Moving to NC...from the Dictatorial Republic of Kanada!

First off, Welcome to America! You sound like the kind of folks that we're happy to have move to the states and become an American. Hope the immigration and move go well.

North Carolina is an interesting place. Lots of good rural folks, lots of farming, hunting and fishing, and we've got a lot of urban areas with high tech jobs too. Some of those urban areas do lean pretty far left, Chapel Hill and Asheville especially. There are a lot of good gun ranges within driving distance of Raleigh. I'm a member of DPRC in Haw River/Mebane, and there are several indoor and outdoor ranges closer to Raleigh than that. We have no shortage of gun shops in the area.

I feel like NC is one of the better states concerning gun laws. We don't have any ammo or magazine restrictions, open carry is legal, and a CCW permits aren't too troublesome to get.

I'm not sure how gun laws here work with immigration status, but I have known several folks who immigrated here who now own firearms legally. I would assume that if you could legally buy a hunting license in the US, you should be able to bring firearms with you, but someone more educated on that topic will have to weigh in on it.

Well buying a place is the only easy part. I was a realtor/landlord up here, so am able to sell off a bunch of property soon, which will just funnel into a US property, so we aren't really limited in where we can go.
I belong to 2 clubs up here, but they tend to be heavy loaded with fudds (not sure if that's a word down there, but the guys who are happy for me to hand over my ACR/XCR/AR "as long as they get to keep their bird guns". So I'm really trying to find a spot where I can set up hickock45 style (if possible).

Welcome. If you want a bit of land and be close to the airport, forget Raleigh, chapel hill and durham. I would recommend Chatham County, around Pittsboro.
CF

I looked at a listing in Pittsboro, https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/87-Baldwins-Xing-Pittsboro-NC-27312/114001427_zpid/ (I hope links are okay, some forums don't allow). We just have to be within say an hour of a major airport, 2 hours if the place is perfect, so I'll check out Chatham county too, thank a lot for that, I'm really looking at a move totally blind so this helps a lot.

To long... did not read.

Scanned for: "Bacon", "Meringue" and "BBQ"
did not find...

First post failed bigly.
You see, you just never know. I could have been posting on a forum in an area where meringue is far too french, or it's a beef belt and the locals don't take too kindly to any talk of bacon ;)
I'm finding my way around. I've never had better BBQ than tailgating at an Ohio State game, I figure the BBQ will be even better in NC, amiright?

This being the case, if your initial visa is going to be non-immigrant, even if you don't hunt if it's easy to get a Canadian hunting license and you don't already have one, get it. Possession of a previous hunting license from any US State or Canadian province grandfathers you in to get a US hunting license without the Hunter Safety course.

I have one, two of my best friends teach the courses. I don't hunt because the restrictions are insane, and it's bloody cold up here. I tell you, there's wildlife just wandering around all over the place here. I'm in the city but we have deer, coyotes, rabbits and wild turkeys literally overrunning the place, because the residents outlawed any kind of deer cull. Seriously, it's like I'm in downtown san fran or portland. We have meth heads and tent cities, but we can't cull the deer that are eating every blade of grass in the region. City people can be real stupid.

You can also find some nice places in the surrounding counties of the Charlotte airport. But you definitely don't want to move to Mecklenburg county. I know, I've lived here (Mecklenburg) for 60 years.

Greetings!

Going to try and make this as short as possible, apologies in advance :)

So we've been looking for a while one where/how to relocate ourselves and our business to the States, but the latest NZ style gun ban (based on a "mass shooting" that they have militantly been protecting any and all information about) has given us the real kick in the pants to get moving. I was sweet on Texas and Tenn, but my sister lives in Texas, and is "thrilled" that the state is turning blue (she's always been a leftist), so Texas is right out. My wife comes to NC for biotech conferences and just loves it, the places, the people, the weather, etc etc, so I started looking seriously at the state, and yeah, I gotta admit it looks pretty darned awesome.

So we have an immigration lawyer at HunterMaclean in Georgia, and while it's REALLY hard to get a green card right now, we can probably do it on an L1 visa. But as long as we can do all the correct paperwork, get signed with the IRS, and pass the entry exam with the US consulate, we're probably good to go.

So as for me, I was taught to shoot by my grandfather, who was a legit WWII drill Sargent. I've been shooting since I was about 6, have had guns literally my entire life (my "toy" gun was an old training hi point that gramps likely bought from the army, he was too straight laced to steal anything). We used to have spots we could go on our bikes and shoot, 22 long guns haning out of gunny sacks on our backs...nobody cared or called police. I've seen that attitude change over the years, with the media pushing a fear-fuelled agenda to disam those that allow themselves to be disarmed. I am currently serving my "2 year amnesty" for the crime of owning a legally licensed, purchased, registered sporting gun (or as they call it, an "assault style rifle". In fact, they're hitting me for about $4,000 worth of "registered" guns. We've got neighbors calling the snitch lines on people they don't like, screeching about how dangerous guns are, cheering this arbitrary disamnament, and I tell you, I'm done. Put it this way, imagine California suddenly took over, and brian seltzer was lord and ruler, and he was just splattering the country with all sorts of SJW nonsense...and people were cheering him on. THAT'S what it's like here. They have weed, drum circles, guys that wear twat knots and capri pants...yes there are a LOT of good solid people here, but they've all been driven out of the cities, and the cities have all the voting power. In fact, only 2 cities select the leader, Toronto and Quebec. These are the cities where they direct most "new Canadians" and they shower them with free money, free phones, free healthcare, everything they need, so long as they vote. It's insane but very effective for the left.

So we are looking to not only move out of the city, but out of this country. We are one "order in council" away from being a literal dictatorship. He used guns to set a precedent in bypassing parliament (imagine hillary won and just shut down the senate and house, and just banned guns). This is the second time in my life they have done this. I lost my AK and MP5 in '95 to a similar ban, and that's when they started registering ARs (swearing they weren't doing it to ban them...ha).

Why I joined here was to get a feel/taste for the environment. I plan to get a property with a bit of land, somewhere around Raleigh (we do need to be near the airport for work), and I want to set up a spot to shoot (right now I have to travel an hour to a gun range to even plink, and they are trying to enact sound bylaws that will outlaw gun ranges, they are really kicking us hard up here). So I'm looking for maybe advice on areas to look at/avoid, maybe realtors to contact, things to consider, etc etc. Any tips would be welcome.

Oh and I'd like to also add. When we get there, we won't be like the "new arrivals" to this country. We plan to adhere to the laws and customs of the land, proudly fly the stars and stripes (can we do that as foreigners?), etc etc. We're not looking to rock the boat, we want to embrace what you offer, and hopefully add to it. We'll be setting up an office and looking to expand the business (biotech), add to the coffers of the IRS, etc etc. We are not snotty ungrateful people (in fact, I think we're incredibly nice). My daughter is hoping to get into Duke for her masters if we can get things together (and she keeps her marks over 90), she's thrilled at the prospect (getting a masters from a Canadian University is not looked upon as well in the medical circles as getting one from American ones).

So again, sorry for this long drawn out intro, but it wasn't as easy as signing up to a forum up here (I'm on the canadiangunnutz forum). If anyone has tips please feel free to chime in or PM. We're putting a fair bit of money and effort into the move, it's not something we're taking lightly. I'm not even sure if I can own a gun down there, I'm that clueless. I have a sizable collection here, and not sure how mach/any I can transfer down there, it's really angering what they're doing to us (I've got a couple of rifles I've had a LONG time, and I think you guys know how you can get sentimental about an inanimate object that's been with you on your journey in life). I'm actually contributing a fair bit to the legal battles that have just started here, I don't want to seem like I'm just running from a fight, but there's a time when you see where a country is headed, and have to pick up and head for the last truly free country in the entire world.

Welcome!

Agreed. If you just need to be near a big airport, and not specifically RDU, a lot of the state opens up. That would include living across the border in SC (as CLT airport is ~6 miles from the border).

Ignoring all other airports, 90 minutes from either of just those two is a fairly expansive turf. GSO is another decent sized airport, but it’s about halfway between the other two, so not a lot of geography is gained unless you’re looking directly North or South from there.

CLT is ~3-5x busier than RDU, which is ~4-6x busier than GSO...based on the latest figures I see.

Welcome aboard, @High Caliber ... I have a feeling that you're going to love the South and her people. Enjoy the forum, and get used to reaching out for (and offering) assistance, no matter what the issue. (We have folks here who know everything about something, some who know lots about some things, and some who know a few things really well. (I, for one, am fully confident that I know nothing, in spite of decades of exposure to life's mysteries. :D )

Glad You found us. We are a band of misfits and malcontents. We fight among ourselves but you will not find a greater bunch of people here. There is a brotherhood among us. We carry on about a lot of stuff such as mayonnaise, nanner pudding and other things. But when the chips are down, people here step up and help others. They also step up and help support this forum. Free give aways to help drive supporting memberships. Some of us have been together since 2007-2008ish. Poke around and join in where you like. And.....

Welcome! As stated above, sounds like you’ll be a better American than most Americans!!! Wish you and your family good luck!

What does this mean...”they're hitting me for about $4,000 worth of "registered" guns”?

And quit apologizing to everyone on your post...most of us have diarrhea of the keyboard from time to time as well! :D

I have $4000 worth of AR's that they have notified me are now prohibited devices, and I have 2 years to hand in for destruction, or face 5 years mandatory prison time. They even upped the ante by including the uppers with the lowers. I've got a POF AR that I'm particularly fond of, kind of mad about that. They also claimed ownership of a few other choice pieces, but because they weren't registered, they accidentally fell into a lake. Unfortunate when that happens (resist registration of firearms at all costs!!! It DOES lead to confiscation!!!)

Chatham county is going blue fast. You may want to look in Lee county (Sanford), they are still red.

Since you're in biotech, checkout the NC biotech center in RTP. They can help you with moving your business.

Sadly, anyplace near a university is going blue.
We have associates in RTP, that was part of the decision making process. I was looking at Tennessee originally, my wife suggested NC.

We need to start monitoring what these institutions are teaching our kids. They are source of the plague. I never thought I'd see Canada turn into a socialist-hippie paradise, but here I am, and here it is...

Well it's a double edged sword. We are an international company, so we have to be in Europe and Australia at least twice a year, and unfortunately a vast majority of biotech firms are in Cali, so we have to go there (well I don't go there, my wife does, I simply refuse). Right now we're 2 hours from the closest "real" airport, so anything closer than that should work. I've had to drive 2 hours both ways in a monster blizzard to get my wife on a plane, I think I'll be fine driving through country roads and beautiful landscapes down there. (It really is a beautiful looking state you have there).

Can you bring them with you here since your 2 year deadline isn't up yet?

Welcome, Glad your joining us and for the right reasons.
Just vote properly, although it sounds like you know better than most what effect voting has on your rights. fly the stars and strips, Good luck.
I have to agree that Pittsboro area in Chatham Co, is likely a good place to start. In fact there used to be a large group of Canadians that lived/worked there. I'm not sure if they are still there or not. They owned an IT, web design co.

I used to vote for the best person I thought would be fiscally responsible with the budget. I have come to realize that they all just lie. So knowing that, I also have discovered that "classical liberal" is nothing but a past memory, and liberal=socialist=leftist=communist. I will never, as long as all other things remain constant, vote liberal. I probably won't be able to vote there for a long time (my sister only just received her full citizenship, and she married her husband around 2000), but I will support the Republican party financially. I tell you, the misinformation about Trump up here is insane. Imagine if CNN was the only "news" outlet for the entire US, and everyone blindly believed what they told them to believe. That's what it's like here. People don't mind our PM acting like a dictator, but they'll all run around saying trump tells people to drink bleach (without finding out the truth of course). It's tiring. I was happy Hillary didn't win (I knew she was a crook since the whitewater days), but was sort of indifferent on President Trump, but WOW he has won me over. I don't think any other politician could have withstood (much less defeated) the brutal onslaught he has endured at the hands of the media. The guy just keeps #winning and it gives me hope that I am making the right selection in new home. A land where a guy like that can beat the odds and become President, when the whole establishment wanted someone else. That's epic stuff right there. I don't think I'll be walking around downtown NY in a MAGA hat anytime soon, but I'm set. It's a bit weird, as here Red is liberal, but I'll figure it out lol

Also...I REALLY want an M60. No joke.

Can you bring them with you here since your 2 year deadline isn't up yet?

No, because they are prohibited devices, I'm just granted an amnesty. I couldn't even take them to a gunsmith, I can't get the paperwork to transport (you have to have documents to take "restricted" guns out of your house), and those have all been rescinded. The gun grabbers are furious about the amnesty too, they want them now. I say again, registration is the precursor to confiscation, full stop. If they know you have them, they WILL take them. Period.

....is love of mayonnaise a prerequisite?~ I'm actually more of a miracle whip guy myself
This is not good, you have much to learn grasshopper.
Welcome!
The SW side of hwy540 (Pittsboro area) might suit you, we’re 30 min from the airport and have enough dirt that we don’t see the neighbors & have a 200 yard range off the deck. We found a local realtor that really helped us out buying and selling farm/homes/land, I’ll send her info when I find her contact info.

Welcome! Not sure how importing the guns works, but as a US citizen from a bad state I made it a point to buy a house and move my stuff out of the bad state and into the new house before I even sold the old house. If you can swing it legally, get your toys out of Canuckistan a.s.a.p.

It's quite likely that it will be easier and cheaper to simply buy new. For example, I have an XCR and an ACR. I paid about $3000 (CAD) for each of them because they aren't restricted (and they of course are at the bottom of the lake, so sad), I can't imagine an ACR is worth that down there? I have a sig legion....$1600 (and they are coming for the handguns next year you mark my words). I was eyeing up a WWII GI 1911, the thing was going for $3000. Our prices are insane. A can of beer is over $2 and it doesn't come with a pole dance. I pay $70 for a case of Guinness, and a bottle of 16 year Macallan is about $120. We're actually looking at a considerable savings moving down there (even with our "FREEEEE" healthcare).

So in the end, it might just be cheaper to leave these here, hand them in to be smelted into weed bongs for the hippies (maybe I should start that as a business, the potheads would love that), and simply become one of the local gun store's best customers (they greet me like norm at cheers here lol)

Oh that would be excellent. I NEED a realtor that won't put me into a dumpster fire because he/she found out I'm not a bernie bro. We'll have to chat, this sounds like exactly what we're looking for. Are the people overall nice? Do any of them bake pies?

Check with a local gun store about shipping them here and transferring them to yourself.I know nothing of the legality but driving them across the border is probably a bad idea.

Mucho appreciado. I've been on our forum for years as well, same sort of thing EXCEPT that we don't have one common gun org to represent us. There's 4 or 5 and they fight and bicker among themselves, and we fight and argue as well, but there isn't a base cohesion, because we don't have any rights. Even if they strip you guys down to the most basics, you'd still have a working musket. We soon won't be able to pick up a rock or a pointy stick (no joke, violence of any kind makes snowflakes melt)

haha I agree!!! We aren't allowed to have weed killer here (I tell you, you have NO idea what it's like to live under a hippie-state rule), and I get all sweaty and nervous driving into michigan to get some weed-n-feed. I'm a rule follower generally, and I sure don't mess with the border guards (to be fair, most of the time the US guards are nicer than the Canadian ones. Our guys can be real dicks). I'll be looking to do everything right and above board. Not looking to be that stupid immigrant that gets graced with a US visa and then p*sses all over your laws. If I'm around like-minded people, you hopefully won't even know I'm a dirty foreigner. Hell I even have a big Bruins tattoo (sorry sorry, but yes I'm a lifelong bruins fan, really looking forward to games at PNC!!!!!!)

I just have to stop saying OOOT and ABOOOT. Oh and "eh". We really do say that alot. In Texas my sister still gets harassed and she's been trying to fit in for 20 years (well maybe not, she's a leftist and thinks everyone is a redneck).

I hope I didn't miss anyone, I think I read through the thread, this is incredible and extremely helpful, thank you all. We have the chat with the lawyers tomorrow at 11, so hopefully we can figure out our best course of action and timeline. Moreso than the guns, I need to get my rear out of here before the whole place goes communist. I wish I was kidding but the very best that could happen to Canada is that we are annexed by the States, but you're taking too damn long doing it. Ohhh imagining the squeals of terror if my neighbors found out they were now under Trump rule lolololol. I would have it as my ringtone, and maybe run it through a speaker instead of my car horn.

HA! High Caliber might be here just in time for the boogaloo.

The point of my statement about voting right. I see so many moving here from the NE US and talk about how much better it is here but vote the same way they did up north. Makes no logical sense to me.

It sounds more like your an American born in Canada to me. I know some Canadians into shooting sports and are equally pissed off.

Welcome to CFF, enjoy! One question though, why has it taken so long for you to decide to leave what sounds like a "hell hole"? By what you have said, you should have been gone long ago.:)

Preaching to the choir here. Why on EARTH would I go to the trouble, stress and expense of moving someplace lovely, just to bring with me the thing that chased me out of my original home? We get a TON of that here, we have a large community of "new Canadians" that simply hate our way of life. To be specific, things that are not liked: Bacon, Dogs, Alcohol, Loud music, and BLACK RIFLE COFFEE. I mean wtf is life without any of those things???

I've been called a redneck all my life, even though I wore a suit and led the respectable urban family life. I really just have never fit in here well since about 1990. Alas, 2008 was the closest we ever had to
Lord have mercy, get the man some sweet tea and Dukes mayo.:eek::eek:

So I see there shall be some cultural differences to absorb. I suppose I am willing to make sacrifices. :)

I have 4 kids, and a lot of my family here. Plus I live a fairly comfortable life. We don't want for anything, my health has been great, and up to now I didn't see democracy actually at risk. This feeble minded clown-man in charge may actually try and do away with democracy and elections here, and even if he doesn't, I see the groundwork. People will CHEER if the government did away with elections (as long as the liberals are in charge). When Trudeau bypassed our Charter of Rights and Freedoms to ban "scary black guns", I looked at it as setting precedent for doing something more sinister. He could easily have said "you are now property of the liberal government of Canada". There wouldn't be a damn thing anyone could do about it. Nothing. We are so spread out, and they have cleansed the cities of most men that have testosterone and/or testicles so how exactly do we fight that? They're working hard on being able to intercept messages from malcontents, meaning in order to form any kind of resistance we'd have to fire up the old teletype machines or something. You guys have a constitution that protects you as human beings. We could very easily be exactly like Chinese nationals: property of the state. I believe in freedom, and I never did think I'd seriously be thinking that this country would be free. I mean, who do I get to mount an offense? People are chronically traumatized if their pumpkin spice lattes have too much spice...if you get what I mean.

I just have to say... our heads don't really move like that, although all of our tires are indeed square. We also DO say "hey relax fella, take a load off, yer dogs must be barkin" a lot ;)

@High Caliber if you choose RTP/Chatham Co., we would be happy to call you neighbor.

BTW... There are many whiskey lovers among this group who live in this area. You would be a great fit.

Well that's darned neighborly. I'm fairly sure that's the area where we'll have to open shop, but I'm hoping to find a property where falling over an abandoned still is a legit concern... ;)
(we still need to get the blessing of the consulate and the IRS, there's a lot of hoops to jump through unfortunately)

I'm least concerned for my wife. She gets along literally with anyone. That's why she's the head of the company and I do the finances, I'm quite literally blocked from talking to almost 3/4 of our clients, as they hold, well let's just say "views contrary to mine". I've bitten my tongue so many times over the years I'm surprised I can enjoy an ice cream cone. ;)
