Shingles suck.

My wife is 43, she has had them twice already, same spot both times right under her left boob. I have told her to ask for the shot when she goes to the Dr. I don't care about the cost, if insurance doesn't pay. Watching her hurt like that is not fun

My long range shooting mentor is a 3 time cancer survivor and has had 3 heart attacks. He's diabetic and just had a toe amputated. He's had shingles before and just laughed when I told him about the vaccine. He said shingles were the least of his worries.

In the last year two people that I know well have gotten shingles. Both started taking CBD oil for the pain within 1 - 2 weeks of diagnosis and both experienced 100% pain relief with no discernible side effects.

Go ahead and get on the list for the vaccine. The supply cannot currently keep up with the demand. My wife and I are on the list at Walgreen's and there were about 50 people ahead of us.

I'm closing in on 50...based on the description of ice picks...I'm taking notice and making an avoidance plan.
My typical tactic is to NOT engage if possible !!

I had chicken pox as a child.
I have been immunized against most all bad stuff, including anthrax & yellow fever and I test positive for tuberculosis antibodies. I could be cultured for antivenom! ;)

@Crazy Carl

Can anyone point out a common factor of shingles victims?
Unhealthy immune system due to lifestyle perhaps? I'm asking, not stating anything.

Thanks.
Slacker,
I had them in 2011 and am still having to take Gabepentin (sic?) today. The Doc said that they are brought on by high stress levels. I didn’t think that I stressed that much. Mine started on my right side and wrapped up and around my back ending in the back of my scalp.
I thought I was tough....nope!
That was rough!

No one specific factor except having chicken pox previously. Other factors are age (usually 50 or older), weaken immune system, steroid use (Prednisone), undergoing chemo or radiation therapy, stress. Other than having chicken pox as a kid, the only other factors I had was that I was close to age 50 and Kenalog injections in the hip, elbow or shoulder over the previous years. I had received one about 3 weeks before getting shingles. I had planned on getting the vaccine in December but I still get occasional flares of discomfort where I had it. Just enough to be bothersome at times. The postherpetic neuralgia can last up to a year a longer although it typically last 1-3 months.

Got shingles 3 weeks ago. The rash is slowly fading but the postherpetic neuralgia is kicking my butt. Gabapentin, Ibuprofen, Lidocaine patches, Aspercreme with Lidocaine , apple cider vinegar with pepper mint oil soaks and cold compresses are making it manageable, but when it flares it is horrible. Can't stand for my shirt to be touching me when it flares. Today's public service announcement is if you are age 50 (I'm not there just yet) and have not had you Zoster vaccine, get it. If it decreases your chance of getting shingles then it is well worth it. On a side note, I thank God for modern medicine.. I can only imagine what folks in the past had to go through. Should the SHTF, it's going to be terrible for people who have nothing to help manage it.
Sympathies here. My mom has struggled with them for over a year now.

CBD oil is legal in 30 states where medicinal and/or recreational marijuana is legal.
I heard that stuff will make you go crazy and rape women!
;)

I once worked with a guy who's father committed suicide because of the shingles. If I remember, he kept them for months and couldn't hardly get out of bed. He told me they drove his dad crazy from the pain

We went to breakfast once and the guy at the table next to us was telling us about having shingles on his buttocks. I think he did it to make my parents uncomfortable. Guess he was sharing his misery.

My wife started taking it for other conditions and says overall she feels a lot better.

I’ve had an ongoing case of shingles for about 3 1/2 years. I’ve taken antivirals, steroids, gabapentin, etc...
So, this year, everyone in the house, got the flu. We got prescriptions for Tamiflu. The Tamiflu, cleared the shingles up completely. Unfortunately, after five weeks, the lovely shingles have returned. It was a nice five weeks without the itching and pain.

The side effects from tamiflu can’t be as bad as the side effects of Gabapentin...so go get more!

I agree. It’s odd to me that the Tamiflu worked so well because I have a prescription for 1gr Vacyclovir and it never worked.

It seems like the standard treatment is really that there is no standard, just poke and hope.

I got the 2nd shot earlier this month on a Saturday evening around 5:00.
Woke up sunday morning feeling ok but with a shore shoulder, of course.
I ended up going for short run in the morning. Man, It wiped me out and I had flu-like symptoms all day (minus the fever). I had slight chills, body aches, and the sensitive skin thing where all your hair hurts to touch it.
Woke up the next morning and I was back to normal.

So just a head's up, you may want to avoid doing anything too strenuous after getting it for a day or so. I think may have exacerbated the effects of the shot.

oh, and also... It seems like the vaccine is slowly coming back to pharmacies. My pharm said they received a limited supply but expect more soon.

I will finally be getting my initial Shingrix shot this friday. I have waited a few months for it.

@Roland! Thanks, valuable info, much appreciated! I wonder if taking preloading 2 Tylenol would help prior to vaccine?

I had them back in Apr 17 and they put me in the hospital and hooked up IV’s. I was told by my doctors that I could get them anytime back in Aug 16 when I had a bone marrow transplant. I am a second time cancer survivor and have had radiation and chemo treatments. My immune system just doesn’t work that great anymore. If someone coughs or sneeze I run the other way.

I dont know. Might be worth a shot.
If anything though, just dont panic if you feel like garbage. It should pass in a day or so.
The first shot didnt affect me other than the sore arm. Maybe your body is fighting harder against it when you get the second, who knows? But hey, if it keeps me from getting shingles, I'm all in

This seems to be true about some other things too, not just shingles...

Been on a waiting list for the vaccine for a few months.
I will be getting my first of the two Shingrix shots this Friday.

Here is the info I found on the Shingrix shot.

You can’t get the shot if you have an active case of shingles and they want you to be completely clear for thirty days. My doctor told me that if I wasn’t completely clear the vaccine would make the current outbreak worse.
Let me know how it works for you and I’ll cross my fingers and hope that mine will clear up long enough to get the vaccine.

The pediatrician always told me to give the kids Tylenol 2 hours prior to immunizations, so I’d say definitely Tylenol or Aleve.

Hey Jenny thanks!
I decided to call my local pharmacy and ask if the vaccine arrived yet and they said they had several doses of vaccine so I went and got the shot this afternoon instead of Friday morning. I took the shot in the left arm as I am a right side sleeper. The nurse that administered the vaccination said go ahead and take two Tylenol. As of now no arm pain, redness or swelling around the injection site or flu like muscle aches or any of the listed potential side effects.
I went to the Shingrix website and signed up for the second booster text notification. Pretty cool. I already gotta a text letting me know that I will be getting another text reminder for my second booster in about 2 months.

I will see how I feel this evening and in the morning. I think I was wise to get the shot, time will tell. I will post up tomorrow on how I feel. Thanks again!

they make them smaller now. 3 at a time.
works 80% of the time.

Thanks for the update. I’d lie if I said I wasn’t a little envious because I can’t get mine cleared up long enough to get the shot.

This morning the only minor side effects of the shingrix vaccine is a little ringing in my ears and the shot site a little sore, that’s it. No other side effects. I think taking 2 Tylenol was a good thing. In two months I will plan to get the booster.

Glad you're good. I only had arm pain for about 4 days with the first shot. It was the second that did a number on me.
