What do I need to know about traveling to VA with a pistol?
Ive not been in a bit, and it was before their gov got all dummy-fied with his gun views, so what do I need to do/know?
Last minute trip, likely leaving in less than 24 hours from now, probably be a 36 hour trip or so

I know you want me as close to you as possible, but unless something crazy comes up with my best friend's family, Im going.
I was looking for a funny~ 10 sec clip of don't go there, that video came up in the search, I laughed & couldn't resist :p

I cannot remember if it is the law that you must disclose to LEO that you are armed, but I can tell you it is a highly respected traditional courtesy.
Generally speaking, when you have a CHP they know you are cool.

IIRC, you must notify. (It's best to do it anyway... they will appreciate it )

you do not have to notify here.

You’re fine with your NC CCW. There isn’t anything that I can think of of the top of my head that is any different than NC.

You are right, but something kept banging in the back of my head,... so I looked it up in S18.2-308.01 Virginia Code.

It says you do not have to notify, but you must present your Concealed Carry Permit with Photo ID upon request from the officer. It doesn't say if you have to present it before or after you may notify.

So, cop pulls you over and you just give him your DL. He runs it and sees you have NC CCP. Does he have the right to fine you $25 bucks for non-presentation of CCP?

It may just be semantics, but I always just handed my CCP and DL any time I was requested for ID. No biggies...

You are safe so far.

There are issues regarding some cities that are trying to limit magazine capacities. I live in a 2a sanctuary but some places did not approve of that.

Only in northern Virginia did I see some capacity limit of 20. I can’t recall which city.

I’m in SWVA

NOVA sucks as far as being a liberal stronghold, and I live in one of the worst counties for that (Loudoun) but even with all the BS they got passed that took effect on 1 July, cities and counties can make whatever “laws” they want, but it doesn’t really matter because VA has a law that basically says local governments can’t make any laws more strict that the state.

Welp doesnt look like Fredricksburg tomorrow. Maybe later this week. Maybe not.
Family stuff (his) doesnt really allow for it now. Freaking ex being a douche

You guys sure do have a lot of "experience" with law enforcement types. Misspent youth/adulthood?

This is instructive to me, just in case, so thanks. I still get excited when I have to show my permit to a gun store person!
Oh, and a person I did a gun deal with asked to see it. Other than that, I've never had to present it to anyone, may it stay that way!

I've been stopped at a couple of DUI checkpoints. No big deal. The officers thanked me and said "Good for you."

Of course, both times I was on my way home from work wearing CRSO shirt.

Would it be okay to say that this would have been so much better had you written ...

Of course, both times I was on my way home from work ^not^ wearing CRSO ^a^ shirt.

:D:p:D:p

I lived in Fredericksburg for years. I still own a home there. Your NC permit will be fine there. It has become more NOVA than it was when I lived there but it is still not Fairfax or Loudon Co yet.

One thing about notification of LEO in VA. If you have a VA permit, I am not sure about a NC permit, the officer will be notified that you have a permit as soon as they run your lic. It shows up in their system. They can also pull it up via the registration on your plates IIRC. Most of the time when I pulled over in VA I would simply give my lic and my permit because it was going to come up anyway. The one time I did not the officer returned to the car and asked if I was armed and if so where was the gun located. I told her and she said OK just leave it there and keep your hand on the wheel were I can see them. From that point on in a traffic stop situation I simply presented my permit.

Either way. Little old ladies and Apex PD have a pretty good relationship.

I hope no offense was taken. Just struck me as a funny continuance from "The officers thanked me and said "Good for you." I can delete the post, though, if you prefer.

No offense taken. All is good. I never go out in public unclothed (Pajamas, yes. Shirtless, no!).

I was probably just channeling my inner Eleanor of Aquitaine:

“I dressed my maids as Amazons and rode bare-breasted halfway to Damascus. Louis had a seizure and I damn near died of windburn, but the troops were dazzled.”

From the film The Lion in Winter.

More than five years ago, I had a truck load of Boy Scouts on a camping trip to Mt. Rogers and was heading back, still in VA, when I came across a roadside checkpoint (Sunday afternoon, don't know what they were looking for). I didn't tell the officer because I knew VA didn't require it. If it had been in NC, all the boys would have seen it and I would have to explain myself to some of the parents, probably before I got home. Glad it wasn't in NC.

Easy way around this-
Hand your license & DL with the CHP on top, saying "please notice this first".
The folks with me never caught on.

But I know- teens.
Never pay attention until you don't want them to!
