in my experience from what I HEARD, NE Stripers will chew stuff up quickly.

Edited because of potential striper jokes...

I know there's a stripper joke in here somewhere... I just haven't thought of it yet...

Yes they are made for solid wood. I've used Mahogany and Poplar and Quilted maple. ( some scrap pieces ) Turning them on a lathe to desired dimensions and shape.
Thru holes drilled, hook holes drilled then they are soaked in thinned Spar varnish for a few hours. Let to dry 24 hrs. then propped infront of a heater to get warmed.
Primer next, heat again. Then color of choice applied by Airbrush.
Usually a base white, then pearl belly , Scale color, back color, fade color, highlights. Back in front of the heater while mixing epoxy.
Epoxy coat while on a spinner to keep the epoxy from sagging.
Bend thru wire, add hooks ... go fish.

This thread will give you an idea. https://www.carolinafirearmsforum.com/index.php?threads/making-lures.49583/

see above. If any get destroyed by Stripers , I know a guy that can fix or make more :D

There is a website called stripersonline.com. Be careful that you don't add an extra "p" in the address. Could make for uncomfortable questions from the boss.

Just like White House . Com versus White House . Gov

I learned the difference when a political science college professor accidentally went to the wrong one while projecting his screen to our whole lecture hall... (18 years ago)

Now the question is "How many of our fellow degenerates typed in the stripper website address to test it out?"

Awesome work. Are you adding any weights in the baits, if so how. I’ve only messed with Amazon blanks, really want to try making my own bodies but there isn’t enough time in the day so far.

I don't have the weight thing down yet. I just used some old egg sinkers with a " yeah, that should do it"
I tested down at the river as I went. The most trouble was the position of the weight. A few of these have lots of wood filler in the old holes.
If you need any shop tools, bring the wood and we'll get you sorted.

I will likely take you up on that offer at some point. Are you just using regular poplar boards like Lowe’s or Home Depot sell?

Yes, those can be used. It's best to start out with square stock. In a width that will fit the lures max diameter.
This way you'll have square ends to get all the holes drilled square and true with out it rolling around on the drill press.

I’d like to try out a couple of them on top water bass at the big pond at the house.

I'd rather buy from a member to tell you the truth!

Just me. I'd rather buy from Southside Hardware in Archdale than go to Lowe's too.

Am I close ?
The purple came out too big from an oops on one side so I had to match the other.
I should have used a hole in s stencil.
