Practice Thread

Ended up taking an off season. Helped a buddy redo a deck for the last 4 weekends. So I took @Ben B advice on the Short Course podcast and did not shoot or practice other than the RPS match. Also took his advice on shooting a not typical division (for me) and shot a BUG match with my Shield. The match was just pure fun. But now I am itching to get after it. SC State is the end of March. Dryfire begins 12/26. Time to hit it hard.

But now I am itching to get after it

Been out back today working on coming in and leaving. Back and forth, back and forth. For 10-15 seconds at a time trying to get as many down zeros as I could in allotted time. Also started with a 10 yd sprint to 1st position. Let me know real quick how out of shape I am!
Separately, I worked on reloads, and worked on my draw and index, trying to be sure I've got a good, consistent grip. Good depending on who you ask I guess.
My grip looks a lot like Yong Lee's.
Maybe too much for one session I don't know.

Remember yall, I'm just getting my feet wet in this sport so if I seem amateurish it's because I are one. But I'm committed to getting better and these are just things I've been doing to accomplish that. Your feedback, criticism is welcome.
Yesterday it was all about working on my reloads. I'm confident that I shaved off 4 tenths reliably, sometimes was a little better. This is starting with gun extended, at slide lock, (IDPA) at the beep do the reload and back out to extension and fire a shot. Started at a blistering 2.3 seconds and got it down to 1.9 with a fairly repeatable grip.
I learned it was faster for me if I positioned mag carrier further around towards my back rather than at centerline.
Today i set up targets at 5, 10, 15 and 20 yds. On the beep drawing to an index at the different distances, trying to see what was acceptable for one shot, still paying attention to my grip. It's inconsistent.
Also worked on transitions and included a no-shoot. 10-15 seconds at a time back and forth as many times as I could to each target.20190206_162623.jpg

Sounds like good practice to me. I need to get my fat butt out and do some live fire drills and need to start dry fire back up. I don’t think I’ve practiced in 7 or 8 months. Keep it up brother!

Went to the range today.
Main goal in everything I planned to do was grip the freaking gun with my support hand.
Tried to shoot some groups first.
Also wanting to compare accuracy of Blazer to the Winchester I've been shooting.
I'm prolly not good enough off hand to do that though.
Really need to improve the accuracy.20190207_164504.jpg
Went over to steel bay and just shot from different distances, from a draw, just trying to get hits. Maybe 70% were good.
Then worked on running with the gun.
Shooting steel from about 10 yds, poppers about 10 yds apart, running that distance shooting them head on. Caught myself breaking the 180 doing a reload. Oops!
Think I learned if I just relax and don't try so hard the reloads go better. Was missing the magwell a lot.
Down to my last 10 rounds I decided to try something I've never practiced. Pulling the trigger as fast as I could, and get good hits at the same time.
No concealment.
From 10 yds, draw on the beep, 5 shots on IDPA target, 1 zero. 2 down 1's, 2 mikes.
Moved up to 7 yds this was the result.20190207_152339.jpg

Thought that was pretty good for me and my skillz. If only I could do it from some distance. But, felt like I finished on a high note and was glad I was out of ammo.
150 rounds for the day. Bout 2 hrs.
And as far as gripping the gun, for the very first time, my support hand is a little sore. Especially my thumb. I hope that's a good indication. Here's a pic of what seems to work best for me.20190202_125210.jpg

Start each of your match training sessions with The Wizard..... Cold. Do it only Once and then go ahead with your match training. It only takes 5 rounds and 2 minutes of your time.

Bill Drill is awesome drill to do and will tell you a lot!

Good work! Practice is where you want to push it, just like you did.

Something I've learned for matches: never attempt to shoot quickly, the goal is to shoot consistently and within your skill level. This eliminates/reduces mistakes, and results in a net gain over the few times that a stage turns out better because you "pushed it". If I'm at the end of a match and I know so-and-so has outshot me and I just NEED to catch him, I'll roll the dice and push the last stage. But that can't ever be done for an entire match without the wheels falling off at some point.

Keep up the good work!

The sunshine feels so good!!!
Sure has been nice to be back outdoors practicing this week.
I don't feel like I get as much accomplished practicing indoors. Nor is my head in the game as much...dont know why...
Also didn't make my live-fire session last week on account of the dern rain.:(
