Cooper gonna shut it down

I drive all over Charlotte all day and haven't seen cops hassling folks any more than normal. I'll report back if I see different.

What I have seen are hundreds upon hundreds of dogs! If I wasn't practicing social distancing, I wouldn't be getting any work done for all the dogs I would be going to pet. I believe dogs are the real winners in this whole quarantine event.

Oh, and tree sperm. Plenty of that going around too. No doubt, Braxton Winston has enough on his car to consider it a hate crime by now.

The DC Mayor is saying that if you VIOLATE her Majesty's "STAY AT HOME ORDER", you can be imprisoned for up to 90 days and fined ($500 or $5,000). NOW, if her worship were JUST that tough on the folks that rob and maim and defecate and such.....then DC would be a much better place. BUT, until the "swamp rats" are dead or exterminated or sent back to their original locale....it still sucks.

There MAY be an exemption to M'Lady's EO....if you are a convicted felon with a firearm with a filed off SN and you are delivering recreational Rx as well as slappin' around your stable of hookers.....You are EXEMPT as you are engaged in an essential business. ONLY IN DC....

I talked to a guy earlier this week who got harassed by a cop at a gas station in Charlotte. He does paving and was filling his vehicle at the station. Cop walked up and asked what he was doing out. He said he was going to work and that his business was an essential business. She told him essential businesses are doctors and nurses, not pavers. He had to call his office so she could talk to his boss.

I have no problem believing it was an isolated incident, but there it is, all the same.

I've thought about it for a few days.
  • It's just wrong for people to go places where they don't need to go. Some number will have it and spread it around without them knowing it. And people will die because of that.
  • But liberty minded people like ourselves bristle at the notion of politicians demanding we bow down to their authority, especially when it is contrary to the freedoms explicitly affirmed in the Bill Of Rights that so many have fought and died to preserve.
  • I finally landed here: I think most of the restrictions are probably Constitutional, and morally right. But I am frightened by the number of my fellow citizens, who hearing these politicians, do not render any skepticism as to whether the politicians have such authority, and they so quickly, freely, and unquestioningly surrender their rights.

Quarantine or not, tyrants, wolves, politicians, megalomaniacs, tender caregivers whose compassion for our well being knows no bounds not withstanding, I've been getting tickled pink at the mental and cognitive gymnastics of what is considered essential, just based on the definition of the word 'essential' alone.

Honestly, I could start a business today, wherein I come into your house and rate your produce on a scale of 1-10 on the basis of shape and color, and I could be considered essential based on the loosest affiliation to agriculture ever known.

I thought it started today

It did. At 5 PM.

I really don't think much will change. A LOT of people are largely home bound due to kids being out of school and being furloughed from their jobs. There are so many exceptions to the current order, that it isn't that much more restrictive than what was already in place. I think Cooper did the current order largely to look like he was doing more, whether to please his base, not embarrass himself, or whatever.

Getting gas.

You, Officer Steinach?

I've thought about this quite a bit as well. People are dying. Large numbers of people are dying. As much as individuals here balk at stay at home orders and other similar mandates. People are still dying of a disease that has had unprecedented ability to spread across this country and the world via contamination from other individuals. I read somewhere persistence of the virus on some surfaces was 17 days on the cruise liners. 17 days. When you pump gas, how long ago did someone with COVID-19 handle that pump? How long did or will that persist? What about when you hand your card to the register person at McDonald's or Chick-Fil-A, she's wearing gloves, but that only protects her. If the car in front did the same transaction with a card and they are infected, she could have picked up the virus from their card and then transferred it to your card. Or maybe it was 20 people in front of you. And maybe they're not sick, but they got it from the last cashier who handled the card.

Fortunately, I'm in SC right now. We don't have a shelter in place order. We were told to use common sense. I really appreciate how all the electronic road signs say, Save a life, stay home. So, what I'm getting at is that it's not about our own risk and our own freedoms, but about others risk and their freedoms. I come to Charlotte regularly, and yes I'm inconvenienced, some times a lot. But, not inconvenienced to the point I think my freedoms are threatened. Not, when I know others may be at risk, based on what I do. When I do, that's another story. This isn't New Orleans, yet.

As I see it.

I find it laughable that people defend the 2nd all day long but a virus has them throwing out a number of the other amendments. Trump has danced around the legality of what the governors r doing. He knows, because he has good lawyers, no one can issue a legal stay at home order unless have some sort of marshal law declared. Now it might be dumb for someone to go out somewhere but it’s not illegal. Just like these governors and sheriffs are backing down as soon as some goes to court. Why because they consult the lawyers who tell them they will lose big on 2A. What do u think is gonna happen when there r legal challenges to 1a and 4a. Now these politicians will see this when this is done and cities get sued and lose. They will then try to pass some bs law allowing certain rights to be suspended in some way. Watch and see. Dont get emotional about moral right and wrong. We all know it’s wrong to go to an area packed with people right now. Read ur constitution and decide if it’s right for ur government to deny u any right in the document for a reason they see fit.

Hmmm. She didn’t mention police. Maybe he should have asked her why she was at work? Unless she cross trained/licensed as a “doctor or nurse”.

individual. Responsibility. These days in my over privileged middle class american life going to the gas station or grocery store to BUY (lol) food and energy is, ironically, the most “dangerous thing” I do. For some it’s hunting an African beast for a meal. For me, it’s touching 3500 calories of prepackaged Oreos on a shelf. I wear gloves. Same when I pump gas. Sometimes I don’t waste a glove for gas and use a napkin to hold pumps and press the buttons. Press “yes” on touch screen inside? Use napkin (should already have some in pocket these days) and pick up the stylus to hit “yes” instead of touching with finger...

this doesn’t have to be difficult.

im not speaking to you per se, but those who still haven’t figured out how to maintain proper pandemic hygiene 2 months into the gig.

I'm watching the news this morning, why aren't these roving reporters staying at the office? One is standing if front of raliegh PD telling the viewers about staying at home. The other is out reporting on something the police are at.

Ok so news is essential, roving reporters are not.

So the "free government money" is going to start being issued this week -and they are telling everyone to stay home. That's like giving candy to a child and telling them not to eat it. There's going to be a LOT of essential shopping soon!

I am also of two minds about these policies. Being in an essential business, family owns a small c-store and fuel delivery business, I have become very cynical about the people in this country. While you or I have been observing social distancing and only going out for groceries and other essentials, I have seen people and heard about people going about their business like there is nothing wrong in the world.

For Example:

1) We put a barrier in front of our counter to increase the distance from our cashier to the customer. I have routinely seen customers move it out of the way and lean over the counter. When you remind them, they get upset and call you a racist.
2) People coming in just to "play their numbers." Lottery tickets are not essential. If you are getting food or gas, I have no problem with you purchasing additional items. But putting yourself and others in danger just to get your gambling fix, that upsets me. That is why I think they should cancel the lottery.
3) People coming in two or three times in the day just to get one beer each time. Limit your and my exposure and buy two, three, or lord forbid a case so you do not have expose yourself and others.
4) Same as the above but with cigarettes and blunts.
5) People standing close to each other in lines. We had to put tape on the floor to remind people to stay six feet from each other.
6) One customer told me about her daughter in Charlotte who went out to get her nails done before the order to close. She said the salon was PACKED.

While I think you or I do not need these orders and can rely on our common sense to take appropriate measures, a vast number of people in this country do, and not only do they need to be reminded to do so, they, unfortunately, need to be, I do not want to say forced, but strongly encouraged to do so.

Went to the grocery store on Sunday to stock up on fresh items for the week. A loud mouthed, knuckle dragging, idiot came in with his collection of rug rats. No social consideration for others exhibited in the least. Unruly brats running through the isles banging in to everyone as they just pushed their way through. Yelling loud enough to be heard through the store undoubtedly depositing their bio particles on all the products in the process. It was difficult, but I kept my mouth shut and got out of those isles. They need to be locked in their whatever domicile they crawled out from and have the doors welded shut.

Two rants:

For eff's sake, if you're going to post, please try to use marginally decent spelling and structure. Some posts on this forum now are too hard to read.

My wife is on the next door neighbor app (I think that's what it is called), and in the neighborhood next to us, people are losing their ever-loving minds: talk of calling the cops of kids playing outside, stuff like that. I told my wife to not say anything to anyone, especially electronically...I do not want to put a target on her, us, our kids, or our house.

As for SIP, there's less traffic in Durham, though all the fastfood chains have crazy-long lines. There's still a lot of people out, but there's going to be a lot of people out when so many businesses are considered essential.

Can't you make the decision to not sell lottery tickets in your family store?

Reminds me of what Mr. Miyagi would say. Left side of road, ok. Right side of road, ok. Middle of road, squish like grape. These halfway quarantine “orders” are virtually worthless. People in the medical field that I’ve been talking to say this sucker is going to explode here in the next week or two.

The families on both sides of my home have had birthday parties since the lockdown order. 20 or so kids, babies, and adults each time.

What about Marschal?
what about

heard a rumor about ABC shutting down.........welp guess that 'investment' in local business will pay off nicely!

We take precautions to protect our employees. I have them wipe surfaces every hour with bleach and use hand sanitizer after each customer. Plus we are trying to enforce social distancing requirments. I am open and provide essential services such as food and fuel. Can I make the distinction between somebody who is buying food and wants to get a lottery ticket and somebody who is just getting lottery tickets. If you go to walmart and buy a TV and no food, is Walmart going to turn you away and refuse to sell you the TV. No they will not.

My beef is with the people who are a member of an at risk population and are making unnecessary trips to purchase a nonessential service. I do not think people are being smart about this virus.

From WRAL:

6 a.m.: Police departments in North Carolina are enforcing the statewide stay-at-home orders in different ways.

Fuquay-Varina police say they will give citations to repeat offenders gathering in groups, while Raleigh police say they are not stopping people just because they’re out of their homes but will respond to blatant disruptions.

Johnston County deputies said they will follow Raleigh's approach, and Durham police sent out a memo to their officers explaining that a person being out of the house does not create reasonable suspicion to stop them.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office will also not stop people to enforce the stay-at-home order. No law enforcement agencies will be asking people for paperwork to prove they are "essential personnel."

This I find incomprehensible. Are the people preparing that food wearing masks and gloves? If not, why would you even get it? Seems like a no-brainer to 1) put at least minimal PPE on the food handling employees, and 2) NOT buy it if they don't have that minimal PPE. I got gas this weekend, at a station with an attached fast food restaurant. When I passed by, I saw that at least the counter person, who was handling the outside of all the items (at a minimum), had no gloves on. Then she went over to one side and coughed. As Spock would say, "Fascinating." Or, maybe, "asking for trouble."

As an EE, I have worked in the semiconductor fab portion of my industry. I've worked/been in, oh, three university, two industry, and one military clean room. over the years. If you are doing Class 100 or Class 10, you don't half-ass that stuff and expect good results. I would expect a lot of parallels between medical/germ isolation and PPE, and semi fabs. What I see on a routine basis doesn't even come up to the standards of half-assing.

I went to Cook-Out last week and everyone was wearing gloves. I assume anyone that was actually displaying signs of illness wouldn't be allowed on the prep line or anywhere near food. That's SOP in the food industry.

You would think, but after what I saw, I wouldn't count on it. And that's not the only one I saw, only the most egregious.

@RFMan this was yesterday on my way home, the traffic on the right side the picture was backed up to 15-501, trying to turn into Krispy Kreme, because yesterday they were giving free dozen donuts to healthcare workers....

All of the fast food joints, all the lanes are super busy. Not like that obviously, but busy none the less.

my krispy kreme had a line that wrapped twice around the building and blocked traffic... although if you parked next door and walked in, you could be in and out in a minute. I almost did it since i work right next door, but some of the staff did that on their lunches and i got ONE donut...
i am pleased with the strength of my will.

I've been sitting here watching this volleyball match of comments and I'm unable to ascertain...

Should we support businesses and at least *try* to keep people from getting laid off at the expense of a small (albeit serious...but still >small<) risk of exposure?

Or are we supposed to cower in our homes for 30 days?

What about groceries during those 30 days? Do we suit up in ET gear to go to Harris Teeter? No? Why not?

Common sense, people. Stay spread out, try not to touch stuff--clean your hands when/if you do.
