Mask Shamed? Your Karen Response

I was turned away from Great Clips after walking 20 minutes in the heat. My response to the girl at teh door what, "This is fking ridiculous." wasn't her fault but it came out and it came out fairly loud. I was hot and I wanted a haircut and their silly APP didn't say I needed a mask. I will wait and get a haircut someplace else that doesn't require a mask or just let my hair go until this silliness is over.

I'll give you something to work with here:

Not wearing a mask in public is somewhere in between inconsiderate and reckless. You're risking the health of anyone you interact with by not covering up your germ hole. Stop being jerks.
Sorry. No.

Business: "No, thank you." If they make it an issue, I'll leave...with my money. Their business, their choice.

Private citizen: "Please back off 6 feet and ask me again." If they do, then "Stay 6 feet away and we won't have a problem."

Police: "Am I being detained?" If they hem-haw around this "Am I being charged with something?" If I'm not being detained, "If I'm not being detained, then I'm free to go about my business, correct?"

(Keep in mind if the police are there because they were called on Wednesday amounts to trespassing, then you gotta leave.)

I was in the Bojangles drive thru last weekend. This Bojangles has an employee standing in the parking lot by the drive thru order board like Chic-fil-A does. As I was ordering, a lady pulled in behind me in a Tahoe/Suburban SUV. She was wearing a facemask and rubber gloves while driving her truck. When the Bojangles girl walked up to her window to take her order, she rolled down her window, pulled down her mask and engaged in a long back and forth with the employee. Once she got her order taken, she pulled her mask back up, rolled up her window and drove on up a bit to close the line gap. She then drove the rest of the way through the drive thru line wearing her mask and rubber gloves in her vehicle with the windows up. It cracked me up.

See, that is a classic bad argument. Your argument assumes that anyone not wearing a mask must be infected with the Chinese Bat Virus (with about a 0.3% fatality rate) and is therefore a risk to everyone else around them. From the Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments:

Now, if I'm going into Lowe's or another crowded store like that I'll put the thing on, just in case, but yesterday I had a client try to "correct" me about where is your PPE as soon as I got out of my truck. I was over 20' away from her and I was working outdoors. Uh uh.

...but I'm only a Biologist that works in the pharmaceutical industry, producing plasma serum for the treatment of SARS Cov-19.

Heh, you and me both, buddy. The "thanks for what you're doing" thing is SUPER weird to a nerd like me who's just doing all the same germophobe i've been doing for decades.

I'm gonna need a little help understanding you. My position does not require me to assume you are infected. That's an unknown for both parties. Since the science tells me asymptomatic carriers can transmit the disease this is valid and it is the crux of my argument: You can make me sick before you even know that you've been exposed. If that's changed it WILL change my view on masks.

Kool Aid, fresh batch by the door on a table with some cookies...... Oh, and while I'm thinking about it what precautions are you taking for those damned pesky meteorites?? Asking for a friend...

Every hair salon and barber requires a mask.

Private citizen : Unless they're impeding my movement, I usually don't validate strangers' opinions with a response.

Private business : They're place, they're rules. I can decide to do business with them or not. Went to Great Clips Wednesday. They had very clear sign stating they required masks be worn. Told them I didn't have mask and they happily provided one. I needed a haircut so I put the mask on and got a haircut.

Police/Gov : I'd ask to see the statute requiring me to wear one. If they can't show me one then it's "No, thank you and have a good day."

Might want to listen to what this Dr has to say about masks?

I’ve left the house every single day since Meck Co shut down...except for Memorial Day. Haven’t worn a mask, yet. Also haven’t had a single person say anything about it. :(

Well, I haven’t been wearing a mask out, but...

Nobody (with a brain) thinks the masks work 100%. Nor does anyone think 6 foot distance works 100%. The goal was NEVER to completely stop transmission of the virus. It IS going to spread through the population to whatever extent it was going to and kill some small % of the infected. The ONLY point of any of this was to slow the RATE of spread enough to keep the medical system from being overwhelmed. That has been more than accomplished.

Nursing homes should be locked down. Other elderly and those with co-morbidities should be cautious or isolate themselves depending on the risk they are willing to accept. Everybody else should get on with life.

If good (N95) masks slow the spread to 1/5 what it would have been without (just guessing), and bad masks (homemade) slow it by half, that can still slow it down. Not sure there is much point to that though. Yesterday the numbers in NC where I am were under 800 hospitalized in the entire state. So I don’t think slowing it down further particularly matters at this point. In 2 years we’ll likely be in the same place either way - same total infections and same total deaths. Better to get to herd immunity faster actually, so that elderly and vulnerable don’t have to isolate for another year or whatever it takes if we drag this out. If the local hospitals raise an alarm, I will wear a mask. Otherwise, don’t care.

It's simple, really. Your argument that anyone not wearing a mask is endangering you is a blanket statement and it does require you to assume the person is infected, when that's obviously not necessarily true. You may perceive a danger, but that doesn't mean it is real, or at least that it exists where you think it does. In principal that's no different from the gun confiscation crowd claiming they are endangered by you owning whatever firearms you choose to have, when obviously they are not. Perception does NOT equal reality, in spite of the modern day sophistry spewed about.

the ones ive seen absolutely freaking out and scared as hell screaming about lockdowns and masks are the same ones who call gun owners "paranoid" for carrying a gun

And the flip side is folks walking around with a gun but too cool to wear a mask.

To me, I use one to protect myself and the ones I care about from a threat I can see, I use the other to protect from a threat I can't see.

the lockdowns were not put in place to 'prevent' anything, it was "flatten the curve, flatten the curve" meaning EVERYONE is getting exposed, but not all at once. Now the public has been led to believe that this thing can be prevented by wearing a mask.

See also: H1N1 (hint: it never really went away) and the (lack of) response. It's still out there, but nobody here was worried even though it killed 60K people.

One Word: Clippers!

My friend RS talked me into taking the leap recently. I have some Wahl clippers I've been staring at for over a year, afraid to do it, and I took the longest "comb" and buzzed my head in all directions, just like she said, and it looks great....lol. No more WalMart visits for me! YAY!
It will save money, and lessen my stress.

Isn’t that true of most/all viruses and infectious disease? Why the heck haven’t we been ordered by our superiors to wear masks for years? Certainly we’ve all been exposed to people with all sorts of things prior to this. Why the sudden change? And what are your thoughts on the latest WHO guidelines?

To a business owner or employee I’ll be more tolerant especially when they’re required to have customers wear a mask like barbershops but to the Karens out there I’ll stick to some form of my quip of ... I was one of the first to receive my C-19 vaccination last week in Raleigh before we started the day’s House session so I am okay. The thought of a vaccine and she doesn’t know about it makes for a priceless look ... and gives you about 15 seconds to escape before she goes off on how why she should be able to get vaccinated :D.

Oh yeah ... as to wearing a mask if I am showing signs of illness ... I’d wear one if I’m seeking medical attention but otherwise if I’m sick I’m keeping my ass home away from other so I don’t spread it because staying away while sick more effective than wearing a masking and going out among others.

That dr said not one damned word about masks and I watched The View for 5 minutes. You Rickrolled me man. Not cool.
Damn you're right. They cut it out. I saw it live. Crazy Joy Behar asked him about Trump not wearing a mask. He said that if you were in his office and neither of you had on a mask that you would be exposed to the aerosols in 2 minutes. He then said if you both had cloth masks on that you would both be exposed in about 4 minutes. I didn't watch this clip before I posted it but I just watched it and it didn't have Joy asking him anything at all. The look on that crazy woman's face was priceless when he told her the mask story. Sorry.

Fair enough I'll agree. Im not sure if I am clean. I've been out and about. Can you be sure you're clean? You have to make an assumption at some point about the unknowns.
