Hey everybody new here so this might have been talk about before i did a search and nothing came up. I live in Weaverville N.C. and have been trying to figure out what kind of gun I want to leave behind the seat in my truck. I think I’ve got it narrowed down between a lever action and a short barrel 308. What I’m having trouble with is I’ve read the law on transporting firearms in N.C. and it’s not really clear on long guns I’ve got a ccp can a long gun be loaded. If it has to be unloaded then that would be a deal breaker for the lever gun. I would really want a 308 Bolt action with a detachable magazine then. Any advice or recommendations is greatly appreciated

what is a “clip fed 308”?

So the smart answer is none. Leaving a gun in your vehicle is a great way to arm a thief.

With that,
I use my handgun permit as designed, I have a G19 on me and my back up is a braced CZ Scorpion.

If you want .308win I would find a braced handgun that chambers that ammo

I vote lever gun. As far as I know you're supposed to have the ammo and gun stowed in separate places?

And yes, guns left in cars might have been alright at some point, but appears to be a bad idea nowadays.

The terms you’re looking for are:

CHP (NC issues concealed handgun permits...not CCPs)
Magazine (you're probably not buying a clip-fed .308)

The statutes don’t say anything about loaded vs unloaded as far as concealment goes.

It appears what you want is an AR-10 pistol?

Nothing wrong with using correct terminology.

you don’t go around call your boots sandals, or your truck a sedan.... so why call a magazine a clip?

Companies have 12.5” or so AR10 pistols

Sorry about the wrong terminology. I carry s&w 38 snubbed nose. It fits me great I’m just not a great shot after 25 yards it’s questionable. I was wanting a long gun preferably lever or bolt action. Something that will shoot a little further than the snuby with a little more force. I like the concept of the scout rifle but never held one so might be the most idiotic gun concept ever but in theory it seems really practical Looks weird but seems practical

In that case get a lever gun in 357 and it can shoot the 38 ammo you already have. Having a rifle and pistol in the same caliber is a great idea that goes back 100+ years.

And one can find a magazine loaded lever-action rifle. Case in point: the Henry Long Ranger that feeds a four-round detachable magazine chambered in 6.5 Cred; .308 Win; or .243 Win; and a five-round version in .223/5.56. Not that I'm suggesting that these are "recommended" truck gun calibres -- c.f. previous posts.

Tyler, welcome aboard CFF! Stop by here and tell us a bit about yourself:

There's a great crew here with a ton of help and info on every topic.
A lever 357 or 44mag lever gun would be great, I chose an inexpensive 8.5" 300BLK folding AR pistol as a truck gun.

How far can the average shooter be accurate with a 8.5 inch ar pistol

I submit that the better question to ask oneself is: "what must I do to make sure that I'm better than the 'average shooter?'" And I say that as one who needs to do a lot more work on the matter himself.

I got i good idea at some stuff that would help me become a better shooter but realistically I don’t have the time or money to do it might be the death of me thow. AR pistol sounds cool but I would not mind something with a 16 to 20 inch barrel I might b a shity shot but if you got a ar pistol 8.5 inch barrel and I got a 20 inch bolt action in the same caliber I might give u a run for your money given we have the same optics

My son shoots steel out to 100 yards with 9” barrel, a dot, and a brace on a 9mm subgun. Off-hand. No idea how it does it.

I'm ringing 6" & 10" plates at 175 yards with a red dot sight, fits in lap top bag (the pic is a tool case), can shoulder it and point left with the window up while sitting in the driver seat. Excluding the folder, I built it for $400 with Black Friday sales for the parts.
I took a large 6pt buck last season with my 10" 300BLK, he was DRT.

The problem here for the OP is that the lever gun cannot be concealed and considered accessible in the truck cabin. If he uses it as a truck gun and is pulled over he is subject to arrest for concealing a rifle.

I am a pretty avg shot and I can ring steel minute of man targets at 100 yards all day long with these braced pistols. I also have a CZ Scorpion that can do the same. If I am concentrating I can keep a mag in an 8" or 10" plate.

Call me stupid but I'll ask any how. What is your intended purpose for the weapon? Self defense? Hunting? What? That would make a big difference in a proper response. Most folks thinking self defense will be thinking capacity......... hunting folks will be thinking entiely differently. To me, neither of you offerings are what someone would expect to see for self defense.

Boy,this thread is really bring out my ignorance. I've never heard anything about a concealed long gun. I mean, I just can't see the concept. Someone please educate me, just for my knowledge.
"Is that a long gun in your pants, or are you just happy to see me?"

Thank you for asking this. I try to be realistic and in being realistic I want some thing that can do a little of everything but not great at anything The gun u grab when you don’t know what your getting in to u just know u need a gun. Basically if I need to put a cow down or pop a coyote at 200 yards or heaven forbid fight my
Way back home then clear my home when I get there

I've not seen a cow that worried me at 200 yards :D

Tyler, if you go the AR pistol route, you really need a brace on it in order to shoot accurately at longer distances. Does your truck have a toolbox in back? If so you can legally keep a rifle in it because it's not "readily accessible" to the driver or anyone in the cab.

Yes I’ve got 3 pickups all have tool boxes in the bed I guess there’s hope yet

Another dumb question. I’m not a hunter but when I was little 10 to 16 when my step dad took me deer hunting we put our rifles in plastic hard cases behind the seat was that illegal since they were concealed

Probably.

Just think about how many of us put a rifle (or twelve) in a case, lay the case in the back seat, and head to the range...

It’s one of those things that are illegal per the statutes, but there’s a wide spectrum of when it’s enforced.
