My father in law is looking to get sell his 2005 Acura TL. with 68k. He got it from his father in law when he moved into a retirement community. Two owner and been maintained at the dealership since new. They are looking to downsize to two vehicles and has offered it to me. Asked me to give him a fair lowball offer on what’s its worth.

We personally don’t need a third vehicle. I have a company vehicle and my wife had an older 4Runner. That said for a like new Acura at what I think will be a very good price I might pick it up.

Everything I’ve read online says they are solid cars. I’ve always been a Honda/Toyota guy. Since Acura is basically a higher end Honda I expect to be good to go. Anyone have or had a TL? What was your experience with it?

Great car.
The only things I can think of...
-Make sure trans fluid has been changed, and keep (or start) doing it now. It sucks that there is no easily serviceable trans filter, and Honda’s (Acura’s) maintenance schedule on newer vehicles doesn’t recommend changing fluid often enough to compensate. With regular changes it should last.
-it will need timing belt replacement at 100k, so that is an expense to plan for. But you probably already know that from other Hondas.
-valve cover gaskets will likely leak at some point, and intake manifold must be removed to get at them. So not as easy to do as some other vehicles.
-if spark plugs have not yet been changed, do it now, rather than waiting until the recommended 100k. Honda was not good back then about using the right anti-seize for aluminum heads. Waiting longer increases the chance for a seized plug. Install new plugs with anti-seize and proper torque.

My wife had a 2006 TL that she put close to 300K miles on it before we traded is for a RDX. Great car, never any issues. It does need timing belt change around 100K as mentioned.

Interestingly, when my son turned 16 a few years ago, we were looking him a good used car and I ran across another 2006 TL locally that only had about 120K on it; I purchased it for him and he drove it for about 4 years with no issues until we sold it (my wife gave him her RDX when she got another one). I only had to change the starter on it.

Great cars from the 2 that I have owned.

Thanks guys. I do know the TB hasn’t been done.

I think I might pick it up today. We had picked up a used Peloton bike for my MIL as she was going stir crazy with the gyms being closed. Anyways, they owed us $1800 for that. He texted me this morning and said let’s just call it even... talk about generous. [emoji54]

Like I said, we don’t need another car but for that price I’m getting it. Will be a good road trip vehicle. I’ll post pictures once I pick it up! Pretty excited for a 15 YO car

For that price, there is no way I would pass that up!
That is a really great deal. If you maintain it, that car should last forever, like @Took posted above

Good cars, depends on price. Hopefully your old enough to know not to pay for Acura badge.
It’s pronounced AH-Cu-Ra
Last year we opted for a loaded Camry vs a base Lexus. Pretty much the same price.

EDIT, just seen the price. Jump on it Easy 4-6k car

I just want to post that I dont want to know what a NEW one would cost lol

But good pick up on the car!

I think new they are $2400? They are commanding a premium even in the used market right now since gyms are closed and they are taking 6-8 weeks to arrive from Peloton. I don’t get it but my wife, her mother now and two sisters all have one. It’s like a cult for sure. That said she has gotten her money’s worth out of it.

Anyways I’m a little bummed but patience will have to do. My FIL can’t get to his safety deposit box until Thursday so we are going to pick it and the title up then.

Picked it up last night. Man this thing is smooth for a 15 year vehicle. Washed it today and it definitely needs a few coats of wax. I’ve always used meguiars ultimate wax but am open to suggestions if anyone has anything better?

I’ve never felt “lucky” but I do today. Timing belt was just replaced a year ago, new battery last month and tires 6 months ago. Records since new

transmission is the weak link on the TL's. There is also a sensor on gps/bluetooth equipped around the rear view mirror that will drain the battery. sold my 2005 with 65k miles on it to my dad and regret not having it in my driveway. great driving/riding car.
