My buddy from over in Katy is looking at a hunting lease about 30 minutes from me. He asked me if I would ride by and check it out and send him some pictures. He's nearly 2 hours away and it might prevent him from making an unnecessary trip.

He let the land owner know that I would be coming to look it over. It is a 3000 acre tract of land that has a power line and a pipe line through it. When I got there I wasn't sure where the entrance was so, I called the land owner. Turns out, I was about a quarter mile from the gate.

Since we had about 5 inches of rain the day before and because I was driving a Honda CRV, I parked at the gate and set out on foot. There are all kinds of wildlife around here with a huge wild pig population. And, since I'm terrified of any snake I knew that there was a chance of running up on Mr No Shoulders.

So, I chose my carry guns wisely, I thought. A S&W Model 66 .357 Magnum and a Bond Arms Snake Slayer. 158 grain Hollow Points in the S&W and #6 410 rounds in the Bond. I didn't feel undergunned for anything that I might run up on.

Luckily, I never had to unholster. I did hear some pigs grunting over to my right on the way in but, they weren't close. I walked about 3/4 to a mile into the property and it looked like a prime hunting place. I sent a few pictures and got on the phone with my buddy. He liked my report and was going to call the owner and finalize the deal. He will be able to take me as his guest any time and as many times as he wants during the lease. Somehow, I feel that this is going to cause me to have to get a bolt action rifle.

Nice. I don’t hunt, but if I was going to be walking around Texas brush country where there are a log of pigs I’m thinking at the least a good lever action with 5-6 rounds minimum, or better yet and AR in some configuration. Maybe 6.8 or 300 BLK. Surely some wiser killer of bacon will chime in.

You felt safe without an Austrian gun?

Nice model 66!

3/4 of a mile. Now you wouldn't stretch that trying to impress us would you? It would take me half a day and probably a nap in the middle!
Yeah, but you're not the physical specimen that I am. Besides, it was flat and I walked slow.

I miss my 66 however I like carrying a CA 3" Bulldog in .44 SPL. First two loaded with Speer shotcapsules and next 3 Lee 240 gr TLSWC both under a dose of Unique.

Nice on the lease. I like the leather work on the Snake Slayer. And I like the classic Model 66 with the Tyler T-Grip

I typically carry a Ruger Alaskan 454 Casull. It’s mainly against a Bear (extremely rare) or coyote (even more rare during the day in the blue ridge).

We don’t have a lot of feral hogs or wild boar in my area, yet (VA). But my option would include a 10 mm Glock for more rounds to hit more if I were attacked.

You must be in the eastern part. Spent most of my time there in the Texas Hill Country around San Antonio growing up.

Yep, southeast Texas, near the Big Thicket.

My aunt and uncle used to live down there in Harlingen. Are you anywhere near that neck of the woods?
That's southwest from here and right on the border of Mexico. I'm just north of Beaumont.
