Pine Gap Trail down to Linville Gorge Trail. Hiked to the waterfall just past the river crossing. Ran into the wilderness ranger and some guys working on the trail. Steep, rugged, beautiful. Exactly how I remember the gorge.

@chiefjason , awesome pics!

I have a good friend who is an ED doc in Morganton, also big into wilderness and rescue medicine, he says they pull about 20 people a year out of there for a variety of issues. For a place that's not real 'out there,' that place is really 'out there'.

Probably the most rugged tract of land in the US east of the Mississippi. I tell folks, I'm not telling you not to go, I'm not telling you to be scared, I'm telling you that you damn well better respect that place. It will kill or hurt you in a hurry.

Forgot to add this pic. This is taken looking off the outside edge of the trail. Probably 5’ or less from the center of the trail. Probably 75-100’ to the river, straight off the ledge to the gorge floor.

Crazy, right? No one thinks about it because it is placed pretty well east of the Appalachian trail and the major chain, and it's been years since I've been there, but that place will flat out kill you.

I am so glad I hiked those trails when I was younger. The last time was 15 or so years ago and I was seriously winded when we returned to the car. There is no way I would attempt now.

Beautiful place, I haven’t been there since I was a teenager. Glad you had a enjoyable trip!

I almost feel of a cliff out there when there was ice. My buddy saved me from at least some broken bones on Babel tower trail.

It is one of my favorite places.

Spent a lot of time in the gorge growing up. I was on a 4 day trip deep in the bowels when that young couple was murdered in 1998. No cell phone for me back then so had no idea what had happened until I got home. Should make a trip back down to Babel and beyond this fall, been awhile. Nice photos!

That’s a lot of hiking. Easier way to enjoy that area is to hop on a tube and cruise down the Green river for 4 hrs. Lol

Damned jason, that's NOT a good pic to show someone that's afraid of heights!! Normally it's the fauna and flora in your pics, but oh no, you gotta show how far it is DOWN... thanks Bud....

Revisiting this thread. I really wanna go. How far are trailheads from Conover? Thinking about ditching my wife and daughters at my in-laws and taking my boys if it's not too far.

Hour-ish. Maybe 1.5 depending on where you start. If it’s on a Sat we might be able to meet you.

I have some pictures that are very similar to the ones you took. If I can find them (probably three phones ago), I’ll be sure to post them. That is a beautiful hike.
