I was contacted by a Wilmington employee today, wanted to know if I was interested in assisting in the removal of "several statues".... to protect the statues from damage/vandelism.
He stated that the work would be done "late night/early morning" under the watchful eye of "a heavy police presence"
He would not say which or how many statues.
He also said that they expected to "pay a heavy premium" due to the unusual working conditions.

After a brief discussion, I made it clear that I had zero interest in any of that $$.
There is NO WAY in hell that my company will be involved in this BS.

The conversation was pleasant only because he genuinely seemed upset that he was in charge of a shit show.

As of this evening, I know that 2 other local Crane companies have also declined the offer.

Such BS!!!

Rant over.

Is he expecting and riot, strife, and civil commotion on Wednesday? I have to go into Wilmington tomorrow but could reschedule if I might run into any "peaceful protests" that might be worth avoiding.

We seem to have actual "peaceful Protests" everyday at the courthouse steps.
Evenings, you see random (20-30) younger people wandering with BLM type signs.
As far as I've heard, Wilmington has only experienced a few broken windows since all of the drama started.
Stay out of the rougher areas and you'll be fine.
But, if you do find yourself in a situation, call and I'll have your back!

I'm surprised they don't want the graveyards removed too... this burns me up to destroy and history just because someone is offended.

Great renowned art museum's have what today has what would now be considered child porn portraits. People are not offended by this? I'm not offended by this century's old art ,because it was a different standard at that day and time. I don't agree with people doing this today at all, but the old stuff is water under the bridge.

Haven’t met you yet in person, but if you ever make it my way or I make it your way I’d love to buy a sandwich! Since you don’t drink beer.

Thanks. I am going to Rippy to have my Aunt's Cadillac serviced. I should be able to stay away from the rougher parts.

Rob, I'm glad you stood on principle. I figured it was coming.

I expect General Pender won't be too far behind. Though the county name might complicate things.

The wife wanted to pick up from the Copper Penny last Saturday. I agreed without thinking and broke my own rule of not getting anywhere near this mess. I rode right by the courthouse and had people waving their arms at me. Won't make that mistake again.

Honestly I’d rather you take the business.

If they are pulled down and vandalized they will never go back up. If they are removed and stored they won’t be the focus of any confrontation and may well be reinstalled at a later date. Worst case they end up in a private display vs being destroyed.

Just one man’s opinion.

JimB,
I discussed that exact thought with the GM of another crane company.
There are other large regional companies that (IMO) aren't attached to the area that may do the work.
I'm sure it will get done, just won't be me.
As I said, when it's time to dust them off and reinstall, I will donate the equipment and personnel.

Rob

It not about "being offended". Part of Marxist ideology is to remove/erase the past. Mao called it the "Four Olds":

'The Four Olds were: Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas. The campaign to destroy the Four Olds began in Beijing on August 19, 1966 (the "Red August"), shortly after the launch of the Cultural Revolution."

By the time they were done, 1.5 Million people had been killed, and 20 million had imprisoned and tortured for not being satisfactorily in step with the New Ways, clinging to the past, as it were. That's what we're dealing with, and that's why statues are coming down. Many of the people helping in the current mayhem may be offended or think they're helping make the world a better place, but make no mistake, the organizations driving and funding this have an agenda that has nothing to do with advancing the fortunes of oppressed African Americans, nothing to do with old Confederates, nothing to do with Police Brutality. It's Marxism in it's purest form, attempting an overthrow of our current system and they very well might just get away with it. George Floyd was simply a handy triggering event.

Exactly my thoughts... Im pro statue.

But, somebody is going to take them down. Let that money go to you, and you can take pride in gently protecting them...

If I was the only option for safe removal I Might consider it. But, there are plenty of good qualified operators that can do this work.
This job will get done with or without me.

I thought NC had a law on the books that prevented anyone from removing statues like this?

I think, statues can be removed for up to 90 days (think maintenance and repairs) but, once they are down, it only takes excuses to keep them down.

did it sound like he really was trying to protect the statues and had plans to put them back up somewhere else? i suppose that could be important. But honestly, statues are just statues. if the left wants to tantrum out and show what punks they are at the expense of some statues... so be it. the world needs to see.

Gov. Crapper says they are being removed for public safety, there us a provision for that in the monument law.

If you get hurt or dead from damaging monuments then that is your own fault.

Well if it's for safety, arrest their asses when they try to pull them down. There are laws on the books for vandalism already. Do your freaking job and tell the police to do the same.

Cooper, do his job?

You musta missed his tenure as Attorney General

Better to pull them down safely than let some pricks drag them down, damaging them.

But I also commend your decision brother. They dont need to come down at all, shame this is happening.
