I went down to buy a gun safe. Big one. Not super huge . 75 rifles or so they say. 3 foot across or something like that. Anyway, I had them load it in the back of my truck. 700 lbs and figured it wasnt going anywhere so yes, I didnt tie it down. Dental floss probably would have held it. . Made it about 4 miles and went around a corner and it flew out the back of my truck. and thankfully landed on its back and didnt hurt anyone. It certainly could have and they and I would have been screwed. So here I am thanking God for saving me from being on the news in Rock hill with my 700 lb. safe on its back in the middle of the road blocking traffic thinking what the hell am I going to do now. Then a fire truck full of firemen pulled up behind not two minutes later and within 5 minutes I was on my way with the safe securely tied down in the back of my truck .

Man that’s crazy. Just bought one (not that big) last week but we laid it down on the trailer just in case. Glad you got it loaded back up.

Is it still functional? Did you happen to take any pics?

Intense!

I did the same thing, except it was a free chicken coop. Because it was taller than the cab of my Tacoma, the air coming across the cab was slowly pushing it out the back. I glanced up just in time to see it tumbling up the road, grenading in the process.

Good times.

One time I went cruising in my old boat down a seldom run river in February in a place I used to live where it was COLD in February. Just happened to be a 65 degree day so packed up the kids and threw them in the boat and up the river we went. Well about 10 miles up that river I hit a sand bar. Like 50 feet onto 1" of water. STUCK. No cell coverage at all. Day turned into night. No one was cruising by . We were screwed and the kids were looking like tasty morsels. . We were making an igloo out of seat cushions and I'm thinking about how I'm going to make it to shore to walk back and get hep in the morning. I had emailed my late father that day and told him we we going up that river. When my lovely wife got home from work that day and there was no word from me or the kids she did the right thing and started calling around and called my dad. My dad called the sheriff and they sent a boat out to rescue my dumb ass at 2 AM. I sent a load of Pizzas to the sheriff's dept that day. I will send Pizzas to the Rock Hill FD Tomorrow.

A few scratches on the back. Otherwise no damage. To say I got lucky would be an understatement. Got it home and my youngest son and I unloaded it without issue. No problems.

Did you just open the tailgate and dump the truck in gear and toss it out the back?:D

OK not saying this was anything I planned. Keep in mind I am an engineer and we have a bad reputation for not thinking about the repercussions of our decisions :). Anyway the thinking was to lay the safe on its back on the bed of my truck . The guy at the place I got it from suggested we put on the cardboard the safe came in so it wouldn't scratch my truck bed. I'm thinking about the coefficient of friction yada yada yada then I'm like yeah. Lay her down. To be honest I'm thinking more about how I'm going to get it out than I am the way home . My mistake. I should have tied it down.

I'm not making light of this. It was a really bad idea. This could have hurt someone. I thank God it didnt.

No, I didnt take pics. some things are over so fast you dont take pics. Didnt take pics of my first marriage either.

He said he's an engineer. You expect him to follow "common sense" laws?

Well, yeah, being a "theoretician" myself, I was trying to be kind and give an engineer the benefit of the doubt regarding being the pragmatic ones! I'm more of the "consider a spherical horse on a frictionless track" sort. :D

Worked at a lumberyard and a guy bought 20 sheets of OSB and we loaded them in a short bed pickup with a bed liner - couldn't close the tailgate. I asked if he had a strap to hold them. No.

Well, we have some in the store, those things are pretty slick. Nah, I'll take it easy, they'll be okay.

A lot of traffic going by that day and he had to wait a good 2 minutes for a break. When one came he gunned it as he turned left out of the lot.

Fanned 'em out like a deck of cards.

I meant when you finally got it home to unload it. It was already scratched. :D And I too am glad it didn't do any damage to anyone or anything. I was just messing with you about dumping it out of the truck again when you got it home.

An unbelievably low level of damage. Like it was a safe or something.

I helped my BIL carry a twin bed home from costco in a short bed Tacoma. Propped the mattress then box spring up on the cab and tied them down. When I hit just 40mph i heard *cccrrrraaakkkk*

The wind had folded that box spring in half at the strap.

There were no firefighters, i went to original mattress co and got one not made from balsa wood.

Probably software engineer!

John (electronics eng)

Glad it all worked out OK! :)

I'll bet you can only wear shoes with Velcro straps for closures!

LMAO - Did a similar thing with a brand new stove from Lowe's about 25 years ago.

Buddy borrowed another friends brand new Tacoma years ago to pick up some hard wood floors. I think it had 300 miles on it. Tacoma’s have plastic beds and they are super slick without some kind of liner. Got everything loaded up but didn’t take straps and of coarse it was long enough the tailgate had to be left open. First traffic light he dumped the entire load of hardwood floors. The weight also bent the tailgate down enough that it had to be replaced. Expensive lesson in securing a load.

I rented a Roto tiller for my garden many years ago. I was taking it back to the rental place in the trunk of my company car. I pulled out onto East Independence Blvd at Crown Point and dumped it right in the middle of Independence. Nobody would stop and help me. I scratched the crap out of the back of that car wrestling that thing back in the trunk.

Bwahahahahahaha. I bet you had to get a spatula to pry your butt off the truck seat when it happened.

I have stopped to help more than one person who dumped a load of lumber in the middle of an intersection. I am paranoid about stuff coming out of my truck and take extra precautions on securing my load. I have drilled it into my kids heads also.

When I haul my motorcycles, I put 2 straps on each side of the front end and 1 on each side of the back. When I first got the motorcycle a buddy told me that a single strap failing was quite common, but 2 failing on the same side is not very likely.

I've put boats in the water more than once without putting the plug in. Never sunk one. I know a guy that went fishing by himself. Put the boat in and tied it to the dock. Went to park his truck and trailer. Came back and the boat was sitting on the bottom!

It never ceased to amaze me when I worked at a furniture store how many people thought their bird's nest of knots was preferable to even a single ratchet strap.

My favorite method of tie-downs though had to be the Buick that pulled in one day with a couch. Four people in the car, each with one arm out the window, holding the couch to the roof. Absolute brilliance.
