Took my first step yesterday into the NFA world

@ronn47 According to the American Suppressor Association, to legally purchase or possess a suppressor you must:
  1. Be at least 21 years of age to purchase a suppressor from a dealer.
  2. Be at least 18 years of age to purchase a suppressor from an individual on a Form 4 to Form 4 transfer (contingent on state laws).
  3. Be at least 18 years of age to possess a suppressor as a beneficiary of a trust or as a member of a corporation (contingent on state laws).
  4. Be a resident of the United States.
  5. Be legally eligible to purchase a firearm.
  6. Pass a BATFE background check with a typical process time of 8 to 10 months.
  7. Pay a one time $200 Transfer Tax.
  8. Reside in one of the 42 states that currently allows civilian ownership of suppressors.
I meet all those requirements. @BigWaylon can you weigh in on this?

You have to buy it from an in-state dealer. You'll have to fill out a 4473 at the time of transfer (after F4 is approved) and will have to show proof of residence.

You should check with @TARHEELSTATE since Scott has his FFL in both states.

Well that's a pisser. Even though I can purchase a long gun in NC as an SC resident with a 4473, I can't a suppressor???

Long guns only.

No receivers, handguns, or NFA items.

Buying a silencer from an out of state dealer is just as easy as buying one from a local dealer.
You pay the out of state dealer for the silencer, and select a local Class 3 dealer.
The out of state dealer will then transfer the silencer to your local Class III dealer on a Form 3 (tax free).
So, you still need to use a local dealer. The local dealer will handle your transfer on the Form 4 ($200 tax).

If you use a in state dealer, they can mail the suppressor to you or you can pick up in person.

I've pm'd Scott about doing the transfer for me. Man, they do everything they can to make this difficult, don't they.

It's really not that difficult, and those laws haven't changed in decades.

Scott can handle the trust, fingerprints, photos, and forms. It'll be easy. Lots of other options on the market though, so I'm not sure exactly what led you to that particular silencer. Buying in stock is the way to go, but he can order anything you want.

A big THANK YOU! to Scott at @TARHEELSTATE Firearms! He got me headed back in the right direction, set me up with a Rugged Obsidian 9 in 1/2x28 with an extra fixed mount in 5/8 x 24. I'll be able to run this can on my Beretta 92A1 and my AR9!
We got the Form 4 (individual) done today so hopefully I'll be getting an awesome present when my birthday rolls around in September!

Scott, I wish I'd come to you first. I WILL be coming back to do this again. (Probably something in the 556/762 range!)
