Concealed carry renewal experiences

When I was in Indiana, I laminated mine. I didn't know you weren't supposed to. That piece of paper wouldn't have lasted long without some kind of protection.
I don't know if this is state wide but the Orange County Sheriff's office laminated mine for free. I understand they do that for all of them.

I went down for my renewal "appointment" on the 7th. The paperwork that you have to fill out on line asked for SSN but said it was optional. Went to the appointment and the woman said she said she needs my SSN. I told her that it said optional but she said fill it out. I told her I would rather not and see looked at my file and the SSN was there so she wrote it on the form. Pissed me off, but if I complained they would probably deny it.

Cabarrus county. What a waste of time the appointment is.

Filled out the online paper work and printed it. Appt next Thursday downtown.

I live in Wake County and my permit expires at the end of April. I'll keep you posted on the time line.

Did receive a reminder in the mail a few weeks ago. Have heard some people didn't.

Keep in mind that your current CHP will still be honored (in NC only) after it's expiration date, as the system will show you have applied for renewal. But it cannot be used for purchases.

Trying to renew my husbands ccw. We moved to Mecklenburg county. There are no appointments available and it only goes 3 weeks out. You can’t even submit an application or pay for renewal when there are no appointments available. Literally ridiculous

As of today they've had my renewal a month and a half after I submitted the application and it still hasn't even been assigned to a processor.

In Haywood County, where my FIL lives, it's a month wait to get an appointment with the sheriff's office to submit your CHP certificate and get fingerprinted.

As of today they've had my renewal 2 months after I submitted the application and it still hasn't even been assigned to a processor. I'm really doubting it will be ready at the three month mark she told me when I dropped it off.

I picked up mine last week. Took a total of 6 weeks in Cabarrus Co.

Buncombe renewal, last spring. Complete application and pay online. Appointment at the sheriff's office was two days out. I think I could have gone the next day, but I had plans so I chose 2 days out. Everything completed at the sheriff's office and out the door within 10 - 15 minutes of arriving.

Wake County

Submitted online 1/23
In office appointment Feb 1
Current status
3/7 accepted, but not assigned to a processor

Got a message on my phone that my CHP is ready for pickup Monday. About 90 days from when I dropped off the paperwork and 2 days after it expired. I'm going down today to pick it up and it should be interesting to see the actual issue date.

I’ll guess 10-15 days before you got a call...if it’s anything like mine was.

Minimum 5 to 7 days because it was dated when printed in Raleigh so handling time from there to Meck means a few days at least. Adding more days based on the reputation of Meck Sheriff’s BS (especially new guy McFarter) the I’d add another 10 to 14 so ... my guess is 15 to 21 days.

Well, we're all wrong it was issued on 3-21-2019 two days before it expired. And it only took them 4 days to call me on the 25th. I'm kind of shocked myself since my original CHP was issued two weeks before I picked it up and no one even called me. I happened to be there picking up a purchase permit and asked about it because I wanted to buy a gun. The lady went into the back and came out with my file and there it was in the folder. Of course I had already paid for the PP so I was out that money. Also they must have known when I applied for the PP the CHP was sitting there waiting for me.

Being nosy ...
What was your previous CHP’s issue date? Expiration date?
You said your new one was issued 3/21/19 ... does it expire on the 3/21/24?

Another thought ... I really wish they’d have them expire like DL’s on our b-day so it would be a little easier to remember.

Yes, the new one expires on 3/21/2024. My prior was issued on 3/23/14 and expired on 3/23/2019.

I received my renewed permit today in the mail. I was at the Wake county office on Feb 14.

Was kind of surpised when my wife got the mail and said you have something from the Wake County Sheriffs Office.

Cleveland County was simple and straightforward.
Showed up with no appoimtment on Apr 23. Filled out, turned in renewal paperwork, and paid. In and out in ~15 min. They said allow 30 days to process before I start blowing up the phones lol.
They called May 13 (yesterday). 20 days to process.
Went this morning, reviewed info on it, signed it, lil Lady laminated it, and I was out in 6-7 minutes.
I wish everyone has my no hassle experience :)

Took my renewal paperwork to Rockingham County week before last. Already had it filled out, but they go through it line by line to make sure no mistakes. Walked in, clerk helped me immediately, paid my $75:mad: and was out of there in about 15 mins. Just waiting on the call from Sam Page to pick it up. They keep a folder right in the office of all Concealed Carry holders in the county. So they just pulled my old paperwork and put my renewal in the folder. Have to give credit to Sam Page and Rockingham County, 2A friendly.

I moved from Gaston County to Cleveland a few years ago. I was *slightly* concerned there would be hiccups with my process, but no, amazingly there wasn't.
Gaston transferred my folder, Cleveland made sure my original certificate and DD214s were still in there, and dropped in my renewal paperwork.
Pretty 2a friendly around here, too.

I went down to change my address on my CHP yesterday since I've moved. A pretty easy process with only having to have a new drivers license with the address you moved to, and one change of address form. I expected them to issue a new CHP but what they do is just laminate a little change of address card and that's what you carry with your original CHP. I was in and out in about 20 minutes. Just on a side note you do have to go through a metal detector with two Sheriff's officers working the machine.

I guess they give special treatment to Glock owners. :p

New Sheriff in Davidson County NC as of last election...Richie Simmons.

I just got mine renewed. 25 days from submitting forms to getting new permit.

Not bad! Fastest renewal that I remember it ever being in 24 years.

One exception...when I first applied for my concealed carry permit in 1995 I received it That Day. Handwritten Temporary Carry Permit was issued then and was valid until the real deal arrived. Gerald Hege was Sheriff.

Unrelated to here, but I got the renewal notice for my out-of-state AZ permit. They included the form. I filled it out, included payment and sent it in. New permit showed up in the mail about 2 weeks after I mailed out the form. I guess since you don't need a permit as resident they want to make it easy for us out-of-staters to keep paying and keeping the money rolling in.

Why do I have one? Same reason I have one for NV and ID. I'm a CCW permit taking tourist. :)

There aren't any non-resident permits besides Minnesota that "expand" the states you carry in correct? And Minnesota only expands to include Minnesota....

Renewing in Wake county. Have appointment tomorrow. We will see if new sheriff tries to make me take another course...
Unless your current one is expired you do not have to take the class again.

I think I picked up 1 state with one of the permits, but can't remember which one off hand. Maybe I've kept Virginia? :)

Otherwise they're just novelties (and knowing the local laws of course).

I did my NC CHP renewal online this month, but still needed to take printed documents to the Sheriff's office, sign them, show my existing permit and ID. So really the online thing is just to offer payment and initially fill out the forms.
The clerk said "We'll call you in 4-6 weeks, bye" so I don't know if I have to go back and pick it up or if it'll be mailed to me.
Kind of a pain in the @$$ just to retain my God given rights.

Do those permits cover any states that the NC permit does not?

So far this is been painless. this is wake county fwiw.

I filled out the information last night online. The questions are pretty much the same as what you would answer on a 4473. Plus some additional info on past addresses etc. Paid my fees online and there was an appointment available for this afternoon (very next day). Went in for my appointment self addressed my envelope, swore to the notary that I was truthful on my answers to the questions and signed the application.

She told me my renewal should be in the mail within 90 days. She did actually inform me that I could still carry with my permit if it expired before my new one arrived but I would not be able to purchase any new handguns after the expiration date.

even if our state were to pass a constitutional carry amendment, I would probably still get a permit since I travel out of state so much

Looks like not anymore, played with the map and all the same stuff lights up.

Oregon though, what happened to you? I got my CCW when I turned 21 in Oregon, still remember one question on the test in the class. The question was:

- Name the two types of priming systems

The answer was supposed to be "centerfire and rimfire". I put "boxer and berdan", the guy grading gave it to me anyway. I was a reloading nerd even then.
