Deer down thread

You guys are busting some nice deer! And "Congrats" on the new hunters and first timers out there. Glad to see you are being successful and getting out there!!!

This is my best deer ever. I was going to post in the deer contest thread but I forgot to include the rifle so it doesn’t count. Ruger American, .243, 65 yards, Chatham County.
What part of Chatham if you don’t mind me asking. That deer looks a lot like the one I’ve been seeing on my way to work on silk hope gum springs rd.

I don't think it's the same buck; this one is off of Chatham Church Road. This is a great example of managed land vs. natural land. The 70 acres had not been touched in nearly 40 years. I hunted it in 2014, 2015, and 2016 and all I pulled off it was two little bucks, and that was probably 50 or 60 hunts. It was so thick that you couldn't shoot anywhere more than 30 yards, at least, at least not until late when the leaves were all gone. This spring, the landowner came in and thinned about half of it. He took out about half of the trees in those areas, but left some bedding areas. This buck was bedding in one of those areas, and came out around 7:20 on Friday. I have harvested this guy, another smaller buck, and a doe on the property this year. I've seen more turkey, fox, and small stuff this year than the previous three combined. I know there's other reasons, like I'm smarter about scouting, scent control, and the detrimental effects of human adrenaline on shot placement. But management does make a difference.

well I'm proud of my wife Gwen she got her biggest deer this evening sure put my 7 pointer to shame she shot this beautiful 9 pointer no more than 20 feet from her on the ground with my crossbow, just gotta repeat how proud of what a great hunter she's became.

pass the accuracy test.. put 3 rounds into a 6" bullseye @100.

You have a scary daughter. What can you say to accuracy test like that except, "Please don't be insulted".

Nice work on her part.

What target reading software are you using. I am looking for a better one.

5E1BF382-DC4B-4A40-9FE1-2FA469230612.jpeg Got this big nanny doe tonight around 5PM. Took her with a 100gr spire point from the 25-06 at about 75y. I’ll say it was nice not having to blood trail and drag an extra 50y or so like it is with the 223.

135lbs on the scale and I had to drag her 100y due to where I was hunting. I’m tired lol. Glad I had Pops there to help me clean her though.

Popped a doe this morning. This was the 9th deer I saw before 8 am. She was the only one on the right side of the fence though.

She was almost straight down under the stand. Took two bounds powered by her rear legs and adrenaline and then Pete Rosed it to her final resting place. IMG_20171227_081727.jpg

110 gr VorTX entered just left of her spine clipping top of one lung, tore half her heart out and exited through the liver.

With only a couple days left and my daughter burned out by unsuccessful buck hunts, I figured I better get back out if I wanted a "sausage" doe.

Here they come!

20171230_122949.jpg

There was something about the area they didn't like, so they decided to just wander away. I had to act quickly!

Line it up and POP! Through and through. Double lung. But, this little lady wasn't going to just lay there. She tore through the woods, putting maybe 50 to 60yds between points. She was DOT (dead over there). Lol. 300blk 187gr PNW polymer tipped subs.

No bacon egg and cheese biscuit for me this morning. It was all heart.

Thanks for the support and words of encouragement @11B CIB and @JustKeepSwimming . I couldn't have done it without you.

Popped 2 this morning. First came through just after daylight but never gave me a shot. Hit a can bleat after it went into the thicket. About 15 minutes later it was back and snorting and stomping. It stepped out from behind a tree just enough to see the chest. Shot it for a doe but it was an odd, scrubby spike. I think this is an old deer. It was standing in the root ball where a tree fell so I didn’t notice how big it was. Large body, both sides of the rack broken but small bases, and one heck of an overbite.

While I was crawling through the thicket tracking him I had 3 circle behind me and popped another small one to go with it.

Glad you got a good recipe on the subs. I ditched them after a buck took 2 shots and I couldn't put down a yote with a shot to the boiler room. But I was using lead round nose and they were just coming apart. Considering working up some Hornady ELD-X's if I try again.

First time ever. Full sweep this weekend .... got a good meat doe this evening. Was standing on the same spot I took that buck on yesterday. Just.... wow. Thankful to the powers that be.

85lbs on the hoof.

I've killed a few like that. Some old guy at the club said it's called a homer Simpson mouth. He had said he had seen quite a few being like that in halifax county. Who knows?

yes for some reason there is corn all over my shooting range by the targets.... lol

Man....there's some good deer on the ground this week. Keep up the good work fellas, and congrats @Cucamonga on your first deer! That's awesome.

FWIW alot of people complain about corn/baiting/salt whatever. Here's the thing: I have NEVER killed a big buck over corn, and honestly I haven't killed many small bucks. On my land, they only hit the corn at night but those does spread their scent all over the area and keep the area 'baited' if you will. I don't shoot deer over corn - that's for my kids to do. I hunt the trails and edges for big boys.

It's called a 'Roman Nose'

deer sometimes get that way when they're very old, like 6-7+ years old.

Some nice deer being harvested for sure. Is there a thread where we post the nicest one we've ever harvested?

My 13yo son's first ML harvest and the first when he was solo in the stand. Last year after getting his Hunters Safety Cert I put him on his own, yet still within earshot of me. He didn't get a shot at anything last year but this evening this doe walked out 40 yards to his left and met a 250 grain SST. She collapsed in place. No tracking. She's a good size deer, bigger than the first pic would make you think.

For reference my 13 year old is 6'2" and 205lbs....lol

That's why I had to get him out of a double stand with me. He's too dang big....

I know what you're thinking. "That boy has got to hunt every chance he gets. His hunting will help with the grocery bill."

Dang. I was about 5'5" when I was his age.

He does put quite a dent in the food stores on a regular basis.....

We were wrestling the other day and I slipped behind him thinking rear naked choke. I had to jump to do it. Getting to the point where I gotta kick his butt every few weeks just to show him I can.... While I can...lol

I bagged a doe tonight, not a huge one but meat in the freezer regardless. Now that I have one down I’m gonna try to be a little more patient and shoot the decent buck we’ve got on camera.

What a day!

Sat in the blind this morning. Got a late start and didn't sit down until about 7:30am. The deer were definitely moving. And by moving, I mean moving. Barely even standing in one spot for more than a minute. The couple that were standing for a bit were quickly ran off by pigs. Not being prepared to clean a pig myself and not having anyone in the area to do it for me, they got a pass. Not that it really mattered. They didn't stick around, either.

20181027_215618.jpg

I stayed until almost noon and saw 11 different deer, but none I was ready to take a shot at.

I went home and recharged and got back in the blind about 3:30. No pigs this time, but the deer were everywhere. Not at once, mind you, but just steady. One here, a couple there, then at about a quarter til 6, I had an absolute handful converge on my location.

They were on the left of me. They were on the right of me. They were in front of me. Then this guy joined the party and I lost it.

Time to check out, dude.

20181027_180630_resized.jpg

Not a huge rack, but a good deer for me at 170#.

And to top it off, I drop him off at the processor (don't judge me!) and while the guy is cutting away at the head so I can get a Euro mount done, he absolutely filets his right index finger. He finishes the task (my hero) and I toss him in the truck and take him to my house where my wife (a RN) fixes him up, coz we all know ain't no man going to the ER for a flesh wound.

The finger is secured and we're heading back to his shop where we almost wreck because some dude two cars up hit a buck that was crossing the highway, directly in front of the local airport!

I was hoping to have a good night's sleep, but I think I still have a slight adrenaline thing going on here. Lol....
