My wife’s grandfather built this buggy in 1968 out of a 1962 Bus frame and 1966 Notchback engine. He shortened the frame a bit

Ill update this thread with pics as its a work in progress

It looks like a Type 3 engine ... 1600cc??? ... like in a Karmann Ghia or Notchback.

That’s awesome. I can’t help with the frame unfortunately. My brother has one of the fiberglass body buggies with a vw motor. It’s like driving a big go cart.

Ive founds lots of info over the past week. Thanks to everyone who chimed in Ill start a new project thread

After working on this thing for a few weeks on a few misc items, we took it for a good spin Saturday. When we got home and it sat for a few minutes I noticed a huge oil Spot on the floor. I have a good feeling the rear main is blowed out.

So 30 minutes later I had the engine out and now we’ll be waiting on parts to get here tomorrow.

@Butter , my buddy in Virginia used to keep a couple of spare engines sitting around. If his needed work, he'd take it out and put a spare in it and keep on going. As you know by now, it doesn't take long to drop the engine and put another back in.

This is awesome!!!!!!! I don't think I've seen one before. It looks like a Morgan from the front and a Tbucket in the back. Keep the photos coming and a video wouldn't hurt.

I think there is a rail guy in Greensboro. My bro burned his down and went up there for more parts and a new frame.

Love the simplicity of it, more pics, please

That’s actually a really cool idea. Ive though about building a souped up one already. Plus with no sheet metal its super easy to pull out

You wont see another. He built it with his brother in their garage. Its not the buggy that was built by VW

My buddy and I were going to the Winston Cup race at N Wiklesboro. We went to town Saturday evening to get our beer for the next day. We were coming back home and spun a bearing in his beetle. I caught a ride home and brought my truck back with a chain. We pulled it on back to his garage, swapped engines, and went on to N Wilkesboro the next morning.

Funny story here,, An automotive instructor had one of these buggies that he built out of wood, It actually looked pretty good and he called it his Woodie. This instructor liked to prank his students by messing with their cars to see If they could figure out what was wrong. One student got back at him by pulling the fuel line off the pump and plugging it with tape. Instructor left work and before the float bowls went dry it popped the fuel line off and preceded to douse his Woodie with gasoline. I hear it stalled on him and continued to crank trying to start it and it seems the gas hit something and created a fire. I saw Woodie the next day, right outside of work, was nothing but charcoal and tires. Needless to say, that instructor didn't mess with his students cars after that.

I just just remembered this from my childhood ... and damn if it he couldn’t be Shifty’s Cousin ... Schlep aka Wonderbug!
