I’m going on a hike with some buddies weekend after next and am going through my backpacking gear. I’d like to strap an ESEE 4 or a Mora bushcraft knife to my left shoulder strap on my backpack. Any ideas what would work best? I’m attaching some pictures for reference.

I've used a Teklok for that before as well. Set it up perpendicular to the sheath and adjust the plastic belt inserts down to grip the strap tightly.

Everybody always loads their knife as a fighting weapon, accessible for quick draw with a downward or sideways pull. However, if it's a bushcraft tool, like the Mora, then you need to be able to put it down without putting it on the ground. That means it goes right side up, preferably in the middle of your chest. A neck lanyard holding the sheath upright allows you to drop the knife into the sheath when you need both hands, and get it back quickly. Never put yer knife on the ground.

Another thought... your knife and your IFAK should be on your person, not on your backpack. If you shed your backpack for whatever reason, you want to retain your knife, IFAK and three ways of making fire.

What Mac said ^^^^^^^

Set your stuff up by levels. Level 1 is what you carry on your person if you had nothing else including knife, pistol, IFAK, fire starter, minimal food, etc. . Level 2 is generally a harness rig, level 3 is a backpack. Theory being that the faster you have to didi out of a situation the more you can shed an still have enough on your person to live a couple days. I really need to dig out all my old stuff and start posting it.:)

Thanks for all the input. I went ahead and ordered a Hill People kit bag for essentials and will try and get it setup in time for our trip. I haven't backpacked in probably 10 years. I'm really looking forward to it.

I use shock cord or Paracord and a strong cord lock can go a long way
