I have been toying with the idea of a 10mm gun for a while. Would be a fun toy, outdoor gun as needed (not that I really go into the wild as much as I used to) and because 'Murica.

Im not wanting to drop a lot of coin on it, so looking at a cheap way to do so. If I like it then can go further into it, but I have never messed with 10 much so its also an entry into it.

I was thinking a LE trade in G21 with a either OE barrel and recoil spring/guide rod (seen some for the $60-75 range for barrel) or take off/conversion barrel. I have seen some CZ clones (EA I believe) with some cheaper options into the 10mm but I believe they are still more than the $500 mark (have not looked recently).

With the G21/G30 option, I could keep it 45 if Im not a fan, as I have been thinking about a 21 anyway for a house gun (was thinking a .40, but not being carried much not a big deal to go big). I could sell the 10 stuff for about what I have in it and no worries.

And another tool in the shed is never a bad thing to have.

I do not reload and dont plan to anytime soon, no room or time as it is. I know that is a downside to 10mm, cost of ammo.

Stay away from EAA. Customer service is a nightmare. Glock 20 or 21 would be the way to go.

you see some sub $500 G20’s come around no and then. tough to beat 15+1 of 10mm.

I used to be able to find 10mm target ammo for about 28cents per round
That may be a consideration. A $350 G21 and transfer (on the cheap side for the gun) then barrel, RSA, and mags I'm probably at $500 right there

I traded for an XDm-10 here a while back. I'm a glock user (fanboi in training?) for everything else but prefer the XDm in the larger calibers as I feel the grip isn't as "plastic 2x4" as the large frame glocks. Otherwise I wouldn't hesitate to get a glock 10mm.

Mine is the 5.25" version because why not. It's 10mm, more barrel is good:

If you're not going to reload, then cost optimizing the purchase is kinda futile. You're going to be burning a lot of cash on ammo... unless you don't end up shooting it much. I'll admit I don't shoot it much, after some drills and 60-70 rounds down range... you know you've been shooting something that's not your normal 9/40/45. Not that fun after a while. I got it for a very specific purpose though so it's OK, but it's not my first choice for a "let's go throw 100s of rounds down range" gun.

Or borrow one for a couple hundred rounds...you’ll know if it’s for you or not....

I think I am going to see if I can borrow one for some range time, $50 for ammo is a good way to know if I want to run down this rabbit hole or not.

I have a G21 converted to 10MM by my bed. It works great. HOWEVER you must order a 10mm Conversion barrel. The stock one won't work. OD is different. All I changed was the barrel.

If I can save on the gun would be able to feed the dang thing!
"I'm gonna buy a Glock and change a bunch of crap" isn't a recipe that adds up to cheap, and you'll be lucky if it works without buying more than one of something. Go with a used G20 and you won't have to futz around with it.

Ahh, I have read that a factory 10mm would work. The G21 route just got more expensive.

The plan was, based on reading before that has been quoted above as not true, was a factory 10mm barrel would swap right in. So a conversion barrel on a cheap G21 just got to used G20 price and is no longer cheap.

So we are clear, I had a G21 that I have had for 20 years. IF I was starting from scratch I would go for a G20. As it is I have 2 guns in 1 and all with just a conversion barrel change. It was my inexpensive way to go 10mm.

Ill pile on with the Rock Island...Mac up there sold me one a few years ago, and I love it. I dont get to shoot it as much as I would like to, but man its a blast. Good lookin to! (The gun...not mac...but he aint half bad.)

Your situation is different, not buying into it. Im looking at buying into it, so it wouldnt be as cheap. Now I wouldnt mind having it for 45 and 10mm, but starting from scratch into conversion (unless I can find a cheap conversion barrel, but I am sure they dont just pop up all the time) its going to be about the same price, if not more, than just going used G20

a few things to consider-

if you go Glock, go Gen 3. You'll find used ones for less and the aftermarket support is better. if it turns out you do like the 10mm, you're going to end up tuning the gun more. IMO for 10mm, the gen3 recoil assembly upgraded to a steel rod and your choice in spring weight is better than the gen4 rsa.

A used gen3 SF version will hold its resale value, should you determine 10mm isnt your thing.

stock glock barrel is fine if you're not a reloader but id recommend at least a heavier spring if you try out some of the real deal 10mm (Underwood, Buffalo Bore, etc) the heaver spring will keep the unsupported glock barrel in lock up a little bit longer and it wont beat the slide up as badly.

full house 10mm does best with aftermarket barrels with fully supported chambers. (i prefer KKM)

recommend starting with the g20 over the g29. you're more likely to enjoy it and you'll pick up a g29 later if you do. g29 can be a handful and may turn you off to the caliber.

factory loads have come down substantially over the years. lots of good "basic" 10mm loads out there for general blasting but the full house stuff is still pricey.

10mm is best mm. enjoy!

To those who have recommended the RIA - how does that shoot compared to a 45 1911? Had a RIA 45 1911 years ago and liked it, but sold to streamline some. I know being steel or alloy it will shoot differently than a poly gun. It is a consideration....

Like a 1911... honestly, unless you run something other than off the shelf ammo, it feels like a 1911 in .40. Most off the shelf 10mm is loaded about the same as .40. I was very disappointed, as I was expecting more. As a matter of fact, I loaded a mag up randomly with 10mm and .40, ran it, and couldn't tell any difference in the felt recoil.
