223 bolt guns?

I want a .223 bolt (funny, two years ago I had nothing but ARs, and now all I buy are bolt guns). The main reason is the family goes shooting a lot, and .223 is pretty darn cheap, and easy on the shoulder.

For a low-end bolt gun, what do you think of: https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/sav...edium=AFF&utm_source=35987&rid=12&WT.tsrc=AFF

I love my Savage in 308, and I like that this gun is threaded, 24" barrel. Downside it is only 1:9 twist. There's not a lot of info on it as it is a "Cabela's Exclusive"- but it's easy to change barrels on them, so I assume that's what has been done here. The price is the driver right now- at $399, that's pretty cheap.

Opinion?

(oh, and they have 6.5CM for $399 as well, not that I want that caliber)

can’t go wrong with a 10T.

I’m scrapping this idea again for a 223 bolt gun.
Im going to be going all in on 6 ARC, dropping out of 308 and 6.5 Grendel.

I'm in the process of building a prs tac rifle in 223. If you want to take advantage of the 223 rem you will need someone to chamber the barrel with the freebore that you want. A regular 223 has a short freebore measurement. And I believe a 224 wylde chamber is around .062 thou freebore. I'm thinking of ordering a custom reamer with around .090 thou of freebore so I can basically run anything that's 75 grains and up.

A 223 running a 75 eldm at 3000 fps will give up nothing to a dasher out to 700 yards. And I believe around 9 mils of drops at 1000 with a 10 mph wind hold of 2.5 mils.

Who is doing your chambering and barrel fitting? Im starting to acquire parts for a 223 build as well.

I bought a Rem LTR in 223 a long time ago, had the barrel threaded for a can and it turned out to be one of my favorites. Shooting 69gr SHPBT with 26.2gr Varget. Rifle is superb out 600yd. Never shot anything but targets.

Posting to get this thread alive again. I'm still in the process of building my 223. I ordered a stripped action without a bolt at first and then a remington bolt. Before trueing anything I checked the primary extraction and found that it was non existent. I've trued the action and machined the mounting holes out to #8. I'm going to do the bolt this weekend. I'll be moving the handle forward to get the primary extraction like It needs to be. It's so much easier just buying an after market action lol.

Build will be:
Factory stainless 700 sa
Factory bolt
Bartlein 7.5 twist m24 barrel
Area 419 brake
Timney hit trigger single stage
Badger bottom metal
McMillan at
Bushines xrs
Ptg barrel lug.

Glad to see this mentioned

I’m shooting 77gr SMKs around 2700fps in my 20” gas gun with Varget but I was going to make a 100-500yd load with 69gr and was wondering how fast I’d be pushing them

Id also like to do a .223 bolt gun, nothing too astronomically expensive...maybe a trued R700 action with a prefit barrel in an aftermarket chassis.

Got one I bought from a forum member over on the old forum a little over 4 years ago because I wanted one. Still haven't shot it yet.

Savage Axis with a Boyd's laminated stock
22" 1-9 barrel
No Accutrigger so I put in a Timney
Bushnell 3-9 scope

I think that the 69gr Sierra is running around 2890, also shooting the 70gr Berger around the same speed with Varget. I am also thinking of building a custom rig in 223.
