Hi friends. I have two pugs that are about 12 years old. They have a lot of allergies and cannot have flea and tick meds squirted on their backs.

For the last 5 or 6 years, I have been giving them Nexgard chewable flea/ tick meds, but I'm tired of taking them to the vet for yearly checkups. The vet charges $55 per dog plus extra for blood tests and fecal samples; all things that I think are costly and unnecessary.

Well, it's time for me to buy more Nexgard, but of course the vet won't give me a prescription unless I bring them in for 5 minutes and pay her another $200 for an "examination" where she pets them and speaks baby talk to them. I do that kind of examination 20 times a day...

I'm telling you guys, it feels like extortion. There is nothing wrong with my dogs. Just let me pay you for the dang medicine and go.

And the vet charges almost double what you can pay for the medicine if you order it online. But, of course, they don't tell you that every year when they are charging you $200 for examinations, unnecessary tests, and another $200 for the medicine.

I see that there are websites in Australia that will ship nexgard to me for 1/3 the price of the vet and no prescription needed.

My only question is, "Have any of you used an online source to buy pet meds without a prescription? Are there any websites you would recommend? "

Thanks!

Not sure about Nexgard but I have ordered flea and tick from BudgetPetCare.com for years. Canada I think -I know what you mean about vet prices -they even have some heartworm meds you can get without script. Hope this helps

I appreciate the recommendation. I just placed an order for 12 months worth (12 chewable pills) of Nexgard for $110. They did not ask for a prescription, and I paid with a credit card so I can dispute the charge if I feel hoodwinked in any way.

I'll give everyone an update after the meds come in.

Thanks again!

I switched away from my vet for the blood test every time I went reason. The vet I use now is like, “if she acts fine, she’s fine , if something changes, gimme a call”

So, the meds shipped out of Frankfurt, Germany about a week ago. They sent me a tracking number in an email. Today, I got a text from USPS saying that my package has cleared customs in Queens, NY and that my package will arrive on Tuesday.

I'll make another update when the package arrives.

Ivermectin for heartworms costs me about 10 bucks a year for 4 dogs.

For regular vaccinations and heart worm tests I take my dogs to Southern States. A vet runs a clinic at various locations and the costs are a fraction of what the typical vet charges. You can buy meds through them or order elsewhere.

Carolina Value Pet Care. Google it and they list locations/dates.

Sounds like you need a new vet.

We began buying our pet meds, including nexgard, from an online pharmacy in Miami, Allivet. They were the lowest price while being highly regarded.

I learned that there are a lot of counterfeit pet meds out there and most of those are the ones that are 50%+ less than your vet.

The meds arrived today. Everything looks legitimate. The pills came in a sealed blister pack inside a sealed box, exactly the way it comes from the vet's office. The expiration dates on the boxes look good.

I just gave my dogs a pill, and they ate it right up.

As far as I can tell, this is the real deal and I'm extremely happy with this company.

If my dogs get sick or die I'll post another update... But, (fingers crossed) I think this was a good deal.

I've been using Zirmectin brand Ivermectin for a couple decades. Multiple breeders and vets have been fine with it and none of the 5 dogs have ever tested positive for heartworms. The paste is in a syringe/plunger applicator with weight increments of 50 lbs. $10 will cover two 90lb dogs for a year. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/p...wormer-ivermectin-155-praziquantel-775-026-oz

Tractor Supply pissed me off a week ago when I went to pick some up. Some dildo posted on the interwebs that Ivermectin cures the BeerFlu, so TS pulled all of it from their stores. Screw the horse, goat, cattle, etc owners.
If the dumb-masses think a worm killer cures a virus, let Darwin do his work. Make sure you call first before you drive there.

@Alabamacoastie what vet do you go to? Your profile says Pittsboro and I am curious because my parents took their cat to one in Pittsboro that they really liked, though I can't recall the name of it.

Im happy to PM you the name of our vet, if you really want to know. I do have a vet that I've been using for years, here in Pittsboro. She's fine...

My problem is not with my vet, in particular... My problem is that they won't give me a prescription for Nexgard unless I bring my dog in EVERY YEAR for a checkup. This checkup costs $100.

The checkup consists of the vet tech petting my dog, on a table. Then the Vet comes in and pets my dog, on the same table. Then she says, "He looks great! Give me $100. Then I will sell you Nexgard at a 30% mark up... All the vets are doing this.

I know what you are going to say next... "They have to test your dog for heart worms before they give you nexgard because if your dog already has heart worms then nexgard can kill him. "

But, hear me out... If I have been giving my dog Nexgard (which kills heart worms) for the last year, then, HE DOESN'T HAVE HEART WORMS!

Haha. Im not shouting at you, @noway2 . I just hate knowing that I'm throwing away $100 every year so that a vet can pet my dog and tell me he's FINE. I already know he's fine!

And, just say my dog gets injured and needs to see the vet immediately... The vet will charge for the emergency visit, and the procedure to fix the dog, and for medicine, and an additional $100 for the yearly check up... Like she did everything she needed to do, but since you haven't been in for a regular visit in the last year, she pets him one more time and charges the extra $100....

It's infuriating. It's like they've found another way to steal an extra $100 a year from everyone.

But most people don't care.... "Whatever it takes to save my precious shnookums wookums."

I just want to buy flea/ tick/ heartworm preventative medicine. Don't extort an extra $100 out of me every year....

My vet says, if you e had her on them all year, she’s fine.

Is petting the dog all they really do, or do they at least do a cursory examination, such as check the eyes, ears, teeth, temperature, listen to the heart and lungs, etc?

We took in a kitten last November that was found in a French drain at work. She went to the vet so many times in the first few months and each time the way she got poked, prodded, and had things inserted in orifices, I was certain she knew what it would be like to be abducted by aliens.

Yes... Im exaggerating.

Good job saving that kitten. How much did all those alien abduction probes cost you? Estimate?

The Spay and Neuter Clinic here will do a heartworm test for $10. Maybe try your local clinic or shelter. I don't give my dogs heartworm meds in the winter so they have to be tested every spring. They never test positive.

98% of online pharmaceuticals are counterfeit. Probably closer to 99.8%. The meds are typically produced in China, in mostly uncontrolled manufacturing sites. The meds are then shipped to a secondary country, then re-packaged into the final retail packaging, again, in typically unsanitary, uncontrolled facilities. Then they are shipped to the distributing country (typically Canada for meds inbound to the US).

Also, consult the medicine's manufacturer and verify the online vendor is legit.

One of our mutts is a "rescue" aka "I'm in yer yard and ain't leaving".
He was eat up with the mange. Vet prescribed ivermectin, liquid form. We gave it from a syringe, orally.

Fast forward to 2 months ago; one of the other mutts is sick, she needed tending from the vet. She's heartworm positive (we already knew that, so did the vet).
So I asked about getting another bottle of ivermectin liquid- newer vet guy told me to buy a bottle of injectible ivermectin from TS, did the calcs right there and told me the amount based on the dogs weights to give them orally. Said it was the same stuff. So I did.
YMMV...

For vet medicine they have to be approved by a vet, same thing as human meds. If there is not a vet involved it is too shady for me. 11800petmeds is legit, they used to mail order before the Internets. We used them for first series of shots when we raised Basset Hounds. They are totally legit.

Thank you. Here she was at about 3 months old. She's pretty much turned into an adult looking cat and her features has matured.

It was odd finding one at work. She (and her mother) had obviously been around people because she wasn't afraid or skittish of them. I have a feeling she may be a pure bread Norwegian Forest cat by her physical traits (orange eyes, very fluffy tail, mane, tufts of feet hair, eye booger marks, and likes water with the outer fur that sheds it and coloration with no tabby stripes) but of course I have no proof. Not sure where she came from as there were some feral cats that were living by a building that has since been torn down, but I don't think she was one of them.

When we pulled her out of the drain, we made an appointment at a vet near work and took her up to get an FLIV test and a worm treatment since she'd been outside. I think that was about $65.
We took her to our normal vet, and the vaccinations took three rounds each which had a charge. I am going to say that was about $200 total. They also treated her for ear mites and tested for worms (anal probing). Being female, and wanting to stay with our normal vet, the spaying was about $225. Her first year was definitely expensive. Then again, we have an older male cat who had an emergency 'roto rooter' job when he got dehydrated from eating too much dry food and got bladder crystals and that was $500 and I don't even recall what it was to get his (cancerous) thyroids removed and now he takes a pill every day.

What's fun is when someone orders something from the out of country pharmacy. and then has a problem with. You have no help from the real manufacturers. They can tell it's fake from the lot numbers. Or if they try to bring it back to a vet and pass it off as gotten it there, lol

Do you know that if you get your meds from a vet, have a yearly heartworm test and show you have a record to show you have brought enough to give one a month and then your pet test positive; most of the pill makers will pay to have your pet treated for heartworms ( which can run $400-800 easy), but not if it from unknown source. Same for internal parasites.
