Were any of you aware that the Corps is getting rid of its tank Bns? I was greatly surprised to learn this. They're supposed to replace them with something but I know little about what. From what I can learn it sounds like a a guy in a jeep with a LAW or maybe a "bloop".
If anybody knows anything more I'd appreciate hearing about it. I was pretty good friends with a guy that used to be in flame tanks. Know how far back that goes?

There was a big write up about this in marine corps times...and it not just tank bns...dumping some infantry bns and gutting field artillery...a lot of big changes

Higher ups want a leaner force to face the Chinese threat in the Pacific. Also getting rid of some heavy lift helos and tilt rotors (Osprey) squadrons. 80 yrs ago it took tanks to dig Japs out of bunkers/caves in the Pacific. They also needed tanks at the Frozen Chosen against same Chinese, tanks in Hue and Iraq. And just a reminder that the US Army did more Amphibious landings in WWII than the Marines :)

Every single time they do this it bites us in the ass.

And every 4-8 years there’s talk of the Army absorbing the Corps as just another elite unit.

There are upper echelon pogues that have been after the corps for years.

Lighter, quicker, faster!

As Chdamn stated, every decade or so they feel the need to fix what isn't always broke! This is just a more radical evolution of the OTH (Over The Horizon) changes from the 80s and 90s.

So in effect they’re recreating the Marine Corps into another “rapid deployment” style force? Light, mobile with teeth but not much muscle to back it up.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the combined arms approach has worked well for years and that was the strength of the Marine Corps. Taking away two pillars of that, especially the pillars that don’t need to have an airfield or even total air superiority doesn’t seem to make sense.

All tanks, all bridging companies, all MPs (YAY!!!!!), several squadrons, and axing 8th Marines.

1) The Marines will have three fewer infantry units and will shed about 7% of its overall force as the service prepares for a potential face-off with China;

2) The Marine Corps is cutting all military occupational specialties associated with tank battalions, law enforcement units and bridging companies.

3) The Marines are also reducing its number of infantry battalions from 24 to 21 and cutting tiltrotor, attack and heavy-lift aviation squadrons.

4) Units and squadrons that will be deactivated under plan include:

3rd Battalion, 8th Marines
Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 264
Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462
Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469
Marine Wing Support Groups 27 and 37
8th Marine Regiment Headquarters Company.

5) The 8th Marine Regiment's other units -- 1/8 and 2/8 -- will be absorbed by other commands.

6) Artillery cannon batteries will fall from 21 today to five. Amphibious vehicle companies will drop from six to four.

Cost savings associated with trimming the ranks will pay for a 300% increase in rocket artillery capabilities, anti-ship missiles, unmanned systems and other high-tech equipment leaders say Marines will need to take on threats such as China or Russia.

7) The Marine Corps will also create three littoral regiments that are organized, trained and equipped to handle sea denial and control missions. The news release describes the new units as a "Pacific posture." Marine expeditionary units, which deploy on Navy ships, will augment those new regiments.

On the local level, this stinks for 3rd and 1st (Okinawa and Pendleton), but with the MARSOC moves there will be a huge boost to Lejeune.

Does the army even have an order number for Crayola? Or will they cheap out with those generic brand crayons you get from Applebees in the mean time?

Okay, so they’re paring down and recreating units similar to the Marine defense battalions of WW2.

@Booger, they have given up on crayons!

They ordered 200k sets of water colors from the frizzy haired dude that was on PBS Sunday mornings, til he died.
