My new to me 2013 transit connect is showing some rust on the roof. I can't see it unless I'm up on a ladder which is why I've not noticed it until now.

What's the easiest way to take care of it? I can't see it, so if there was some magic "rust eater" stuff like I've seen on TV then a quick coat of matched dupli-color would at least stop the damage? Like I said, can't see it, so I'm not too worried about the aesthetic quality of the repair.

Carquest makes some stuff called Por15 I think is the name, if looks are not a problem. Be careful I have seen a number of people try and refinsh roofs by sanding and repainting only to have no roof left after a few years from not doing it right.

POR15 also has to be top coated with a UV resistant paint. POR is not UV resistant. A very popular product among Jeep owners. :D

Word of caution about POR 15 from someone that has used a lot of it. Great stuff, but must be liquid glass.
If you get it on your skin, you will wear it till it wears off.
When you open the can, suck it out with a syringe and work from a small throw away cup. It will perfectly and permanently seal the can. You will have to cut it open next time.
A little goes a long way.
Did I say don't get it on you?

The POR15 guys must not spend as much money with google to get their product into the search results, mostly what I was seeing was rustoleum.

Rustoleum makes a 'rust eating primer' and then you shoot a top coat over that. Can be done in an hour. The POR15 looks really hard core, would work well for frames or other components that are vulnerable to impacts and rusting.

I've got a really good outdoor rocking chair that needs some attention, I'll use that as a test bed to see how these things work. Now of course I have to wait until next weekend, somehow my day job always gets in the way of fun projects.

I've been told the POR stands for paint over rust and it's a good product. I've never used the paint but I did use a product they have that plastic coats the inside of a gas tank for restorations. It was a chore but worked well.

Normally I would say that if you don't remove all the rust first you will see it again.

I assume you still have to sand down enough to remove all the rust?

Or can you actually spray it on the rust and then shoot color and clear over it?

Call Ford first. Next bet is:

Do not get it on your skin!

Clean it, apply it, top coat, forget it. I used it for the frame on my early Broncos. It's just awesome stuff.

I would contact ford. It used to be the paint warranty was 5 years.

It's been in service just over 5 years, so I didn't bother. The dealership didn't even hold true to their word, so getting them to help me with this is not something I see them doing.

The frame on our farm truck is starting to show some rust, nothing serious but I can see it slowly eating it away. the POR15 stuff looks like exactly what you want to use on a frame.
