I'll describe this the best that I can, I couldnt get to my phone quick enough and it saw me through the window and flew off.

Ok, Im next to a pond, lots of ducks and geese (2 dozen or so).
Something just landed on the handrailing of my back deck - had the neck and head of a duck (looked like a mallard almost, as far as coloring goes), but had a small body, like the size of a pigeon. The body did not look like a duck body at all, very small

Female wood ducks kind of look like mallards.

I hope I see it again and get a picture.

Had an elongated neck and a head like a duck, but small body

Probably a woodie
 
Some breed of crane or heron perhaps?

Looking at pics of the Grebe that looks most like it, but didnt see if its feet - if it was webbed like a duck or clawed like a bird
