I'm about to pull the trigger and buy a brand new 2020 Kubota MX5400 HST, front end loader, rotary cutter, and 24 foot flat bed trailer.

I'm pretty much set on this configuration...

I'm just checking to see if anyone on the forum is a NC Kubota salesman, or has recently bought a new Kubota tractor.

I have test driven and been given the following numbers...

2020 MX5400 (HST) hydrostatic transmission
$26,543

Kubota front end loader: LA1065
$5,287

Heavy Duty Rotary Cutter: RCR1872
$2496

24' heavy duty dual axle flat bed trailer
$3500

After taxes, I'm looking at about $40,000.

I plan to use the 0% financing at 60 months and put $5000 down payment...

Any recommendations? Do you know of any better deals?

Thank you!

My buddy got I think this same tractor 2019 with the full cab and AC (its cold), 6' bush hog, 5' tiller, box blade, 4&1 bucket, for around 35k ish he paid cash. He had it delivered as it would never leave the farm so it sounds close. He got it from the guy in Goldsboro. I will say when you get it, crawl all over it like a monkey with a wrench. Many hydro hoses were not tight leaked all over. I got him a walkie talkie set and we could clean up his farm pretty quickly as a team. The 4&1 bucket is nice for cleaning up downed limbs and ripping out brush. If you get the cab, do not pay for the radio from them its a standard plug you can get for $30. That is what we did for his tractor and the Kubota side-by-side he got. The dealership wanted $300

Today, I test drove an MX5400 with a full cab. It was nice... AC, Heat, CD Player, Stereo... It was really nice...

But, the salesman told me the Cab model was about $5000 more than the open model. I can't justify the extra $5k for ac and stereo.

My experience with the hydrostatic transmissions is that they are not as strong as a shuttle shift. For loader work, a shuttle shift works well.

I prefrontal the R4 industrial tread over the Ag tread for everything except pure Ag work. I also prefer the universal skid steer attachment on the loader.

if you have a day job and end up using the tractor on nights and weekends, the cab is worth it due to the more all-weather operating conditions that it offers.

When I upgraded from a 39 hp Kubota to a 65hp Kioti, I went with full cab so I wasn’t getting as sick on cold, rainy days. Plus for mowing hay and tilling, the cab will save your lungs.

ahh ok. I just remember he got forks with it as well. Neighbor sniffed him out quick and had him unload 2 pallets of wood pellets off the semi. It is pretty quick to switch between the bucket and forks.

If you plan on doing yard work etc get them to quote you the 4&1 bucket. He's lost 4 gigantic Bradford pears this past year in storms and it allowed us to grab them and tote them over to a burn pile with little cutting up.

Here is a pic of my beautiful wife test driving the same tractor... This was her first time ever driving a tractor. She LOVED IT...

On the way home, she told me all about the things she wants to do with "our" new tractor... But she agreed that we shouldn't pay an extra $5k for ac and stereo...

Thank you Scott. I really appreciate your opinions...

This tractor will come with the nicer tires, not ag tires.

And it comes with the universal, quick connect loader attachment!

But, I think HST is a must because it'll be easier for my wife to drive, and I need her buy in for big purchases like this. Hahaha!

All I can say is that (1) Kubota has a great reputation, (2) If there are a LOT of late model versions of what you like for sale used, it's a bad sign (tier IV emissions has made a lot of post 2012 or so tractors maintenance headaches, some big time, some no problem, but I personally wouldn't buy any tractor over 25hp made between 2011 and 2018. (3) TractorByNet.com is the best Compact Tractor forum, (4) A cab is all about getting out of weather and bugs (especially at night with lights) for me, I don't care about the stereo because I use Bluetooth headphones for media enjoyment and hearing protection with a tractor, turning up a stereo over engine/operation noise is just too much for me, unless I want my ears to ring all the time. I have had a bunch of tractors, both open station and cab, and they're all cab now. I'd love an open station if I was just planning to use it when it's a real nice day out.

My first tractor was open.
You can't outrun Yellow-jackets on a tractor!

I bought a Kubota with cab to keep yellow-jackets from stinging the **** out of me.
Side benefit is being comfortable while bush-hogging a field in 90+ degrees after a long day at work.
No more branches or briars knocking off my hat or glasses.
Also great while plowing snow in the winter.
Just my opinion.

Sent you a bunch of info via text. Call me tomorrow if you have questions.

First time you bush hog over a Yellowjacket nest you’ll wish you had

someone beat me to it.....lol. Once you know you never forget.

Hydrostatic has its pros and cons. Its very nice for light loader work like moving or stacking round hay and for inexperienced users to drive it. They do tend lack on power for heavier tillage type work or pushing with the loader. I have noticed the jd hydros do seem to be able to put the power to ground better than others brand hydros without the power loss but not a big deal if you are not planning on plowing or trying to push with all the time. Also a jd fan but have seen many issues out of the newer stuff so not really pushing you that way over kubota since they have a solid offering as well.

Couple things as Scott mentioned get the industrial tread tires since they are usually more puncture resistant and wear better. Other is you didnt mention it but get 4wd if a loader tractor it about doubles what you can do in a small light tractor. Even If I had to hold off currently on trailer or bush hog or get a used one I would get a cab if you are planning to mow with it alot. Yellow jackets and bumble bees suck without one and bush hogging you will find them the reduction in dust is a plus as well. Also a cab is much safer if you have any kids that may want to ride they are contained not trying to ride on a fender. Used mowers and trailers can be had fairly reasonable to pick up even later on if need be.

Call Barnes Equipment and talk to Al. I shopped dealers all over the state and they were the cheapest.

Don’t buy into package deals, the implements are often shitty, and the trailers are ALWAYS shitty. You can still make the dealer roll a package together, just design it yourself.

Cab is worth $5k, that’s not much per month. All weather and all time of day operation is a godsend.

No backhoe? Aside from bush hogging that and the front end loader are major players.

I'm not sure how much the backhoe for this particular tractor would be but for my Mahindra it was over $5K. For that money I can rent a mini excavator several times a year if needed.

I'm guessing this is a package deal similar to what we did when we bought our Mahindra. They had a "buy 3, get one free" deal on implements. Make sure they actually have the implements on the lot. We had to wait 2 months for our box blade and rotary cutter.

I second @Brandon1 about not buying implements from the dealer. Ours wanted $1900 for an auger. I got a better quality one with a 6", 8", and 12" bit for almost half that from Everything Implements.

My wife asked me, yesterday, if I wanted a backhoe... I said, "They are expensive and I don't know what we'd use it for besides digging a hole to bury a dog or a cat... We'd have to kill a cat and bury it EVERY WEEK for a year to justify the extra expense. "

You’ll retreat 2 things. 1., get the cab! You’re not just paying for the ac and radio, you’re paying for the cab and they are worth it in the long run. 2., get the shuttle shift. The Hydros are weak and the the shuttle shift isn’t that much harder to run.

This main goal is a tractor for his wife. Stick with the HST.

It's not really a "package". I shouldn't have put that in the title.

I went to the Kubota dealer, knowing I wanted a MX5400. Then we walked the lot looking at trailers and implements. We talked about levels of quality. He showed me the thinner steel on the cheaper attachments.

There was no deal. I just picked out the tractor and the best rotary cutter, and the best trailer and he wrote up the quote.

I'm not a fan of any particular make, nor do I own one, maybe soon. I have worked on most the major brands. Talk to people about your dealer, especially the parts or service dept depending on who will be doing the work.

I might even call and ask for some random part that might break or get lost and see what they say. You'll need a serial #. Tractor ain't worth much sitting a month.

This would be my biggest recommendation for a new tractor. Ask people in area about the dealer and service.

I just sold my Kubota Grand L 4760 cab hydro in favor of a larger Case IH 55A cab shuttle. I’ve been running equipment my entire life, and let me tell you the hydro is MUCH easier to run than the shuttle. The shuttle isn’t bad, but requires allot of movements and footwork to do the same job that one foot does with a hydro.

Unless you are doing heavy ground engaging tasks like plowing or chiseling, a hydro is fine and plenty strong.

Well, bad news...

I might have to put the tractor purchase on hold.

Woke up this morning, and the 23 year old home AC is not working. I walked outside and it smells like somebody was burning tires down the road. I walked around the house, and looked at my ac unit. The fan was spinning, but it stank like burning wires...

I ran in the house and turned it off.

No fire or anything, but that burning smell was bad.

If I have to spend my down payment on a new AC unit for the house, then I'll put off the tractor purchase until closer to December.

I don't have to buy a tractor this week. I just have to buy it before end of December so my tax lady can start writing it off over the next couple years.

If you go orange you can’t beat the customer service and hospitality of Pageland Farm Equipment.

Asked for Tommy. Some of the nicest people you will meet great service and process.

Better luck than I usually have! Those type issues usually find me after I have just spent the money.

Course you could just go ahead and get the cabbed tractor and then you will have AC and be comfy. I mean it is that time for it to cool off ac wont be needed much in the house rest of the year.

When I had these exact same symptoms including the burning smell on my AC several years ago, it was just a capacitor.
I hope it’s something minor like that!

I just replaced the capacitor on this AC last summer. Could it go out again, so soon?

Are you going to take the panels off to see if the burned out item is obvious?
Haha! No. I was actually planning to wait, helplessly, until an AC person gets here...

I am totally hands on except for electricity and AC stuff.

I really like the cab and AC on my Kubota. I have an open Ford that I really enjoy, but it gets so hot during the summer that my poor old body can not stand the heat riding on a hot tractor as well as it once could. I disced for several hours yesterday in the cool comfort of my cab and stayed refreshed in 90+ heat.
