Destroying a classic, Remington Sportsman 48 tactical.

@dbarale The stock bearing plate that was mentioned earlier will fit up in the receiver and will not be visible just looking at the firearm. Remington used the stock bearing plate on all wood stocked shotguns. It spreads the force of recoil evenly on the plate so the wood stock does not chip out around the edges. It is not used on synthetic stocks. There should be room for it since it looks like the original stock. Pretty sure I have an extra one, if you want flip me a PM with your name and address and I will send it to you.

Any update?

Not much, been really busy at work lately and the project has been on the back burner. I did get a Tactstar sidesaddle from a Mossberg that I need to modify for the Remington. I also found a Remington +2 extension for sale on the "other" forum but the seller is MIA. Probably busy too.

I will send you a message. I did a little research and found some mentions of the early 11-48 not having the plate. Looking at the very tip of the stock it is quite evident that it makes full contact within the receiver AND maintains a slight gap around the outside with no signs of cracks, so I don't know?

Sounds good, I can send you one. If the stock no longer fits flush when you install, you do not need. Then you can throw it your box of stuff:)

Found this in my pile of random 870 stuff. Sling mount/hand stop so you don’t blow out your fingers (came with 14” duty shotguns). Does anyone need it for their TAC-14? Free, just claim it here.

I am bored. So I am going to order a bead and install it.
I am trying to decide between a regular brass bead and a small fiber optic bead like the one below. What do you guys think. The brass would match the gun better. I am also wondering if the fiber would be long enough to gather any real light? Looking for advice/experiences...

I like the looks of the fiber on my 835 and it does come to the eye just a touch better when it is cloudy and overcast. It is not really that bright tho.

You don’t need no dang sight ... don’t you know you don’t have to aim a shotgun ... it magically hits what you want it to just by pointing it in the general direction :D.

No back to reality ... for your project I’d go brass bead the fiber optic just don’t belong.

See the problem with this one is that I don’t get the pump action sound that scares every bad guy away. So I might have to actually shoot it. A bead on top of the barrel really helps me quickly identify which end should be pointed at the bad guy when I bring it up to my hip...

I was just pondering the same sight for a recently started fixer-upper... My quick search didn't show much "variety" available for a plain bbl. I like this small post style better than the long contraptions, and I think it needs to screw on - magnets & such don't seem very stable/reliable?

My concern about this style would be the height of the post affecting POI.

So, Guinea Pig, get one & post a pic so I can see! :)

More boredom relief.
Spent some time with the little guy:

No flamingos were hurt in the making of this picture.

Then a little side project, one of the differences between the 11-48 and the 1100/870 is the length of the threaded portion at the end of the magazine tube. The 11-48 is quite a bit longer. No big deal when using the stock magazine cap, just use the right one:

870 on top, 11-48 on the bottom.

The problem is when you are trying to use a magazine extension from an 870/1110 the threads bottom out before tightening against the forearm. Which is not good. There are extensions made specifically for the Auto 5/Rem 11 but they’re out of my price range.

One solution is to shorten the magazine tube but that’s too easy and I don’t want to alter the gun that much. Besides, I am a man, I fix stuff with my hands. Or something...

So let’s spend too much time making something that I can probably buy for $5. Mini lathe to the rescue:

Getting there.

Done, now the 870 cap fits on the 11-48.

Man with all the little personalized stuff you gotta save this thing for the little guy!! I am digging this thing!

Another fun thread to follow! Great work. I like to see these gun projects like this in and Sharps40 does.

I like the looks of it "with" but I am weird so don't go by what I say.

I think I like the look with the plate too. Makes the gap look uniform. Pics zoomed out with the stock and receiver in frame?

A very generous forum member sent me a sidesaddle and Choate magazine extension.

The sidesaddle was easy:

The extension was pretty easy too but, it’s a +3. It’s a little too long for the 19” barrel and I cannot clamp it since the barrel moves under recoil:

So I figured maybe I could swap it with the +1 on my 870:

Nope. The blued extension does not match the parkerizing on the gun. And it’s really just too long.

But I think it shouldn’t be too bad to shorten it. The end is a roll crimp:

With a little patience and a hammer I should be able to get it pretty close. Then chuck it in the lathe to clean it up, a little cold blue...

But first I should ask, anyone with a +1 or +2 extension they want to trade?

Back to front sight issues...

I decided to go with a fat brass bead, the fiber optic just didn’t work on this gun. So I ordered one. $7, got here yesterday. Yeah!

I went to install it. No big deal, just drill and tap with a 6-48 tap.

Guess what tap size I do NOT have?

Earlier in the day I had used a piece of brass rod to fix the carburetor on my wife’s bike:

And the rod was still in the lathe, so the only logical option at that point was to make my own bead. I am an idiot...

That allowed me to control the shank size. So I drilled the vent rib slightly undersized that way it can still be properly threaded down the road. Then a light press fit and a drop of red loctite. Done!

Probably the last update, I had a little time today so I decided to cut the magazine extension. Turns out it was a +4. And yes I could have sold it and bought a +2 but this one was gifted to the project. And half of the point is to waste time and make stuff anyway.

I did a little Googling and found out that a Choate +2 extension is 6.25”. So I cut that one down to 6.5”, just because.

Then the trick was to plug it so the spring and ammo doesn’t just fall out. I originally thought about hammering the end to recreate the factory roll crimp. But I have this mini lathe and some aluminum scraps...

Slightly oversized so it is hard press fit into the tube.

Press it in, then taper the leading edge a bit:

I will touch up the edge will cold blue. But it’s otherwise done. I will shoot it and see if the plug shows any signs of backing out. If so, I will just cross-pin it. 6 rounds fit easily and feed well when I hand-cycle it. We’ll see...

Before you do inscribe something on it ... like Smile ... wait for the flash! ... :D just to add that last personal touch.

Final update, I was able to run a few rounds through it today. Probably about 40-50. It ran really well!
The only thing that failed to cycle was some cheap Remington target loads. Everything else was fine. My bead sight job seems to have worked as it prints well with buck and slug up to 25 yards. Did not try any further because I ran out of time.
No signs of the magazine tube extension plug backing out either. I am really happy.

Gratuitous pic for the pic lovers:

Dang did you end up with a sharp looking shotty.

I'd pick it every single time over that 870. Every. Single. Time:)

Something about that 48 just speaks to me ... while it wears wood it still says “I’ve got some class but mess with me and I’ll screw you up”. I also like the vintage recoil pad and your spacer work!

ETA: Are you going to side-saddle it? Maybe a nice classic leather sling?

Thanks. It does have a 6rds Tactstar sidesaddle. And I don’t really like slings that much unless I am going to carry it hunting, or I need it for transitions like on the 870. Leather would look nice though...
