"Itā€™s not clear what happened here, but one thing is clear: Venezuelaā€™s story doesnā€™t add up. For one, Resolute was 13 nautical miles off the coast of Isla de Tortugaā€”territorial waters extend up to 12 miles. Also an unarmed cruise ship that takes no aggressive action cannot be an aggressor and commit ā€œpiracyā€ against an armed navy patrol boat. Finally, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre is a non-partisan agency that would have records of it giving Resolute permission to leave the scene."

BWAHAHAHA!

Imagine claiming a CRUISE SHIP attacked and sank one of your WAR SHIPS!

The Naiguata was built in 2009 by Spainā€™s Navantia shipyards as a coastal patrol ship and displaced 1,453 tons. The Naiguata was 259 feet long and had a top speed of 22 knots. This ship was also armed with a 76-millimeter Oto-Melara rapid fire deck gun, 35-millimeter Oerlikon Millennium close-in weapon system, and two .50-caliber machine guns. As a surface ship, Naiguata typically embarks with a crew of 34.

The Resolute, built in 1993, is 400 feet long and 59 feet wide. It displaces 8,378 tons and normally carries up to 146 passengers.
RCGS Resolute is a purpose built polar expedition vessel of the highest ice class, rated 1A Super, designed to operate in difficult ice conditions.

Despite the guns, the warship was out classed. It was like running into the proverbial brick wall, only tougher. Captian, I think they scratched the paint.

"Despite the guns..."

Actually, it's IN SPITE of the guns.

There's a reason warships have weapons...and that's to engage others AT A DISTANCE.

If they had actually done that instead of trying to brute-force shove another ship which out massed them by nearly a factor of 6, this wouldn't have happened. Heavy construction or not, that cruise ship would not have withstood being shot up with those guns.

The Law of Gross Tonnage isn't just a good idea in 72 COLREGS...it's effin' physics.

Some one must have been smoking a lot of dope or drinking a lot to issue the engagement orders.

we should go to Venezuelan and board a large Navy ship.

the crew would surrender one we offer free health care.

we could all be pirates!

Might want to check the article, that wasn't all:
BERLIN ā€“ A Venezuelan navy ship fired shots at a German-owned cruise ship on March 30 and rammed into the passenger vessel, leading to the sinking of the warship in the Caribbean.
So, either they are really lousy shots, or their guns are made as well as their ships.

Given that they apparently wanted the ship (because they were attempting to force it into port), they obviously weren't intending to actually shell it.

Como se dice "Woops!" in espanole?

Reminds me of "The Enterprise Incident"

SPOCK: Commander, shall we speak plainly? It is you who desperately need a ship. You want the Enterprise.
COMMANDER: Of course. It would be a great achievement for me to bring home the Enterprise intact. It would broaden the scope of my powers greatly. It would be the achievement of a lifetime. And it would open equal opportunities for you.
