Heading down next week, not sure what to expect. Saw there was a curfew and the western side of the beach was shut down pretty tight. I like fishing and crabbing down at the point at night, so that kills that.

So what's up? All the public beach access points shut down? Pieces of cars and houses in the surf? Cops riding around taking folks temperatures?

I went down to do some estimates for tree work on Monday. I was on the Main Street. They had a police car with lights flashing sitting just beyond the traffic light near the firehouse. They were stopping every vehicle going to the ocean side of the island. I was driving past, had a green light, so that’s all I can tell you. May want to call ahead to see if you need any documentation to get on the ocean side.

I've traveled oak island drive from bridge to bridge then onto Fort Caswell.
No issues.
I believe that Beach drive is where the problems were/are(?)
Sorry, I can't testify to the conditions along the ocean.

I’m down here now visiting my parents. I actually came down the day after the storm when the govern was here.

All of the beach accesses are blocked with sand. All the of the dunes are gone. They still have beach road blocked with license checks at 40 SE all the way to the point. Very weird. All the busted cars are gone but houses are still burnt up.

Me and the fam were on the beach for about 3 hours. We used 69 SE this time.

I lived on 69 SE about 30 years ago, what does that area look like?
I've only seen pics from the middle of the island.

I'm here on NE 68th. Just got down tonight, but the boat ramp and beach access near us is open.

What exactly happened?

A hurricane.

Some of the beach front is really torn up from what I can see. I have not tried to get to the worst part. You would hardly know a hurricane hit driving along Oak Island Drive. I had about 3 inches of water in my toy room downstairs and some electrical damage on my dock but little else.

When will North Carolina ever learn. Put the utilities in the dirt. Change the building codes for eastern NC. Stop allowing building directly on the coast. Take a lesson from Florida. NC is by far the hardest hit place by hurricanes but the TX and LA border is catching up.

here is one reason why:

Burying power lines costs roughly US$1 million per mile, but the geography or population density of the service area can halve this cost or triple it.
In the wake of a statewide ice storm in December 2002, the North Carolina Utilities Commission and the electric utilities explored the feasibility of burying the state’s distribution lines underground and concluded that the project would take 25 years to complete and increase electricity rates by 125 percent.
The project was never begun, as the price increase was not seen as reasonable for consumers.

Our utilities are underground. I am glad. We did sorta learn not to build hard structures, berms, and other such things right on the beach.

Haven't been up to Caswell since the church group bought all the land and shut down most of the access points.
That must have been 60+ yrs ago since the Baptists have owned that end of the island since before then. I used to own a house near the concrete pipe that doubles as a lighthouse. There has been a "guard house" at the entrance to the church camp since I can remember. They always let us enter as a guest but asked us not to get out of the car. No problem riding around and looking. I had a chlidhood friend that went to the summer church camp every year as a teen. He used to explore the old concrete fortifications and gun emplacements even though way back then they were technically off limits.
