We were going to get our son his first rifle this year for his birthday in October but after looking at the cost of 22 ammo, not sure that’ll happen. $0.18-$0.27 a round for normal stuff... yikes.
I wish we had stocked up on it prior to this year, but it’s a round we never really shoot much.

maybe next year will be better? Who knows.

Guy just posted 3100 rounds at just under 9c a round.

Higher than pre covid but very good for today's market. Definitely get that if you can. I have a cheap old single shot i can send you some pics of if you are interested in going that route.

I haven’t seen prices that high. Most places have it for $.10/rd. It is higher than usual (pre-Covid), for sure

Send me a PM and I will help you out at less than anything being sold on the forum currently.

If you need something for your boy to shoot PM and we'll figure something out.
Exactly. There are enough members here with enough 22LR we can help this guy get his son his first 22LR and some reasonably priced ammo.
Thanks guys, I’ll keep in touch with you both. His birthday is in October. We are probably going to get it this year but talking about holding off 1 more year.

he turns 3 this year, but has been a gun freak since birth. We have been teaching him the safety rules on making sure it’s empty before anything else, and so on. But he’s been behind a few 22’s already, and even was racking off a few rounds on a suppressed 308!!! All before 3 years old.

He’s 3 years old ... get him a nice upgradable bolt .22lr. I like the little CZ Scout ... yeah I know it’s about $400 street price but it has very good iron sights, single shot adapter (use 5 or 10 round mags later), easy safety lever operation, short kid friendly LOP on the stock (upgrade later to an adult Boyd’s stock), threaded barrel from the factory ($75 minimum savings there) and pretty dang accurate.

With a bolt gun you can run rounds like Aquila Colibrí and CCI Quiet and be pellet gun on noise level at shorter teaching distances. CCI Quiet out of a bolt rifle is a great little round for working with young kids and really any new shooter ...

Ruger American Rimfire

start with the compact stock, then move to the full-size

@AH64

I just listed some subs for 11 pennies each (if you buy the whole case.

Get that boy a rifle already. :p

What is the size difference between the compact and regular? I can’t find much, need something close to the rascal or cricket size but I don’t really like either of those and if the compact rimfire is close, that would be a better choice for sure

I have some Federal Automatch and a few others that I would sell reasonably for good cause.

Look at length of pull mainly ... a Cricket is 11.5” ... the Ruger American Compact is 12.5” w/the compact module (an extra module is $20 from Ruger to take it up to a std 13.5” LOP) ... and a CZ Scout is 12”. Weight is another little variable ... the Cricket is just a shade over 3 lbs ... the Ruger AC is 5.3 lbs ... and the CZ is 5 lbs.

The Cricket is good to start but after they grow a little it gets kinda passed by ... especially since it’s a single shot and no upgrade to stock like the other two.

I bought my daughter a Crickett Precision Rifle. It is a shooter! She loves it and can burn a target up at 50yds. I just liked it because it taught her bolt manipulation. Plus, I bought an extra Warlock II suppressor to go on it and she really smiles when she shoots it.

Look at a Savage Rascal as well. I got one for my daughter and it’s a real shooter. I don’t care for the factory sights but other than that it’s a great rifle.

May splurge a tad and get him the rimfire precision. It’s LOP is .5” shorter which will help him a little more being he’s just 3, and it looks cooler than the American. And shouldn’t be outgrowing it, ever.

We bought my stepson a cricket for his fifth Christmas. It was to long for him then and is just not fitting decent at nine.

We had the same problem with my daughters. Got them a Savage Rascal when my oldest was 5 or 6, and they could not shoulder the stock. I cut the stock to minimum legal OAL and then taped a shotgun recoil pad to it.

I got a hardwood model and cut the stock down as well. Ended up with this.

i stopped in cabelas after golf and picked up 1000 thunderbolts for 5.3 cents per round. I left 500 on the shelf for somebody...

i’m not a big 22 guys so I’m not sure how great a price that was but I figured it would give me something to plank with at a much cheaper rate than 9 mm

This ammo thing has gone completely beyond crazy to rediculously stupid. I was just looking at ammoseek to see what they listed as available and saw Exammo was offering the 1400 bucket of Remington Golden Buckets, on sale, for $399 per bucket. I've got 2 of them that will probably be here when I die but there is no way I could even consider selling them at anywhere near a price like that. $,25/round for Golden Bullets!!!!!!! Yeah, they go bang but I can buy a lot of paper bags for $400.

I have a 1000 rounds of Winchester M-22 that I would sell you for .08 a round. My rifle does not like them so much. Hit me up if you want them.
