Share your survival bags of any type and feel free to chime in with tips on how others can improve theirs.

Mine is more of a GHB designed around getting home from work on foot if need be and/or surviving 2 nights in the woods. I've tested it on an overnighter and was quite happy

REI 40L pack plus dry sack w/clothing, 20.7lb [IMG2=JSON]{"data-align":"none","data-size":"full","src":"http:\/\/i764.photobucket.com\/albums\/xx282\/jaston87\/Guns\/83A19B9C-1E4A-441B-B579-395AA68ED9E7_zpsjblxlvwz.jpg"}[/IMG2]

1L water
Sawyer mini, syringe, pouch + empty water bottle
Nalgene w/ Ti spork, GSI poly spoon, and oatmeal packets inside (need to add some nuts/trailmix)
2 mountain house meals (4 servings for me)
Oilcamp cup + DIY lid made from a Planters nuts can bottom

sleep/shelter [IMG2=JSON]{"data-align":"none","data-size":"full","height":"483","width":"644","src":"http:\/\/i764.photobucket.com\/albums\/xx282\/jaston87\/Guns\/D1CBE102-7279-4AF9-A861-ABF4595275D9_zps3fizcmkx.jpg"}[/IMG2]

Snugpak jungle bag
SOL escape thermal bivvy (reflective tyvek, not the 1 time use plastic type)
9x9 silnylon tarp w/ guy lines
3x7Tyvek ground sheet
5x5 fleece blanket

clothing [IMG2=JSON]{"data-align":"none","data-size":"full","height":"482","width":"643","src":"http:\/\/i764.photobucket.com\/albums\/xx282\/jaston87\/Guns\/11EF3099-18F0-4BAC-9A79-F7F72840F653_zpsasytcj1o.jpg"}[/IMG2]

Lightweight hiking pants, dryfit long sleeve, wool socks + poly blend socks, sneaks (usual in business casual wear)
Fleece jacket, packable rain jacket, plastic poncho, dry sack

FAK/tools/misc [IMG2=JSON]{"data-align":"none","data-size":"full","height":"491","width":"654","src":"http:\/\/i764.photobucket.com\/albums\/xx282\/jaston87\/Guns\/F8F8903A-949C-4523-A5FC-16AD2DF6F5DF_zpshy5q03co.jpg"}[/IMG2]

FAK (modified), fire kit in tin (3 fire methods), compass, flashlight
Gloves, winter hat
Morakniv, hatchet
Misc bag of emergency blanket, CR123s, lightload towel, hi-viz mason line

Notes & self-critiquing:
I know I need to add some more food, something along the lines of nuts, trailmix, or jerky to fit inside my Nalgene and supplement my main meals which require heated water. Frankly, I could ditch the compass and hatchet along with the 2nd emergency blanket (1 in FAK, 1 in misc bag). The fleece jacket isn't very compressible, but it is warm and it serves the purpose. The fleece blanket is rather bulky but is a "luxury item" since I hate being cold. I could probably swap out my water for some Dasani bottles and ditch the empty bottle since then I'll have 2 bottles compatible with the Sawyer.

Let me know what you guys think.

I'm going camping tomorrow. I promise you a full post of my GHB and my BOB when I get back, though, and since you seem interesteed in such... I have some questions for you. When I'm not insomniac and drinking heavily to make myself sleep to have SOME energy for tomorrow. 4 hour sleep hike.. GO!

What FAK do you have & what did you add/remove for modifications? Thanks for the post!

Anyone have any 3V Gear bags? Just heard about them and am on their email list now. Big 3 day bag for $69.99. Looks decent, but wondered if anyone has actually touched one. I have a coupon code for 50% stock items. So limited colors but, for about $35 hard to go wrong. Smaller bags available too.

It's the AMK .9 as pictured which is actually pretty decent, comes with a nice water proof bag, pretty lightweight, under $30, and the contents are in 2 heavy duty ziplock type bags. I added a tourniquet, some other basic meds, small roll of gauze, some large gauze pads, a roll of decent medical tape, a few more bandaids, and an emergency blanket. I believe that's it. I have one of these in my GHB and one in my backpacking/camping bag.

I don't have any pics of mine but will try to get some posted.

Just FYI, you can use your FSA if you have one to get some pretty good First Aid kits at fsastore.com. We picked up several there for each vehicle and such.

As stated in my self-critiquing... I swapped out my 2 0.5L water bottles for 2 1L Aquafina bottles. This accomplishes the obvious of doubling my water on hand, but also allows me to ditch the empty 0.5L bottle and gives me 2 1L bottles to use for my Sawyer mini should the pouch fail and/or I need more filtering capacity. Also feels better having real bottles not those paper thin things.

I also swapped my bright green mason line for #36 tarred bank line which is stronger, holds knots MUCH better, can be untwisted and used for tinder, is almost as strong as 550 cord and is only $20/470ft. I actually bought some braided as well as twisted and will stick with the twisted for the sake of being able to untwist if need be. It doesn't untwist itself at all and no need to burn the ends like mason line or 550 cord. For most things, I've found 550 cord to be overkill.

I'm finally off tomorrow. Had a busy week. Apparently, I'm a mean person, and a bad manager. Anyways, hold me to it. Tomorrow, I shall display the, cough, greatness that is my BOB, and my WIP GHB. I would like some input on the GHB though.

Alright. Finally. Though, a disclaimer, I'm still working on this a bit. My wife gets into "let me just stuff this somewhere" mode sometimes, and I'm still gathering back my outdoor supplies from various nooks, crannies, and closets. Also, the picture, lighting, and setup suck, so apologies.

Also Included, Emergency Blanket, and a bag liner that's optional.

[IMG2=JSON]{"data-align":"none","data-size":"full","src":"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/685\/31968488743_c183925813_k.jpg"}[/IMG2] - Gerber Axe, Katadyn Pocket Microfilter, Jetboil system (Firestarters inside container), Stormproof matches and stormproof lighter, Rayovac Lantern, and a Platypus 3 Liter Water Bladder.

32402445210_e1160a076e_k.jpg
- Ruger 10/22 Takedown + Scope, and a waterproof cover for the pack.

32629318882_b63bcd9efb_k.jpg
- The Pack, which is an Osprey Xenith pack. Chosen because it's one of the few "non-tactical" backpacks with good capacity, and organizational pockets. Two on the back, two on the top, and two pockets on the waistbelt.

Well, that's it. The food isn't pictured because I'm currently rebuilding it. I tried some of it on some recent outings to see about ease of use, how much energy I felt I got from it, and how practical it was. Glad I did, learned some lessons I'd rather not learn "in the moment."

Nice, I like it! Still have a lot of work to do on mine, thus far. Still trying to "feel" out how much space/weight wiggle room I'll have too!

If you have a FSA/HSA card you can get AMK products at the HSA store.

https://hsastore.com/

AMK are top-notch, top-shelf products. I have used many (most) IFAKs and tactical medical kits, and the non-tactical variety for camping, but AMK is always my go-to.

Speaking of FSA/HSA...I understand you can use the card at Chinook Medical as well.

To prove that I, at least, HAVE a bag lol

More to come, I'll do a load out HOPEFULLY tonight

London Bridge Trading Medic bag (I can not remember the exact name of the bag, Medic 3-day pack or something)

[IMG2=JSON]{"data-align":"none","data-size":"full","src":"http:\/\/i1320.photobucket.com\/albums\/u540\/garrettxowens\/Mobile%20Uploads\/20170211_081801_zpsufv7ik6s.jpg"}[/IMG2]

Ok, here is what I have so far. Even as I was photographing things I started modding the set up a little. Taking some things out, making it slightly lighter (ie, I dont need 100' of paracord, so got that down to about 25', yes, I know that's minimal weight change, but there were several things like that)

Anyway, please critique!!!

This is a bag that Ive set up for a GHB, keep it in the car and its more for getting stuck somewhere and needing to walk 20 miles or so home.
Most days Im less than 20 miles from home, once a week Im about 40 miles.
First started this after a snow three years ago and seeing people in ATL stuck on the highway for 18+ hours.

So on the bottom of the bag is a pouch that fits MRE packages perfectly. I know this is a company that makes things for our servicemen (several on here have menitioned getting LBT stuff issued), so Im assuming this is what this part was meant for.

Putting the bag upright again and opening the front, small pouch and you'll find a few pockets inside, here is what I have in there (and things were moved about as I did this, so it might not be 100% at this point)

Two regular sharpies, a fine tip sharpie, and a ball point pen. Not pictured is a small paper journal on the back of this.

This is my, modest, FAK set up. Since this pic I added some latex gloves, removed the antibacterial wipes (put them in a different tin).
I know its light duty, but I also have a more thorough kit in the car, which I'll photograph in the next couple days.

Have a rain poncho, and a few spare batteries

Some leather gloves (deerskin), a book which will entertain me as well as maybe teach me something should something arise, a Brita filtered bottle, toothbrush, and a Camelbak bladder in a LBT carrier. I think its 100oz.

Getting to the main compartment (and I didnt take pics of how its set up inside, lots of organization!) and here is what we find.
A bike tube repair kit.
Silcock/4 way key to access water on industrial buildings
Tinder, weatherproof matches, and a magnesium firestarter
Paracord (mentioned earlier, i got it down to 25')

Old mil-surp pouch houses an Esbit stove with fuel tabs

Ive added to this pouch since the pic, but I have some of the accessory packets from a MRE to give me TP, candy, more matches, seasonings, and some drink pouches too.

Another small tin carries a button compass, mini sewing kit, and one of those cheap 11-in-1 tools

NOT PICTURED
Fenix E11 AA flashlight
Leatherman Wingman multitool

I'll add to this, I'll take stuff out.
I'll weigh it later.
Again, critique away, what do you suggest?

Only lets you do 10 pics per, so here is the last pic I wanted to add

Ace bandage and some water purifying tabs

And one last additional comment, I plan to go through this soon and put the smaller items that are currently sort of 'loose' in there into small pouches and tins to organize better.

HMP Nicely put together kit. I like the LBT bag. Seems like you have your bases covered pretty well for the intended purpose.

A couple critiques/notes/questions:
Purell wipes - I had the same in my bag but learned that they dry out in about 12-18mo.
Esbit stove - had one of those as well until I tested it out and learned that there was a reason REI had them on clearance for $3. Performance wasn't great when boiling an oilcamp cup of water, plus the tabs made my pack smell like fish. I love the firebox nano.
Why the bike tube patch kit?
You reminded me I need to get that 4-way water key, have one on my Amazon wishlist
For cutting weight/bulk on cordage, consider 325 cord or bank line. I'll post a comparison pic tonight of tomorrow.
I see you have the Leatherman, no consideration for a dedicated blade? I always have a folder on me but Moraknivs are so cheap I throw one in every bag.
Probably a good idea to at least add an extra pair of socks if you have a 20mi hike

Here is a comparison shot of 550 cord, 325 cord, braided #36 bank line, twisted #36 bank line (didn't have an extra piece of the bright green mason line)

550 cord is certainly strong, versatile, and proven, but is overkill for most tasks, in my experience. I really like 325 cord for its size and similarities to 550. Bank line has 350lb breaking strength, holds knots slightly better than paracord due to the tar coating and FAR better than the bright green mason line I had in my bag. I've since switched over to twisted bank line for my bags, but will of course keep paracord around the house.

Catahoula #36 twisted bank line, 1lb spool ~470ft $19.22
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0068IQFCA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I like the bank line option too. I've also got some 1.8mm zing-it in my EDC man purse of sorts. It's wrapped around some fire bees at the bottom of this pic.

Yes...but havent put it in the bag yet.
I do have a metal bottle that stays in the car, but I bought some camp cups/pots last year and just forgot to put them in. I'll update soon.

Are you covered on extra clothing / shelter?

No, Ive not added any extras.
I do keep a sleeping bag in the car during colder months and have a mil-surp rain jacket in the car too.

Suggestions?

Bike tube kit - I figure if I have to get home that I would like any means possible. I picked that up for about a buck or so on clearance at walmart a while back, I figured for how small it was that it might make a good addition should I come across 2-wheeled transport on the way home.
Again, this is pretty much a last resort bag.

Those 4 way keys are cheap, about a buck or so more if you buy local...still cheap.

I do have a Mora...but I cant find it now. I know, Im an idiot. Its here somewhere, but with the move and all things got shuffled up a bit

Seems like several have mentioned extra clothing - something I'll need to work on. Thank you!

Extra socks at a minimum. Wet feet leads to raw feet and you won't be walking anywhere after the skin is gone. I have 2 pair of smart wool socks and 2 pair of exfollio undies (wash one, wear one).

I'll look into some socks to add to the kit, as well as a pair of clean undies... and a small, travel-size GoldBond
Hot days and a lot of walking can get uncomfortable...QUICK.

Please, keep the suggestions coming.
Critique, help.

Anyone keep extra ammo in their bag?
And, if so, ever thought of keeping a little extra ammo in calibers that you arent carrying?

Maybe this is too far fetched, and I do enjoy a certain genre of books that makes my imagination run wild, but things like Going Home have a man walking a long distance - what if you come across a weapon but no ammo for it. Something like a handful of 9mm and/or 45 wouldnt weigh too much (though,if walking a long distance, the weight will affect you).

Again, I think Im thinking too TV/Movie like.

Now that I tore my pouch apart I realized how low on certain things it was an it's time to restock. Have seen TP or baby wipes posted much, takes up little space and does weigh anything, also worth it. Lol

I have three MRE packs of TP - I figure its dang near invaluable lol
Baby wipes are great, and usually keep some in other bags that I keep with me

I typically have at least one other bag in the car for day-to-day stuff, which will have some overlap of the GHB
I keep at least one water bottle in the car at all times
Basic FAK in each bag
More things to amuse me/keep me entertained if I am stuck somewhere - ipod, phone (with chargers and powerbank), book(s), magazines etc
Usually some snacks of some sort

ALWAYS have a multitool on me

I'll post some of my other bags with what is in them later, nothing like the GHB I posted, but you'll be able to see Ive put a little thought into what I carry at all times.
