I think it is some Springfield variant, but I don’t know and can’t find one that looks just like it. There appears to be missing parts on the rear of the bolt. Safety maybe?

Arisaka...type 38 or 99...look them up and compare the images. Along the right side of the receiver in front of the serial number you may find some characters that help ID the factory.

Japanese Arisaka Type 38. Appears to be missing the firing pin, firing pin spring, and safety.

Japanese Type 38, missing the safety. Probably missing the firing pin and spring as well.

But he has the dust cover! So that's a win.

Thanks for the help. Now to find the replacement parts.
I have the firing pin. Need the spring and safety.

If you could post the serial number and the receiver markings.

there are many series of Japanese rifles and as the parts from one series to another do not interchange.

I found a safety knob for sale over on Gunboards.com classifieds when I needed to buy one last year. Be aware there are several types and even if you buy the correct one it may require fitting.

The design of these bolts is terrible IMO. It's very easy to turn something just so at the wrong time and lock the whole thing up and/or send spring loaded parts flying.

Mum is not ground off or defaced, which is a big plus.....It's in nice condition too. Tell us how you acquired it. It is chambered for the 6.5 x 5o Japanese cartridge - also labeled as 6.5 Jap. You can find it at gunshows for around $40 a box of 20.

Possibly the bolt guts were removed by a parent to keep inquisitive kids from causing harm with it.

This rifle belongs to a friend, who asked me if I could fix it for him. He is not a gun person. This rifle was a gift to his wife from a relative that served in WW II and is a family heirloom. I am just trying to help him restore it to working condition.

Update.
Ordered a safety knob and firing pin spring fron Sarco. Wow, fast shipping and reasonable price, $55 to my door for both. 10 minutes to watch you tube video, 1 minute to assemble bolt. We now have what appears to be a functioning Arisaka type 38!
Now I cant find any ammo local. Anyone know where I can get some 6.5 Jap without ordering on line?

Where are you in NC? 6.5 Jap is findable, but you won't find it just anywhere. Most gun shows will have at least one dealer who stocks it. I also know of a shop or two that usually have it.

There is a place called ACME Bullet Company in Mebane that makes batches of Jap ammo periodically. I have bought some of his 7.7 Jap before. He may make the 6.5 too. It might be worth calling and asking. Graf and Sons has PCI 6.5 Jap in stock for $28.99 a box (+ $7 flat fee shipping). That is not bad pricing, but be careful as PCI load quality can be absolute sh*t sometimes. With their ammo I have seen lots of squibs, out of spec (too long/too short), primers in backwards, etc. Just be careful and inspect it VERY carefully before shooting it.
