Today I shot a match were I watched a embarrassing display of shooter decorum.
It was embarrassing to me as a shooters and to shooting sports as a whole.
It began with a procedural on a cover call and escalated from there .
After the procedural was accessed the shooter when ballistic screaming that's a bs call but I guess you gotta win somehow .at the s.o. repeatedly, though the s.o . wasn't in shooter's division. The shooter continued his tirade loudly while the s.o was running the next shooter.
Next stage the shooter received another procedural for cover.
The shooter screamed at the s.o. now you just being a Richard.
He continue to gripe and complain the rest of the match how he was the victim of bs calls and how he was shooting somewhere next month..
I was embarrassed and after the match I spoke the s.o told him I enjoyed shooting with him apologized for the shooter behavior.
It's a small local match top prize is 5.00 off the next match, there's no trophy, or million dollar prize.
If you unhappy with the way a match is going leave.
I shot like a dog today received 3 procedurals at least, but no tirades take your penalty and go on.

Some people!!!

Ignore and go on. The world is so much on edge these days, those of us with a wee bit of common sense and aplomb must keep our heads high and move on.

"Don't let crazy harsh your mellow, Man."

If it was that bad, in my opinion, he should have been DQ’ed. Most matches I’ve shot have some sportsmanship rules that allow for getting rid of the buttholes when they show themselves beyond reason. Guess he would have really lost it if they sent him packin!

Yes to this!

I am old and slow. I am in this for the fun. I am competitive but, if my scores are lower than a newbie's, I am happy because aother has accomplished a goal that might keep them in the game.

FTDR Failure to do right rule. If he has a challenge 100.00 challenge fee. Returned if upheld. Someone needed to pull him aside and failing that he would not be welcome at my range again. Anyone here remember Tim W$&@@ when he threw his 1911 over the berm at SSI in Louisburg?

I'm old and have a long memory, this shooter once got banned for the same type of behavior not from the match but the entire property. l.e. had to be called

Last time I heard of someone acting like that they became one of the very few people to be asked not to return to Battery Oaks

I shot a match with Chris Tilley (once). That arrogant kid had spectators with chairs that moved to each stage and applauded,

Thank the "match" gods I was not in his squad.

Oh wow. Reminds me of a USPSA state championship down at Ant Hill many years ago. This puffed up hot shot, Tommy Lee Cerbo, was so obnoxious on our squad that Larry Vickers told him to STFU or have his head pulled off and thrown into the woods. Everyone applauded. His father probably taught him how to behave. I got so tired of his incessant carping that I invited him, in a seriously unfriendly manner, to get in his car and go back to Florida.

Some people take the game way too seriously just to win a plastic trophy.

That name is familiar from a long time ago. Was he a tall, skinny dark haired kid and I think he as sponsored by Allen?

Nope. Short Sandy haired guy. Family owns PDHSC in Garner. He's one of the best shooters in the world. He has a pile of national and international championships and match wins. Good dude. He may come off as arrogant some but I assure you it's confidence. He's the real deal. I always found him to be pretty laid back in general and very amicable but he does take the game VERY seriously. Of course if I had his talent I would too...

LoL. That reminds me of a young guy, that used to come around the range. He wasn't loud, but definitely not humble about his skills. Everybody disliked him. Trouble was, he was really that good. Which only made it worse. :D

Is it the guy from Top Shot? Or just somebody else with the same name?

Yeah people grow up, didn't know him in his youth, it's pretty great to squad with him now, you stand to learn. If he sees you care he's encouraging, and more than willing to share/discuss stage plans, gear, whatever. He is a serious competitor, but he loves the game. Resets, takes the timer or tablet if need be. The occasional idol worshippers can be annoying but that's not really his fault and happens with high level guys in the microcosm of shooting.

Some people are just dicks. I've seen perfectly sober adults act like children and their children act like the adults. This kind of behavior never surprises me.

Also, I look at matches like I do playing hockey - Im not expecting to get anything out of it except some fun, experience, and a workout. We arent getting drafted so why get so up in arms?
Same here - you shooting at the very very top of the class every time and might score a sponsorship? No? Then move the heck on and dont take it so seriously, not like it's paying the bills

10 points added to score for flagrant or FTDR, and if he didn’t like that, 10 more. Once his head exploded I would have DQed him.

Too much of your body exposed when engaging the target.
Cover calls were the most contested thing in IDPA prior to 2017 when they changed the rules to utilize fault lines instead, but that was not a perfect solution either.

The only thing about fault lines, aside from making it harder to design stages where you are actually behind cover when engaging targets, is that if someone puts their foot over the fault-line, it’s not a hard call, and half the squad usually sees it.

This call was made on a wall that ran on the 180 with shooting stations at each end, the s o called it consistently all day, if you stuck your foot and leg out past the corner post one warning then a procedural, he went out of his way to be lenient of the shooters
From where I was standing it was a easy call to make.
I will agree the keeping up with an imaginary line running from the target
To the cover can be difficult.

These kind of people really take the fun out of fun matches. Nothing wrong with being competitive but there’s no cash on the line and everyone else is out just to have fun and get some good practice.

I avoid squading up with these people. Thankfully I’ve only encountered one when I used to shoot PHA 2 gun regularly.

The difference between confidence and arrogance is a thin line. Many a young man have a hard time figuring out the difference. It takes time and maturity.

I don't care how much experience one has, if one wants to be an asshat I will go toe-to-toe. Guys like that are dangerous, irresponsible, and give the sport a bad name.

There's a reason I don't shoot IDPA or USPSA much anymore. N-SSA doesn't suffer from that crap.

@S4f
  1. What was the reaction of the other competitors?
  2. Was this a 'regular' at that match?
Not trying to pry, just curious.
As to the reaction of the other shooters I can't speak for them

And yes the shooter is a regular

Kick his ass.

Rules like this are a problem to begin with, imo. They can be arbitrarily applied. Why I don't really like or shoot IDPA.
I'd rather the stage force me to shoot from behind cover via fault lines and cover. Cuts out any bitching/feelings about "calls" by RO's.

At any rate, in all the different matches I have shot, the people are overwhelmingly well adjusted.
I have only known Chris Tilley as an adult, but he has been a USPSA grandmaster since like 15/16. I believe he was the youngest ever in the world at the time. So, I have heard stories of some primadona behavior, and having been a young man once myself, I feel certain their must be some truth to it. I'm sure Chris would agree.

In my experience, he is super generous, cool, and funny. Even aside from shooting he is a pleasure to be around. His knowledge and coaching ability is unbelievable. Really, you don't realize how good somebody can get. He's amazing. And, when I shoot matches against pros like this, I try to never ever forget a very important thing:
They are top pros. I am a hobbyist hack. There is a difference between our approaches to this sport and I need to respect that and them at all times. Just my opinion.
