Okay, I'll just say it - any kind of sauce that gets most of its flavor from vinegar instead of tomato, chili, spice etc is straight up disgusting.... and that for the last 100 years there is still the argument of which is better - Eastern Style or Western style NC Barbeque. I think there is a long thread already here about that too.
Actually, southern Orange County is Blue due to the university. Get north of I-40/I-85 and all the votes are Red. North and west of Hillsborough still has lots of rural acreage. But Hillsborough itself has become more liberal with all the authors, artists, musicians, etc moving there. It's still a historic small town downtown, but it's expanding outward in more subdivisions for people trying to get out of Raleigh and Chapel Hill. The great thing about the Orange/Alamance area is the easy access to I-40 east and west and I-85 north and south. 20-30 minutes to RDU/RTP on a good day. About 3 hrs to the beach or to the mountains. There's at least 6 or 10 members of the Durham Pistol and Rifle Club on this forum and I'm sure you'll get an invite to go shoot as soon as you move.
Your intro was one of the best I've ever seen on here too! Welcome to the finest gun forum on the web. We'll get you fine-tuned to all the proper Southern things you need to know after you have time to sit down and enjoy some sweet tea and hushpuppies. You'll also find out that the War of Northern Aggression is still discussed seriously around here (Cornwallis slept in the Colonial Inn in Hillsborough during the War of Independence from Britain) and that for the last 100 years there is still the argument of which is better - Eastern Style or Western style NC Barbeque. I think there is a long thread already here about that too.
In addition to giving up "oot" and "aboot", you've already been pegged as somebody who apologizes too much. Once we hear your voice, and we pick up that you say "surry" instead of "sorry" it will be a dead giveaway.
btw, if you've got some rifles you're thinking of bringing, be SURE to check barrel lengths. As I understand it, some of your common guns up there would count as regulated "short barrel rifles" down here. 16" barrel, with 26" overall length with stocks unfolded and extended is the minimum here. shotguns also require 26", but their barrels have to be 18" or longer.
There are sometimes ways to get longer barrels and get things off the regulated list, so that may be something worth looking out for.
And yeah, I understand your feelings about being in cities. I grew up in the burbs 10 miles north of detroit, lived 1 mile outside city limits while working in the city for the last decade or so (a large portion of the detroit workforce is windsorites with nexus cards), and now I have 2 tiny acres sitting up against somebody else's 40+ acres of wilderness. onward and upward until i can afford my own wildlife preserve!
Meringue or cool whip?Okay, I'll just say it - any kind of sauce that gets most of its flavor from vinegar instead of tomato, chili, spice etc is straight up disgusting.
Not sure how that works into this debate, but that's just a fact.
I don't really know how anyone could not love these guys. Oh sure I love a lab or a retriever, but get a smart GSD, and you never go back. I have always wanted a husky, but we've had small kids around forever, and Huskies, while smart, really don't obey when they don't see why they should, and sometimes accidentally rip up cats and teacup dogs (and of course there's a bunch of those around here). We back onto a big park attached to an elementary school, so I can't risk a dog that might think a kid looks delicious. That said, are there predators there that can take on an 80lb dog? We have some black bears and mountain cats here, but they're usually picked up immediately so aren't a concern. We have some coyotes that mixed with wolves, but nothing big enough to take on a full sized GSD.Sorry to tell you but I have lifted (stolen) your pics. I love me some GSD.

Weather will depend on where. We have an ocean on one end, and the highest point in the US east of the Mississippi River on the other.Oh, one thing I really should ask...how are the winters down there?!?! I can deal with cool-and-wet, but man I'm tired of freezing-with-snow. I get 2-4 months of decent weather, on a good year. We're locked inside for probably 8 months of the year (where is this global warming they kept promising us).
Oh and what about poisonous snakes? I'd worry more for the dogs than myself, I can wear sensible boots if biting critters are a concern. Also, how bad are the mosquitos?

We donāt have poisonous snakes. Not a concern.
What you need to be worried about are the venomous snakes.
CopperheadsOkay okay, I asked for that one. I actually LOL'd at that.
So do you have any non-poisonous snakes with non-round pupils? (we have a few massasauga rattlers here, but they're not common). I -think- we have some venomous water snakes, but not sure on that, as I am convinced that all lakes have bull sharks in them, there's simply no convincing me otherwise.
Copperhead bites are rarely fatal to dogs & coral snakes are both rare as hen teeth & not terribly aggressive. Never seen a rattler here & the areas you're talking about likely won't have cottonmouths.
You'll love the winters here. We usually get snow 2 or 3 times a year & then not much & gone in a few days. 6" of snow gets folks excited. Last winter was unusually mild & we only got snow once. 60*F (or warmer) & sunny days are not uncommon throughout the winter.
Yāall, all yāall, and youāuns are required. So y'all got BBQ down there do you?
also...do I have to say Y'all a lot?
Okay that's excellent! I'm doing a lot of research on the pests and risks. We have most of the things you guys have, well unless you really have gators, we don't see a lot of those up here in the frozen ponds. I'll be curious to see a fireant colony, my sister complains about fire ants and mosquitoes in texas, but she has a teeny dog, so it can't be too much of a worry. I don't think shepherds would just lie around if fireants went at em. This is excellent help, thanks for this, I know I'm asking a lot of questions.
What's funny is that right now, almost June, it's 60 deg, and will be for the next 3 days. We'll get a couple of days of 90s in july/august but that's about it. Heh, if I leave the all season readials on my F-150 I might be the only person who can drive during your "snowstorms". Well me and the guy from Alberta, they get more snow than we do most years...
So y'all got BBQ down there do you?

lol, the last one is the tricky one.All y'all is the plural. Y'all's is the singular possessive & all y'all's the plural possessive.
lol, the last one is the tricky one.
All's y'all's kids been up in the hay barn again ain't they? Y'all's gotta get e grip on them young 'uns, y'hear?
I've just gotta get a grip on the lingo
Now here's a real question...is it possible to still find any legit Popcorn Sutton shine still around? Man I've watched that documentary 3 times and man I'd love to try some of that (legalities permitted of course) from a true master. Well, unless he was plumb crazy from years of drinking moonshine, and the stuff actually tasted like swamp gas in a jar...
Welcome, High Caliber!
I have to say that reading all your posts I would not guess that you were from north of the border!
Your thoughts, feelings and views seem 100% real American! I have no doubt that you will find what you are looking for with the help from the best group of guys and gals you will ever find (here on the CFF if you were wondering). You've fit right in from your very first post and you will surely find more friends then you ever thought imaginable. I have enjoyed this entire intro post. It was just a nice read. Welcome to NC!
Yeah, another thing you don't want to do when you come here is say, "Y'all don't know how to drive in the snow". It's mostly Yankees down here now and they all say that. They are usually the ones in the ditch when we do have snow because they think they know it all. It's funny how the same 6 inches of snow up north snarls their traffic the same as it does here.Okay that's excellent! I'm doing a lot of research on the pests and risks. I do have to say though...I think TV has been lying to me all my life. I mean I'm reading the posts and there's proper spelling, grammar, good sentence structure...what gives?? I was promised Yahoos! The only thing I can figure out is maybe I've stumbled onto a nest of high functioning autistics. I tell you, Canadians are usually all smug about how 'telligent we are, but again, I think I've been lied to.

I think we may both have a similar backstory on how we end up here. Like I said there's lots of good people in Cali (we know quite a few), but unfortunately the state has a reputation. Canada has a LOT of good ole boys (and girls), but the vocal special interest groups seem to hold power. For example the big anti gun org up here only has ~2000 members at best, but they get an entire nation disarmed. Squeaky wheel gets the mayo!Yep, you were lied to. Just as myself with 50 yrs native to California.
There's some book smart, street smart and smart asses down here.
bah humbug. i spent 23 years driving in michigan winters on "all season" tires. snow never put me in a ditch.
Stupid driving put me in a ditch a few times, but only once did it happen when there was snow going on.
Ha! We sure got you fooled! We're nuthin more than barefoot, toothless, ignorant hillbillies and rednecks. Spell check has just made us appear smarter than we really are!maybe I've stumbled onto a nest of high functioning autistics.
We're gun people. of course we're smart and a little weird.Thank you!

I've never thought about that...that's actually a bit profound. I have to admit that as I think of the people that enjoy firearms, and you know what I mean, the guys and gals that really dig guns, the way they look, the machine work, the mechanics, Moses Browning's incredible masterpieces...they all are quite sharp individuals. I'm without a doubt one of the dullest knives in the drawer if you get my drift. I know a lot of guys that hunt, or that will shoot when in vegas or something, but no real interest in firearms, and they're some of the more brian stelters of the world, again if you get my drift.... very interesting. We're gun people. of course we're smart and a little weird.
I went to a carbine course at MDFI. there were 2 cops, one kid about to go into the military, and about 20 engineers and scientists. i don't think anybody was surprised by those numbers.
I new it! I news you guys were liers! Ooops, wait hole on....Dammit my spell check popped off.Ha! We sure got you fooled! We're nuthin more than barefoot, toothless, ignorant hillbillies and rednecks. Spell check has just made us appear smarter than we really are!
Except for up in the mountains, folks down here don't drive in the snow. At the first rumors of flurries, everybody heads to Wally World, wipes out the bread and milk shelves and goes home. We had about two inches here one Friday afternoon. It was completely melted within 24 hours. School had already been cancelled as soon as the forecast got fairly certain. Schools reopened on Wednesday.
As for knowing how to drive in snow, northerners do have an advantage but it is a perishable skill. Even when we have to drive in that crap six months out of the year, everyone seems to have to learn all over again with the first snowfall of the year.
One year the first snowfall was about 8-10 inches. I counted eight vehicles off the road on my way to work. Seven were 4x4 pickups and SUVs.
Thank you and LOL. Your sig probably taught me more about the forum than I could have learned in a month (well it probably did, I'm sure I'll puzzle it out)Welcome and thanks for joining up with us here. I'm hoping you'll find this to be the very best internet hangout ever and please reach out to others to join up with us here also.
And thank you for posting inside this thread so all of us can extend a welcome and get to know you !
We're SO MUCH MORE than a firearms forum !
If I saw someone off the road I'd probably just stop to help, I'd be a dick to actually laugh and keep driving.
Well that goes without saying. I mean, "if you earned it, eat it"Except for the Bozo that just passed you doing sixty in the slush. It is frowned upon to laugh and a polite wave is still expected but we do not stop for them.
