A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for the coronavirus, in what may be the first confirmed case of an animal being infected with the virus in the U.S.

The tiger is a 4-year-old female from Malaysia, officials said. Three other tigers and three African lions also have developed a dry cough and were expected to recover, according to the zoo, which has been closed to the public since March 16.

A tiger tests positive... I’m sure the non-existent zoo attendees kept more than 6’ social distancing from a tiger.

While I do find it troubling if it is jumping species...what I find more troubling is that NY was complaining of not having enough tests for humans, but managed to find one to start testing animals.

Well I’m gonna have to agree with you. This is spot on. I think it speaks to New York people’s priorities. Next Cuomo will be stealing some Syracuse hospitals ventilators for zoo animal care.

If it’s actually jumping species this will be bad.

Yes it would. In America even more tragic considering the amount of people with pets holed up with them in the house. I’m not concerned yet because I don’t trust all the testing and data yet on something so new.

Don't we have scientists on here?

I are not one, for sure, but what mechanism prevents cross species infections?

I'm pretty sure we don't know exactly what the mechanism is, but believe it is facilitated by a virus with the ability to mutate quickly.

Making it up as they go along....never waste the opportunity for a good panic....even if fabricated.

Are you thinking what I’m thinking?

“shows us here on the Frosted Flakes box, where did your handlers touch you?”

Yeah, this is just freaking great, now I'm going to have to fend off zombie tigers, I hadn't exactly finished planning for full on I Am Legend shit so soon.

I want to make sure I don't downplay the danger of it going cross species, by any means...but again...could you imagine needing to have a loved one tested and being told "We cant, because we sent our last test kit down to the zoo because the tiger was sniffling"

What I was speaking of is typically a virus has to morph when it jumps species. And it can then jump back by morphing again. That could give us something really bad.

Probably not a test “approved” for human use.

I agree with this. The company my wife works for was just approved to do testing last week (trying since 21FEB). There are plenty of places that could do testing on a tiger without impacting who can do testing on humans.

All joking aside. If this is true, it's not good.

I'm going to stay off the internet as I need to be busy welding up traps. Not the squirrel size, bigger...
better hope you don't need to call an ambulance
if it looks like anything is dangerous, or after the first one steps on a theft-deterrent, they're probably going just fall back and let the police know, then tell the coroner they will have a dead body to pick up in a bit.

Well, there is that too...

And with the current "power grab" we have, I would not be at all surprised to see the WRC put some restrictions in place if this stuff is still with us come Aug/Sep.

Bump for the Country Joe reference

I'm ready for Corona Tigers... Got my N95 mask, my nitrile gloves, my Kevlar sleeves, and a couple of 30rd mags for my 10mm... Lol...
