I'm getting ready to purchase some night sights for a new pistol that I just picked up. Tell me what you like about the HD vs HD XR (extended range). These will be going on a carry gun, so the primary purpose will be close up scenarios. This alone leads me think that the standard HD would suite better, since they would have a larger front blade.

Has anyone had both, if so, let me know your experience.

Photo is my Standard HD set. The blade is wide, but the diagram posted is obnoxious. It's clear they're trying to sell something.

That said, I have no problem with fast up close shooting (inside of 10 yards) with this gun. I use it for most of my classes and it's my go to full size carry gun.
I recently had to qualify at my range for a pistol qualicication to get a key for the club indoor range. That has us shooting 20 yards. I left this gun at home and brought a Wilson Combat with target sights. At 20 yards the HD sights front blade is a little too wide for accuracy work. That's when you want the thinner blade.

Just what I was looking for. That blade doesn't look near as fat as the graphic, thanks for posting the photo.

Now, where to find a deal on them....

Don't hate on the Glock host (first Glock in 14 years of collecting carry pistols). Love the sights though! I was torn between the orange or yellow front sight. I think I like the yellow better for now. Might try an orange XR set on one of my other larger pistols to compare.

I've got the regular orange HDs on everything I can. If I had to do it over again, I would have done the XR but since they didn't exist when I started equipping everything I went for standardization over mix-n-match.

My guns all seem to want to run with a 6 o-clock hold with these sights, so them covering the target hasn't been a problem yet, but eventually I'll run into a gun that doesn't and then I'll wish I had the XRs if I have to take those fantasy 30 yard head shots.

I hope mine shoots with a 6 o clock hold as well. Did your factory sights shoot center hold, or 6 o'cock?

All 6 o'clock.

The only gun I've really, really had a problem with is my G44. That with a can on it and it's hitting 6" (literally 6") high at 12 yards. It's still high without the can, but not nearly that bad. It's the only one I've had issues with out of a G43, G34 gen 4, G26 gen 4, G19 gen 4 and G34 gen 5. I sold the G43 to a friend, who proceeded to put the HDs on other glocks as well. They're addictive.

Actually, for non-competitive non-carry guns, I don't mind the OEM sights at all.

Got a set of stock night sights on a gen3 19 that I’ve been thinking about upgrading. I love a thin front. Might be sampling the XR soon.
