Wilford Brimley who worked his way up from movie stunt rider to an indelible character actor who brought gruff charm, and sometimes menace, to a range of films that included “Cocoon,” “The Natural” and “The Firm,” has died. He was 85.

Brimley’s manager Lynda Bensky said the actor died Saturday morning in a Utahhospital. He was on dialysis and had several medical ailments, she said.

The mustached Brimley was a familiar face for a number of roles, often playing characters like his grizzled baseball manager in “The Natural” opposite Robert Redford's bad-luck phenomenon. He also worked with Redford in “Brubaker” and “The Electric Horseman.”

No “diabeetus” jokes ... he was a good man especially when it comes to a Hollyweird today. He was a a Marine ... and actually worked as a ranch hand early in life. Strange thing he was a bodyguard for a Howard Hughes for a time also. He lead a full varied life his way ... RIP Mr. Brimley.

Great character actor. His role in the natural is one of his best

Pops was a great character ... I also liked him in Cocoon and wayback China Syndrome. He also really did a great job of Grandpa Gus in the 80’s family drama/comedy TV show Our House ...

I don't think he's done anything "hollywood" for a long time, despite having been in some films.
And I'm good with that.

RIP
Im shocked there isnt mention of his diabetes work, as Im sure he's gotten more play/screen time with that than everything else put together. At least in the last two decades or so.

Very good actor. I had heard he only would take part in movies he felt would be successful.
