Dad left us two large safes full of guns for my brother, me, and my sons. Problem is, as far as we can tell, the combos are in his head.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a safe cracker/locksmith in the Charlotte area? I’m told you can non-destructively drill them, rest the combo, and plug the hole.

You can. I’ve seen it done Let me see if I can get a number for you.

Dude went to prison for it. Now he sells them..

I got a homie in durham whose gotcha back dawg.

...Unfortunate about the loss of your father. Happy to hear he at least got to know his grandkids and left some freedom behind for them! All my dad left me in the firearms dept. was a crappy sterling 22lr (thank the lord he never needed to use it for self defense because it jams every 3 rounds lol) and a mossberg 500 (which I now own 3 of).

May the contents of those safes bring you and your family many years of bonding and enjoyment.

-Cheers!

Call a local locksmith and check with them. Or call Greg drake at drake safes he may be able to help.

It's fairly simple. Remove the dial. Drill a hole behind the dial thru the door and into the lock. Use a camera or a borescope to line to the wheels.

Open!

Weld up hole, replace lock.

Sure, if you know where the notches are supposed to line up. otherwise it's a fun game of subtraction and measuring degrees over and over...

Is this true? Is there somewhere to read the backstory? I didn't see it easily on the page. Hilarious if true.

It's always been the story, but I've never verified it.

I asked a relative of his and he said he did go to prison, but he doesn't remember the exact charge.

What brand are the safes? There should be a serial number located on the safe, and you should be able to call the manufacturer and provide proof that the safe is not stolen, and they can give you the original code. If it was ever changed, then this is not an option.

I would contact a locksmith who has experience with safes, if the manufacturer can't help you.

The shop that sold the safe may have the combo on file.
Don't drill it yourself, there could be a glass or diamond coated drill plate.

I’m pretty sure he had the combo changed on one of them.

Funny story: the first gun safe I ever had, I found out all about the ability to contact the manufacturer for the combo. I was playing with it in my living room when I got it home. Shut the door, closed the bolts, and turned the knob. All while the paperwork was inside.

Long story short, I didn’t get to use my new safe for like a month or more while I waited for Sentry to send me the combo. Had to provide a sworn statement that it was mine along with the serial number.

If one was changed, what would you bet that both have the same combination?

Good thought. It was changed before the second one came into the picture.

Well count that out. Did he have a desk or some place he.kept important papers? Might be time to search.

Grandpa had his written on the underside of a drawer in his desk.

We found it 3 or 4 months after paying a locksmith to open them

If you can’t find anybody to open it, and you don’t care about the safe and you just want the guns out. Get yourself a grinder with a metal cutting wheel and go through the side. The sheet rock inside the safe should absorb the sparks. But just in case one gets through and touches the carpet make sure to have a fire extinguisher nearby.

Update on my saga...

Turns out I’ve never operated a fancy safe combo dial. Apparently you have to turn the dial after the last number in the combo until the bolt disengages.

Upon learning this, both safes were accessible.

Learning opportunity.

Yep...almost like it has 4 numbers instead of 3. It just won’t let you go past the 4th one. :D
