I just picked up a new Microsoft Surface Pro 7 i5 8Gig RAM

Is making a backup of the system when new still a thing?

I've put my household finanaces software on it, and all my music is loaded to it, but i haven't done anything else but charge it. If I need to make a backup of it I feel like now would be the time.

Not having owned a Surface, I'm not in the know, but it would seem prudent to keep a good backup of all data files, meaning, all of your music, pictures, videos, and personal documents such as financial records on a separate storage device. Personal NASs running RAID 1 (2 disks) are popular and easily accessed via WiFi.

I have all the data backed up, but I'm not a server kind of guy. I keep the stuff on an accessory USB hard drive.
More concerned about the orignial image of the OS at this point. Seems like we used to make bootable emergency backup drives...

I say it can't hurt....kinda like changing oil every 3k miles instead of 5-7k miles....

2nd this...NAS w/ RAID is a good idea. Negligible data loss possibilities.... and accessible from wifi or remotely, if you set it up that way.

This is good for ease of access but It is a good idea to have it backed up not on the network in the case of ransomware and someone gets in and locks your network devices and computer down.

Recovery disks are all well and good, but there's something reassuring about backing up the user files on two identical external hdd's every few months.

External drives are inexpensive these days, I backup all the ancestry stuff my wife downloads each week on her W10 machine.
