Well tonight is my final time listing anything on Armslist. I had a young kid (20 yo) call me saying he wanted to meet for my LCP. Said he was willing to drive to me and we worked out a time to meet this evening.

Shortly after we spoke he texts me a picture of his drivers license and his “permit”. He wanted to make sure was “good” before he drives an hour a half one day to meet me. Permit looked legit and his DL was valid. I explained that he would have to give that permit to me. He was cool with that.

First red flag was that he was sending this info to me. That said, hey maybe he’s a first time gun buyer and doesn’t know how this works. Who knows? That said I know it doesn’t say anywhere in any statues that I need to take that permit. It’s what I do and end of story.

He arrived, looks at the gun and all is well. Then he hands me a blue piece of paper that looks like something he ran through a copier. The permit info looked accurate but it was 100% obvious he had made copies of the original. Normally it has a seal from the office lady. That was showing up in ink but not pressed in like they normally are. You can clearly see in the picture he sent me it was pressed in. Hell that document was white and this one was blue.

Anyways, I told him I couldn’t sell him the gun because of XY and Z. He then tried to say well the picture he originally sent me was blue as well. I wasn’t born yesterday and I’m not colorblind. Told him to have a safe drive back home.

It gets better though. He then calls me 20 minutes ago and I hit ignore because it’s 11:30PM. Texted him and told him to not call me this late. He said I’ve got someone with a valid permit. Told him I wasn’t dealing with someone that’s being sketchy. Wrote back and called me a “little bitch”.... I guess that’s supposed to change my mind on selling him a gun?

Worth my time to call the Martin County Sheriffs office tomorrow and let them know this guy is being shady with the permits they issued?

Definitely worth your time. At least you’ll put him on their radar. My guess is they may already have him in the system somewhere. Very sketchy indeed.

My gut told me something was off from the beginning with how this guy was acting. I don’t know about you but if I had a legit permit and I drove 1.5 hours one way I’d be pretty dang mad if someone didn’t want to sell me a gun. That said I wasn’t having his nonsense and was really firm with him pointing out all the nonsense.

Going to call in the morning

This gets better (or worse). I just googled his name and he has several charges out as of 3/19/2020 AND 4/18/2020. 100% calling the sheriffs office tomorrow.

Really appreciate the great advice to reach out to a mod. Hadn’t thought of that.... really.....

Edit:It’s 12:30... went through the whole mod list and I don’t think any of them are on. Sent Tim a message.

Probably lucky be didn't decide to rob you.

It's not a foolproof "background check", but it someone seems sketchy, run thier info through the public offender search.

https://webapps.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view

Pretty sure he was trying to buy a gun to most likely do just that. I actually had pulled that site up when I got home. His dad shows up but not him. He has pending chargers from last month and this month. How he’s out on bail I do not know. See above post if you didn’t as far as what I found when I googled his name.

You could also share his name, might help someone here avoid driving an hour to end up in the same situation you’re in.

Happy to PM you directly and will shortly. Let me talk to a deputy before I put this guys personal info on open forum.

for real though, you're trying to counterfeit documents and you can't even do a little wood carving to fake a raised seal?
I'm not saying it has to be perfect, but spend a few minutes with a dremel, people...

Curious to hear how the call to the SO goes.

I’m going to guess that since you don’t have proof of the fake permit, they do nothing and thank you for your call.

Only if you don't actually talk to an officer. Op just make sure you ask to make a report with an actual officer not a secretary.

5’4” and 134. Just step on him like a bug next time you see him.

Not a NC resident, so I'm not familiar with how things go with these "permits".

However, it's my understanding that in the absence of a CCW permit, one must present a pistol permit for any pistol purchase/exchange whether from a store or private sales.

To me, that means the ORIGINAL permit must be produced. A copy may be kept by the seller of the seller desires (or the permit number).

I work with official documents all the time in my job. Original documents, or verified copies of original documents. "Verified" being the key word.

I agree with your initial trepidation. If you are uncertain, you are under no obligation to follow through with the sale EVEN IF IT TURNS OUT LATER TO HAVE BEEN LEGITIMATE.

The guy's follow up behavior certainly raises additional flags, if only for being rude. And your search results also point to you having taken the correct route.

Make that call, file a report. Print and provide copies of the correspondence, including the email attachments.

Yes but he still has the picture of the one in white. Real or fake he has proof the guy tried to use it to buy a firearm. That is what I was saying.
Gotcha, I was thinking about the forged permit, assuming that the white one of which he sent a picture is genuine and was lawfully obtained. He has recent charges but no conviction yet so I believe it’s up to the Sheriff to require the permit(s) be returned and destroyed. I could be wrong on their ability to do so.

I don’t generally believe in helping the state enforce unjust laws. I’m unequivocally opposed to the PPP requirement, so while I won’t lose sleep over anything that happens to this guy, I can’t get fully behind going after someone based only on that. It sure looks like he might be a felon, but I also don’t want to have to do that legwork on every sale. That said, I wouldn’t have done the deal and probably would have called him a cop because nobody could be so stupid.

Anxious to hear the rest of the story, but I bet nothing happens, felons are acquiring guns every day, one guy not getting one doesn’t seem very actionable.

He also said he had felony charges... how did he get a permit? Whole thing sounds off

I think he said he had them pending. Depending on when he got the PPP and the date of the charges, it is feasible he had a valid one (they are good for 5 yrs or until the issuing Sheriff leaves office, whichever comes first, aren’t they?)

Trying to obtain a firearm under false pretenses, call ATF they do not like getting shot at, they will put it on the radar and skip local law enforcement!

Well the update is not much happened which wasn’t unexpected.

I called Pitt county and Martin County SO. Pitt County didn’t think it was their issue since he isn’t a Pitt County Resident. I spoke to a Corporal in Martin and explained the situation. He took his name and info down. Said that he has convictions in the past that should have prevented him from getting a permit in the first place. He did not look up if the permit had specifically being issued though. As of today he is not a Felon but has felonies pending. He didn’t mention any charges but did explain how I could look them up myself. See below.

Like I said, the first one permit he texted me looked very legit. The one he showed me in person was a really bad fake. This guy is no good. The Deputy said not to post his info publicly but to report him to any admins on Armslist. Don’t really see that as being an option since he’s a buyer.

I went ahead and emailed the arresting officer for one of his felony crimes in Pitt Co as well. Haven’t heard back. My goal was to give someone a heads up that this POS is trying to buy a gun that obviously shouldn’t be. Up to them on what they will do with it. Hopefully if anything it will keep one of their guys safe if they have any interaction with him again.

That said he is a African American male, less than 20 years old, drives a yellow Camaro and his license says his physical address is in Williamston, NC. Phone number currently ends in 7248. Between that info and the height/weight you all will know right away if you are meeting this guy. Stay safe

The permit that he originally texted me had an issue date of March 13th 2020. The charges listed above were all after that date. That said, the deputy that I spoke with said he had non felony convictions prior to the issue date that should have prevented him from getting a permit.

So he is NOT a convicted felon?

Per the Deputy I spoke with his is currently not a convicted Felon. that said he HAS previous misdemeanor convictions that would prevent him from being issued a legit purchase permit in the first place. That along with what I posted should give you reason enough not to deal with this guy.

Armslist could probably flag his email address to not allow his messages to sellers to go through. hopefully without actually telling him so he just doesn't use a different email account...

The sheriff should invoke the 'moral' clause of the permit and revoke it due to race. I mean that is the original intent of the PPP right? I mean, all this perry mason work and nobody mentions how to keep guns from 'dangerous' people

Go ahead and sell him a gun. I’ll send you his contact info. I’m sure you’ll sleep at night knowing you helped a future felon and a current non eligible person due to prior misdemeanors purchase a firearm.

I could care less about his race or any thing he has zero control of.... his actions of committing the above crimes, yeah that bothers me.

Good lord I’m not a local sheriff in the 60’s trying to prevent a black man from buying a gun. Common sense dude....
