My tags are due, and I don't want to go expose myself to some plague just to get the inspection done. Especially since someone else would be in my 'safe/sanitary' zone of inside my vehicle touching everything.

If I send in the money but don't get the inspection, what happens? I'm hoping to avoid the late fee and can get it inspected when this is done and then they send me the tags.

What he said. NC won't complete the registration w/o inspection or if your vehicle property taxes aren't paid, or if you can't prove/they can't verify current insurance coverage.

NC has become VERY efficient at coordinating systems in order to extract their revenue.

Evidently I’ve looked at all the free articles I’m allowed. Can you share any pertinent details? I have one with inspection due by the end of this month.

tl /dr = Currently inspections are required for renewal, for them to be waived the general assembly would/will have to take action as inspections fall under state law.

Just go get the dang thing inspected. The reality is, is that it is a slim to none chance of the inspector or the inspection place placing any sort of illness on to you

I've got to get one of my trucks inspected too. No problem. Gonna drive down to the shop, pay the money and drive back home. Nobody has ever actually been in my vehicle when it is inspected that I can remember.

I havent seen a cop since this started. Why take the risk? And there is definitely a risk.

The damn DMV offices are closed until April 15th anyway.

I see them routinely in the small towns, and State Troopers too, but no one pulled over.

If it's the tag office since they are contract. They make their own rules as far as being open. And were classified as essential

No this is the license office.

Going on something @Scsmith42 said - how old does a car have to be before no inspection?

went 2 years on an expired tag on a truck, a year on a motorcyle.

Got a ticket for the truck. Went to the DA and got it dropped when I provided a registration of a vehicle that had up to date tags.

Motorcyle was sold

YMMV

35 years or older are exempt from NC state safety inspections

20 years to exempt from the emissions inspection. My 2000 Tundra graduated this year to just the $13.60 safety inspection, just like a motorcycle.

Just in case it isn’t clear to anyone that the emissions inspection is on top of the safety inspection and has a different age out requirement.

A month or so back my inspection shop informed me of the change from 35 to 20 years.

@Mike Overlay and @HMP - I have found that this was changed to 30 years, rather than 35. I just renewed registration for my two 1990 vehicles online with no inspection. And the plate stickers came in the mail.
I was not aware of this, and the ncdmv website still shows 35 years, but others on this forum told me that the law was recently changed to 30. And I appreciated that. :)

I heard this somewhere also. Pretty crazy they haven't updated their webpage, probably don't want to loose that $13.

I'm going to go get tags for my Blazer in the next week or two, its an 86. I'll report back.. I will say when we got the J10 (79 model) DMV didn't require an inspection for the tag issue and it had sat for 10 years prior to going back on the road with us.

Curious.

Does it go by model year for the 20/30? Or actual manufactured date of the specific vehicle?

My *guess* is that it is model year, and not date of manufacture. They only have model year on title and registration, right? Not actual month/year of manufacture?
I can check the date of manufacture on my two 1990 vehicles tonite in the door jamb and let you know.

Thanks. I have an ‘03 that was made in fall of ‘02, so just curious how it would work in a couple years.

Yeah, I was at home trying to remember what the puter at the shop says

One more year for the project car then lol

So a 2003 gets its last emissions inspection in 2022? Or 2023?

I had to get the'91 model I leave at the beach shack inspected this past Nov for the last time.

2019 was the last emissions inspection for my 2000, so I would expect 2022.

This means I’d still be responsible for the tint, since I have 10 more years of safety inspections...but my CEL wouldn’t matter anymore? :D

just mail in your tag, and write "lost tag" on a piece of cardboard. Seems like it works for half the drivers on the road in Mecklenburg county.

PRO TIP: as long as you maintain minimum liability insurance you won't be arrested
