If schools do not go back

I think the whole "keeping up with the Joneses" is a marker of the down fall of society. Because it took the mother out of the home destabilizing the family nucleus.
Something changed on or around 1984, which would also coincide with entering a 3rd turning (decline) cycle that gave rise to the concept of "latch key kid" and required mom to get a job. I remember when my mother went from stay at home to having to get outside work simply because of finances and it certainly wasn't to keep up with anyone but basic needs.

Don't project your work ethic on others who are working diligently to create significant and rigorous content for online delivery. Tell you what, I have a course, two sections, you can give a try in the Fall.
LOL. I’m not bragging but I assure you any high school course is not going to scare me. I have degrees and passed 5 state licensing test only 15% or less pass. Save your time. I’ll put my credentials against yours anytime.

I would say the original keeping up with the joneses in the 50's started everything down a path leading to it. When people start buying everything it drives the prices and demand up.

Yup, that would have been the start of the post WW2, 1st turning high....

Coaches make that choice they don't have to do it. So while you bring up the coaching supplement how much does someone get paid to be a head football or Basketball coach?
The football coach suppliment is by far the highest and most do not teach but two or three classes. Some teach zero classes. Supplements are given by school and district. Some get $15,000, some get $10,000. In South Carolina football is more important than education. A coach at Dutch Fork in SC makes around $110,000 counting his NC retirement. He isn’t even teaching a single class. Just win baby.

I think "latch key kids" started way before 1984. I was a "latch key kid" in the mid '60's.

So we can go low for this exercise.
10k for a 6 month part time job.
45k for an average teacher
3k in two payments of supplements each semester
58k a year for less than 180 days of work. So they make roughly 323.00 a day at work. That's not to bad for any profession and doesn't count benefits.

So should a teacher who coaches, or a coach who teaches in some cases, still get paid for coaching if the sports aren't played?

I'm going to disagree with you. Everybody benefits from having the children educated. Someday you'll be old and infirm, and you'll be dependent on people younger than you to keep the lights on, the meds flowing, and the toilets flushing. Educating our kids as a society is a good idea.
Sorry -No not really-- I am not a socialist. I can take care of myself. I don't need any "young" people to help me in the future. ESPECIALLY young people of today! We already see what has happened with the socialist's trainng in our schools now a days! Especially ones that have been trained to be socialist and communist, spread the wealth type liberals! Its not my responsibility to educate your damn kids. Take the tax break you get "that I dont get" and use it to educate your own kids. If you want them to be communist then by all means use your money and not my tax dollars.
You cannot be a little bit communist when it serves your financial purpose. Look up narcissisms. If you are gonna be a Republician then be a Republican *** learn what that means. You cannot be a democrat sometimes when it seems to be to your benefit.

Yes!
My mother stayed at home my first 13 years, but once we moved to the US, she had to get her teacher's credentials and teach at the local high school. A minister's salary wasn't enough for the 4 of us to live on.
Things pretty much went downhill for us as a family in the 2-parents-working era!
Edit: and even with 2 incomes, we still wore "hand-me-downs".....

I don't have kids so I can't have a personal financial purpose relative to this discussion. All I do is pay and accept the expense because it's in my interest (and yours whether you realize it or not) to live among the literate in society. Want to know what it's like to live in a society where you don't pay taxes for education and illiteracy is common? Check out Afganistan or much of Africa. Kids running around without prospects for a future and dirt floors is all they have to offer where as America is the greatest country in the world. Literacy= increased GDP = increased quality of living.
I've studied psychology in college. Not quite sure why you're talking about narcissism, but I think it means something other that what you think it means.

I'm just curious, are you going to accept social security (assuming it is still an active program) when you retire? If you're legally working in the USA you're entitled to it as you've been paying into it. Will you participate in Medicare or Medicaid if you get sick or accept food benefits? You best not because you cannot be a little bit communist when it serves your financial purpose.

I will never get out of SS what I have Paid in!!! I would have rather of been in charge of my own social welfare! IF I HAD BEEN GIVEN THE CHOICE! Socialism took that choice away from me. Its clear you do not understand the concepts of the society you live in.
This country is a capitalist's society. NO comparison to the third world tribal leader countries you mentioned. But that may be were we are going if this communist system you are advocating for happens of gets any worse that it is now. I dont need food benefits, I work for a livin buddy! And I plan for my future.
Again- its not my fault nor my responsibility if somebody kids are dumb arses or if the parents are to dumb or lazy to educate them.

FYI- nar·cis·sism selfishness, involving a sense of entitlement, a lack of empathy, and a need for admiration, as characterizing a personality type. In layman's terms as related to this topic---- Wanting some else to educate and pay for their children A sense of entitle in that someone else needs to pay for something they do not deserve. A communist way to take money from one person to give it to another- to educate their children.

So you WILL be accepting your socialist handout. Just making sure that's agreed. You can justify it however you want, but socialism it is.

Capitalism is the thing that made America great, but capitalism as a concept has nothing to do with this, a discussion about school funding.

I work for a living too, sir. I've done backbreaking awful work in my life. I also have a retirement nest-egg that far exceeds anything I would expect (which is possibly nothing) from Uncle Sugar. I won't need it, but I'll take a small refund on the Ponzi scheme thievery if it's there to take.

I'm NOT advocating for anything here. Saying I support the concept of public funded schools is NOT advocating socialism. Republicans and Democrats alike have been taxing for schools since at least the 1960's.

You keep missing the whole point, perhaps it's cognitive dissonance. One last time. The national policy our our country is to take taxes to fund education for the good of society. This is no different from taking taxes to fund national defense. It's for our benefit. A rising tide raises all boats. If you can't understand that simple, basic concept then well have to agree to disagree.

By the way. I noticed you haven't paid for a membership here. This place doesn't run itself, it needs hardworking people with money to pay for memberships. You'll see I'm both a paid life member and a benefactor of the site because I appreciate the dialog, the banter, and the community the founders of the site have built here. Maybe you'll find a few nickels under the couch cushions someday and send them on to help support this site.

One last thing. I'm an American. I'm a capitalist. I'm the VP of a fledgling non-profit that's Pro-America and focused on personal responsibility. Have a look at our site https://www.fmycp.org/home . I'm nothing like the politically ignorant socialist you're inexplicably thinking I am. I'm also trying to help you understand something that's a basic fact of this society. Whether you realize it (or admit it) or not, you've benefited from a policy that expanded literacy across this nation.

Lol it's like your offended. I was just telling you why she went back to her other job like you told me your wife did school. View attachment 229377

That said a toilet paper salesman would make more than most attorneys and I said earlier my wife took a huge pay cut to stay at home with our daughter. Still doubled her salary as a teacher.

I honestly thought we had gotten into a schlong measuring contest, I was giving you a preview of what I have.

The username fits. Simpleman with simple minded arguments

Hahaha, like I haven't heard that here before!

Good Lord.

Are crap teachers using the Covid scare to their advantage to be crap employees? Absolutely.
Just like crap chemists, lab techs, IT workers, dental prosthetic techs, adult novelty retailers, surveyors, restaurant workers, and any other crap assorted employees will use any excuse to be crap, and I've cleaned up after every last one of the aforementioned crap employees, teachers included.

But there are teachers out there with a passion for what they do, and work long hours to adapt lessons to students and had their world turned upside down by this Chinavirus thing. The good ones did their best to adapt, and are using what they learned to try and continue to adapt to teach your kids. And the ass end ones did their best to shirk duties. Just like y'all's ass end coworkers and employees come up with every excuse to lay out and not do their job correctly.

I say this as someone highly critical of the public school indoctrination system and the perpetually butthurt teacher's association that can't stand even the most minimal criticism without going full blown "you teach 30 kids, blah, blah, blah", but geez, there are plenty of good teachers out there that want to do their job right now and are doing their damnedest to continue to do so in a field that just got absolutely plowed over by recent events.

Lots of good folks and likely good workers in this thread pointing fingers at each other when they could be doing something more constructive, like talking about how useless .gov city bureaucrats or Burger King employees are.

Coaches make that choice they don't have to do it. So while you bring up the coaching supplement how much does someone get paid to be a head football or Basketball coach?

Not all teachers have the choice to coach - it's written into a lot of contracts that you might have to coach something. I can think of several teachers that didnt WANT to coach, but were forced to.

I, honestly, cant say what I get paid to coach. I really dont care. I dont LIKE my sport that I coach in the fall, never played, I dont watch it in my personal life...but I love those boys and i do it for them. Would i like more money? Sure. But Im out there for the kids and so I wont complain about the pay. But the hours get hard.
My day:
Up at 445
At school at 645
School over at 3
PRACTICE DAY - practice wraps up at 530, Im home about 6:15, so about 12 hours since i left home.
GAME DAY - Home anywhere from 9-1130 getting home. Those get rough.

So, I get the above (middle of page 1?) post about time.
My spring sport I played in HS and is much easier as far as time goes and less matches

Coaching is nothing more than a part time job. I know lots of people that work till 9-10,12 or work 12 hour night shifts then go out and mow yards. So a part time job that last 3 hours a day and sometimes long during the matches still isn't bad. I'm sure your getting at least minimum wage compensation.

How do you coach a sport that you don't like, never played and don't watch? What age kids are you "coaching"? That would be like an anti gunner that hates firearms and never touched one teaching a gun safety class.

Teaching is an extremely difficult job. Until you have been there (teacher or parent) I don’t really think it is wise to comment about what should or shouldn’t be done. I am a high school CTE teacher and routinely work 70-80 weeks. I’m not complaining because I love what I do and I knew what I was getting into. But when folks make erroneous claims it’s time to speak up.

What school? An ex is out in Sanford, history teacher. She's about 27, very thin, dark hair. Holland.

Cowboy - understand that kids are in school for 180 days, not how much teachers/coaches work.
Work days are abundant. And as far as coaches - right now weve begun workouts - there is no pay for what we're doing until August 3 (IF we have sports).
So it's not as simple as 180 days is what Im getting at.

I agree.

Can you (not YOU, but someone) understand basic fundamentals of a sport? It's that simple. I learn the game, I learn the basics, some tactics, which I can crossover from a sport I DO play and enjoy (hockey) and let them have at it.

Plus, coaching is more than just a sport, it's about being a positive adult role model, someone these kids can talk to etc
Again, Im there for the boys, some great kids out there that Im glad to have gotten to know. So I keep on each year, fifth year now

Im VJ head coach, Varsity assistant, Im not alone and would have NEVER accepted had i been out there by myself.
High school, by the way.

Physical and mental resiliency is most the battle, especially with high schoolers where a very small percentage are skilled enough to play at the next level.

Yep. My wife used to hate it when I told her our kids aren’t going around the neighborhood and to our friends selling stupid crap to pay for their volleyball. I said if we can’t pay for it then they can’t play. Simple. I hate all that guilt ridden fund raising crap.

Aint it good to just blame someone else?
It's like when local 'celebrity' Fantasia blamed the school system for her illiteracy when it came out she couldnt read. Just pass the buck.

Only if you count the time the games are taking place. It's not counting all the hours we spend waiting on kid's parents to pick them up. It doesnt count giving a kid a ride home when they dont have one. Doesnt count dealing with stuff during the school day. Painting the field. Taking kids to a Saturday tournament.
Heck, last year we took our boys to a Wake Forest game, so that was my Friday night. I went home and had the head coach meet me on the way, near my house, so at least I got to go home for 40 minutes, but then Im back on the bus with them taking them to a college game, home about 10:30 when it was all over. But the kids LOVED it, and I hope we can do it again!

But that's all ok, Ive NEVER complained on here about the pay, again, Im there for the kids.
I started because they were looking for someone to help, if they couldnt get someone they would be dropping JV, so I volunteered after they asked me.
As stated, it wasnt my love of the sport, but my love of kids. I know that sports keep some of these kids working in school and AT school.
Im there for the kids

Of all the things I can be pissed about in regards to where my taxes are being spent, folks coaching youngsters (essentially just being positive male role models, something sorely missing from many a child's life) is pretty low on the list.
Pay for coaching anything but football is disgustingly low. Considering football coaches only have to worry about 11 games to schedule compared to twenty something in other sports and about 50 in wrestling. And all the other sports Coaches have 4 classes to teach compared to zero to three in PE.

Starting salaries for teachers is too low. 5 years of suffering. Starting salary for teacher should be increased $6000.00. My daughter worked in the school system up until this year. My brother-in-law as well. BIL didn’t hit a lick after three weeks into Covid. Nothing for him to do not being a teacher. Daughter’s new company contracted with Ft. Bragg kids. She did online some which is almost impossible to do. She may be doing it still. Doubt she is teaching people to speak with a mask on.

A few disconnected thoughts on some related things.

First, I don't think it's fair to say either that teachers have the hardest job or easiest job in the world. Many teachers that I know tend to seriously downplay the benefits while talking up all the challenges and the "extra hours" they have to work. Many non teachers tend to downplay the workload outside of school hours while focusing on summer break. As several others have said, it's a job that has benefits and challenges like any other job.

Second, I had three different types of education growing up. Homeschool, public school, and private school. Neither public nor private school really provide what is needed for elementary education in my opinion. The only exception might be a private school with a very narrow curriculum. Though there are plenty of public high schools that arent great, I think the majority of them can accomplish what they need to. I think homeschool in high school isnt realistic for most people. Subjects get too specialized at that point and most homeschool associations cant provide the extracurricular activities that public or private schools can offer.

Third, as I alluded to in the last paragraph, I think elementary curriculums are a joke for the most part, private or public. The goal of elementary education should be extremely competent readers with a strong foundation in english grammar and basic arithmetic. The goal should not be inspiration. History and science should be taught through reading, not as a standalone subject. I wouldn't have a problem with spanish being taught in elementary ed, as long as it's actually taught well, since you can still capitalize on the back side of the language-learning window.

Fourth, you're going to have a hard time honestly arguing that a literate and well-educated younger generation is an asset to both society and you as an individual. Poverty and crime both correlate with education and as much as I'm a proponent of personal responsibility, I dont think holding children responsible for the ignorance of their parents is just.

I'm not an expert, but this is an area in which I have done plenty of reading and observation. It's worth what you paid for it.

This is where you would expect it to be, but it shows how far public education has fallen in many areas.

I stopped at the headline.
Dont think that one union equates to all public schools.

Just so we're clear - I dont wear Red on Wednesdays, not part of any union or 'union' organization, and never missed a day of work to go to Raleigh because I thought we needed change to the system.

Agreed it does not equate to all schools. But it likely equates to all teacher’s unions and the Red For Ed crowd.

And I was not pointing a finger at you. Just a very real problem in schools across the country. Public sector unions are a huge problem. Even more so when they are destroying our education system.

It’s a larger issue nationwide due to all the public unions, pensions and corruption. Read up on public union formation and discussions during the FDR administration and during the Depression. Even a putz like FDR knew public unions were a recipe for disaster.
