My wife had never heard this, but I remember hearing it and saying it when I was growing up outside of Spartanburg. Anyone else say that?

Ive said it, so voted that...but I also think "Whats wrong with you?" when I hear it because I said it out of spite.

Older folks in the family said it when I was a kid.

I've always assumed it was a euphemism so people wouldn't have to say "I swear," which is frowned upon in some circles in the Bible Belt.

Heard it at the Salisbury show this past weekend.
That is what the reasoning was in our area.

Daddy said it all the time. He was born in Greenville, FL and raised in Jacksonville.

It's a southern thing.
Jacksonville, FL is where I was born and parents lived for a long time. My dad grew up there, and my mom spent her years in middle school on there.

Not in several years, but yes it was common. Like said above, it meant "I swear" or "Well I'll be".

Ex...... I swanny, she done rurnt (ruined) that boy!!-----in english ----- I swear, she has spoiled her son.

rurnt was another word I haven't heard in a while.

I heard my grandparents say it.

My dad had a more colorful vocabulary, so he skipped right past that.

My generation, and the two or three past mine seem to be more graphic in our euphemisms.

I never heard it in the mountains growing up. i recall it from a labor crew i worked with in Aiken, but i couldnt unnerstandem most of the time anyhow.

Very common in my family. Me, my parents, their parents.

I heard it a lot growing up but can’t remember not one person I know ever sayin’ it. I do remember it being said quite a lot on 1965-70s sitcoms. Green Acres comes to mind.

East Duplin High School in Beulaville, 1976, heard it all the time. Didn't hear it in the Navy nor after moving to the big city.

I have abait of y’all going on about “I swanny “! Now git out there and put those viddles in the buggy in the boot of they car. And bring momma’s pockybook in withch.

Translation- I have had enough you all talking about “ I swear “! Now go out and put the groceries in the shopping cart into the trunk of the car. And bring in your mother purse back in with you,

I can't like your comment because you translated to shopping cart. Buggy is the correct name for it so it doesn't need translation.

It just supports the ignorant concept people have of the south.
Those “people” can KMA, because I can swanny in French, too. And a little Swedish, if needed.

Those “people” are going to have that attitude anyway, no matter what. Spending large chunks of time in Colorado, California, Canada, Ohio, and passing through others has shown me that. Though, as here, they are concentrated in the cities.
