Me and the little lady went catfishing from the bank Yesterday at stumpy pond in SC. Used fresh cut blue gill and night crawlers as bait but only got a few bites.

What do you use for bait for big cats? I have tried stink baits, livers etc before but only ever caught small eating size cats off them. We are wanting bigger cats.

Thanks

Don't cut your blue gills.

Depends on the catfish you’re after. Big flatheads prefer live bait.... bluegill, goldfish and they hang out in brush piles or around other cover.

Blues like cut bait, whether it be bluegill or shad. I’ve caught them on both.

Channel cats is what you find in most ponds. You can catch them with worms, hotdogs, cheese, stink bait, bar soap...

Spam, cut into 3/4" chunks and put on a treble hook from the eye end then tied to the line. Some greasy stuff that puts out a grease slick you won't believe...

Along with the already listed great ideas, a lot of people I’ve met swear by chicken liver, but I’ve always found it too mushy and a pain to keep on a hook. So when I can find it I’ll use pork or beef liver.

Leave your chicken livers our for 24 hours before you use them. They turn rubbery and stink to high hell.

I've had good success with hotdogs, with other baits in the water completely ignored. Haven't caught anything huge on them.

Who needs bait?

I ain't noodlin', I don't care how many others do.

I've pulled in more than one big effin' snapping turtle in catfish territory, enough to know I want no part is sticking my entire arm sight-unseen into those places.

Nope...if the catfish ain't takin' a hook, I'll keep my fingers and hands and move somewhere else.

i fished moving water, yadkin river mainly i would catch shad and freeze them till time to use , use some for cutbait or hook one through the eyes with 12-14 inch leader, the moving water made look as they were swiming, caught nice catfish and stripers, also grasshoppers about the size of your little finger, chanells and blues love them ,their nothing huge but still fun to catch, the best bait i have used for flatheads are hornery heads, their not easy to come by.

Budweiser and Frosted Flakes....

Toss your Frosted Flakes in a blender, food processor or just put em in a ziploc bag and mash the hell out of them until they're almost like flour.

Put the mixture in a bowl. Pour the beer in a little at a time while you're stirring/mixing. What you're looking for is a firm dough.

Cats seem to love it and I've had pretty good luck with it.

Catfish get smart real fast.
Common wisdom for farm ponds is never throw a catfish back because you will never catch it again.

Point is, anything not "normal" to the pond is a losing bet for big cats.
Big channel & flatheads are predators.
Disabled bluegill under a big bobber right at dusk close to shore and be perfectly still and silent....winning.

If your using liver take a spool if thread with you. Put the liver on the hook and make a few wraps of thread around the hook. It’s the easiest and cheapest solution I’ve found for livers.
Same thing we do with barnacles for sheephead.
