I am looking at building up a 2011 for open division. I am thinking about a 40 cal. I have shot a 38 super/super comp and 9mm. I would like to try a 40 if anyone around shoots one. How well the comp works on it, the recoil. Hear you thought on it as to why a 40 and not something else.

Thanks.

If your making an open gun, then gas volume is your friend for making the comp work for you then, correct?

I know some load the .40 s&w long, and run it in barrels cut to allow it to chamber. That, along with magazines that would allow 10mm OAL to facilitate both reliable function as well as keeping the loads hot, but safe.

Truthfully, Ive always wondered why someone doesnt just run 10mm since many roll their own to begin with.... I suppose if I were to make a gaming gun I'd look at the .38 super/9x23mm type since the OAL length already fits the 1911 pattern well, and you can have a very efficient function for your comp.... and you get more capacity. And your not trying to make it run a shorter then optimal cartridge in such a "long" action.

Or Id make it in 10mm. Because it would be AWESOME.

Have you seen the cost of 10mm brass?
Makes it less awsome.

Oh yes... I know the cost of 10mm brass.

But it wouldnt make it anyless awesome. It would just be impractical.

I think in all the USPSA/3gun matches I have attended, I have seen ONE .40 open gun.
Just never seen anybody shoot anything heavier than 124gn.

Just don't see any advantage to .40. Factory ammo makes major, but doesn't make enough gas to work the comp.
Magazines hold less rounds, too, which has some importance in Open. In 3gun it would be interesting as you don't have to shoot major.

There is no good reason to shoot .40 in open if you are building a gun. I would guess the recoil would be slightly less than a Limited gun. All that said, if it is something you want to try, there is nothing stopping you. Ultimately, its going to come down to shooting skills as it always does.

Just my opinion, and I am not an expert.

edit: additionally, bullet selection seems better for 9mm/sc

Well after talking with a few people that shoot more then I do. I am going to go with a 9mm super. Load longer. Brass projectiles are readily available. I am going to look at one hopefully this week coming up.

so the wife just gave me a budget on one. We talked about it. May have to add to it a little more. Didn’t think adding mags to it. So buy new or used

Biggest thing would be mag capacity

Check out Jeff Abernathy in mt. Holly nc. Tommy guns is the name of his business he builds some awwsome open guns.

Post pics when you get it!

I fantasize often about open guns lol.

Whats the story with your frame? Did you do it yourself? It certainly looks like you have a good start.

Dang, I thought .40 would live on in competition, but sounds like that's not the case. Guess it's settling its second foot in the grave.

In limited it will, thats the only division

@falconew
Make sure to not load any stepped brass with that thing

Stepped cases have a shelf which decreases the volume within the case. It's done for a few reasons, but you want to stay away from them if you're loading spicy rounds. I've sorted tens of thousands of 9x19 and the two major culprits I've seen are "FM" and "AMMOLAND" headstamps.

damn that sucks you have to go through that. You would think it cost more to manufacture since adding more brass to the case.

More brass, but less powder (if you work the load up on a commercial level) and basically eliminates the risk of bullet setback (for a specific projectile length).

Luckily, it's not mainstream!

Also, I enjoy sorting 9 brass! I do it while watching YouTube videos in the background. I've thought about making a brass sorter, but that's low on the priority list.

They live on in Limited, which is funnest division, imo. If you have eyes, anyway. Once you get old you have to go to Geezer Optics or PCC. It's the law.
